1. كفُّوا حديث العذل عن مسمعي

    فأين من يعقل أو من يعي

    Cease talking of blame in my hearing

    Where is one who comprehends or one who hears?

  2. يا عاذلي في الحسن إن كنت لم

    تبصر فإني منك لم أسمع

    O you who blame me for beauty - if you

    Cannot see, I have not heard you.

  3. لا تزد القلب على شجوِه

    إن كنت لا تأرق لي فاهجع

    Do not add more sorrow to my heart

    If you do not lose sleep for me, then sleep.

  4. أنا الذي يروي حديث الأسى

    مسلسلاً في الحبِّ عن مدمعي

    I am the one who tells tales of sorrow,

    Spilling endlessly in love from my stream (eyes).

  5. واعجبي في الحبِّ أشكو الجفا

    من ساكنٍ في منحى أضلعي

    And amazingly, in love I complain of callousness

    From one residing in my ribs’ enclosure.

  6. إن شئت يا بدر الدجى إن بدا

    فاطْلع وإن شئت فلا تطلع

    If you wish, O full moon of darkness, if it appears,

    Rise up, and if you wish, do not rise.

  7. وأنتِ يا أغصانَ بانَ النقا

    إذا تثنى فاسجدي واركعي

    And you, O branches of bending bamboo,

    When you bend, prostrate and bow down.

  8. لا آخذ الله ليالي اللقا

    فإنها أصل الأسى الموجع

    I take not an oath by nights of reunion

    That they are the source of agonizing sorrow.

  9. لو نسيت عينايَ إنسانها

    ما نسيت ليلى على الأجرع

    If my eyes forgot their sleep,

    They did not forget Layla of pure traits.

  10. وغفلة الواشين عن وصلنا

    ونحنُ كالواجد في مضجع

    And the heedlessness of spies about our union

    While we were like the finder in the bed.

  11. يا مقلتي بالوصلِ قرّي ويا

    مدائحي في ابن حميد ارْتعي

    O my eyelids, in union be calm, and O

    My praises of Ibn Hameed rest (be silent)!

  12. شمسٌ ينادى ذكره سرّ ويا

    طرف الأعادي خاسئاً فارْجعي

    A sun whose mention in secret is desired, and O

    Glance of enemies, withdraw defeated!

  13. مستحكم الرأي ولكن متى

    نخدعه باغي نشبٍ يخدع

    Firm in opinion but when

    Will we outwit an unjust attacker who tricks?

  14. يزدحم اللثم على كفِّه

    تزاحم البهم على المكرع

    The facial veil crowds over his palm,

    As perplexity crowds the palm of one lost.

  15. إذا بدا أبصرْتَ حسَّاده

    من مهطع الرأس ومن مقنع

    If he appeared, you see his enviers

    From the scruff of the neck and from one masked.

  16. آراء عمرٍو ولهى حاتمٍ

    وحلو قيسٍ وذكا الأصمعي

    The views of ‘Amr, and the fancy of Hatim

    And the sweetness of Qais and the intelligence of Al-Asma’i.

  17. جننت يا غيثُ متى شئت أن

    تحكِي أيادِيه فطِرْ أوقَع

    You drive me mad, O rain, whenever you wish, to

    Relate his generous hands, so pour heavily!

  18. ذاك الذي عمَّ جدى برّه

    وأنت في الموضع والموضع

    The one whose righteousness has spread to encompass my grandfather,

    While you are in place and in place.

  19. أصبحَ لا حرز لأمواله

    فلو عدا السارق لم يقطع

    His wealth has become without guard in the morning,

    So if the robber transgressed he would not be punished.

  20. تهبّ نعماه وبأساؤه

    من سجسجٍ طوراً ومن زعزع

    His bounties gush and with his adversities

    From swirling freely and from shaking.

  21. لطافة حفَّت بها هيبةٌ

    كالسيف ذو الرّونق والمقطع

    Gentleness which awe has encompassed

    Like the sword having elegance and edge.

  22. وهمَّة علياء تعبانة

    أيّ ربى في المجدِ لم تقرع

    And lofty resolve exerted

    What Lord reared it in glory unharmed!

  23. لو أنَّها ألفت هلال السما

    مكان شسع النعل لم تقنع

    If it befriended the new crescent,

    It would not be content with worn-out sandals’ straps.

  24. وأنمل تحنو على معدمٍ

    تحنن الثدِي على المرضع

    And it shows tenderness to one destitute

    Like a breast’s tenderness towards one suckling.

  25. وليسَ يعيى جودها ذا غنىً

    جود الحيا في الجدول المترع

    Nor does his generosity weary, having wealth,

    The sea’s generosity in the overflowed stream.

  26. شم فضله واللفظ وانْظر إلى

    صوبِ الغوادِي والحمى الممرع

    Smell his superiority and speech and look

    Towards the mid-morning clouds and heated mirage.

  27. نظمٌ ونثرٌ في عقولِ الورى

    كالخمر أو كالسحر أو أصنع

    Verse and prose in the minds of people

    Like wine or like magic or stronger.

  28. لا غَرْوَ إن تسكر شمسية

    لموعةٌ تصدر عن ألمع

    No wonder if Shamsiyya wine intoxicates,

    An affliction issuing from a shining moon.

  29. ذو قلم يجني الغنى والفنا

    من شهده أو سمّه المنقع

    Possessing a pen harvesting riches and craft,

    From whose nectar they partake or named witness.

  30. ينهلّ منه القصد في منجحٍ

    ويلجأ الجيش إلى منجع

    Desire draws from it rightly

    And an army takes refuge in its sanctuary.

  31. أيّ ردينيّ بغى حربه

    من ندمٍ للسنِّ لم يقرع

    What base opponent sought his war

    Out of regret to the years that did not ring his door?

  32. يا سابق الناس لشأوِ العلى

    من حاصرٍ باقٍ ومن مرتع

    O preceder of people to the most high glory,

    From every persistent besieger and pasture.

  33. كأنما يسلك في مجهلٍ

    وأنتَ في متّضح مهيَعي

    As if he walks in confused land

    While you walk in a land brightly lit.

  34. تهنَّ بالحجِّة مقبولة

    فائزة المقصد والمرجع

    You take pride in convincing proofs,

    Victorious in purpose and reference.

  35. والحجر المدنى إليه يداً

    بأكرم الحالك والأصنع

    And the well-formed rock stretches its hand out to him

    With the most generous condition and strongest.

  36. وانعم ودُمْ واسمعْ معاني الثنا

    على قصور الخلق واسْتمتع

    And delight, stay, and listen to the meanings of praise

    Over the inadequacy of creation and enjoy yourself!

  37. جلت معاليك على واصفٍ

    حتى غدا المادح كالمقدع

    Your great feats went beyond any describer

    Until the praiser became like one inflating.

  38. وأبعدت عن حاسدٍ كائدٍ

    أينَ السهى من مقعد أقطع

    And it distanced you from an envious plotter -

    Where is happiness from the seat of a lame one?

  39. وأبعدت علياك لي في الندى

    فجبتها بالكلم المبدع

    And your sublimity became distanced, high to me in dew,

    So I obtained it through creative words.

  40. ورد نعماك إليَّ الرَّجا

    فأنتَ شمسي والرَّجا يوشعي

    And hope returned your bounties to me,

    For you are my sun, and hope makes me wealthy!
