1. بدا وقامته تختال بالتِّيه

    فأيُّ شمس على رمحٍ تحاكيه

    His stance began to sway unsteadily

    What sun on a lance can rival him?

  2. وقمتُ أذكره بالظبيِ ملتفتاً

    فقالَ لي طرفهُ من غير تشبيه

    I stood remembering him, turning to the gazelle,

    Its glance said to me without any simile,

  3. أغنّ يبعد مشتاقاً ويرشقهُ

    باللَّحظِ فهو على الحالين يرميه

    Sing absently yearning and it hits him

    With a glance, so he aims at both states,

  4. ما للذي فتنت قلبي محاسنهُ

    أضحى يعذِّب روحي وهي تفديه

    What is it with him whom my heart fell for his charms

    Now torturing my soul while it ransoms him

  5. وما لعاذل قلبي في محبَّته

    تعبان يدخل فيما ليسَ يعنيه

    What is it with my heart’s reproacher in his love

    Exhausted entering into what does not concern him

  6. ألفاظه الريح لكن في الحشا لهب

    وربَّما كانَ مرّ الريح يُذكيه

    His words are wind but in affection there is flame

    And the bitter wind perhaps ignites it

  7. والقلب قد أشكر الله الحبيب بهِ

    فما الملام على حالي بمخليه

    My heart thanked Allah for the beloved thereby

    So why blame my state with its abandoner?

  8. لا يختشي بيت قلبي غزوَ لائمه

    فإنَّ للبيتِ ربًّا سوف يحميه

    My heart’s home fears no intruding blamer’s invasion

    For the home has a Lord who will protect it

  9. يا ثاني العطف من تيهٍ ومن غضبٍ

    حتَّى كأنيَ قلت الغصن ثانيه

    O kindest sympathy of wandering and anger

    As though I said the branch a second it

  10. خفض قلاك وعلَّلني بوعدِ لقا

    وخلّ عمري يقضي في تقاضيه

    Lower your wrap and favor me with a promise of union

    And let my life spend seeking it

  11. وابعث خيالاً تراني منه في جدلٍ

    فالروح تثبته والجسم ينفيه

    Send an apparition I see myself arguing with

    The soul proves it and body denies it

  12. هيهات طال سهادي في هواك فلا

    طيف أراه ولا سقم أواريه

    Alas—my pillow is long in your love so

    No specter I see nor illness I pretend

  13. أحيي اللياليَ تِسهاداً فيا لفتىً

    يميته الليل حزناً وهوَ يحييه

    I pass the nights sleepless so O youth

    The night kills him of sorrow while he gives it life

  14. لو كانَ للَّيلِ سلطان كما زعموا

    لكانَ ينصف جفني من تشكِّيه

    If the night had power as they claimed

    It would do justice to my eyelids from its torment

  15. سقياً لوصلك والأيام عاطفة

    تردُّ دمع المعنَّى من مآقيه

    Quenching longing for you and days of grace

    Sends back the tear of meaning from its litigant

  16. وصل تكنَّف روحي بعد ما جهدت

    كمل تكنَّف دين الله محيِّيه

    Unite—envelop my soul after it tired

    Perfect—envelop religion of Allah giving it life

  17. حامي حمى الملك بالأقلام مشرعة

    على المنى والمنايا حول واديه

    Guarding precinct of kingdom with pens unfurled

    To hopes and aspirations around its valley

  18. لو ألقيت كعصا موسى على حجرٍ

    نفجَّر الماء من أقصى نواحيه

    If I cast like Moses’ staff on a rock

    Water burst from its furthest sources

  19. جاءت بيحيى معاليه مبشراً

    فصدَّقت يده بشرى معاليه

    His glories came giving good tidings

    So his hand ratified the good tidings of his glories

  20. يدٌ بأصلِ نداها فرع كلّ ندى

    كالبحر ناقلة عنهُ سواقيه

    A hand whose origin brought out every dew’s branch

    Like the sea conveying its channels

  21. سارت وراءَ خباها السحب وادعة

    لا تأخذ الماء إلا من مجاريه

    Traveling behind its hidden clouds calling

    Taking no water but from its courses

  22. يا محسن الظنّ هذا نحو أنعمه

    بمفرد الفضل قد نادى مناديه

    O good opinion's patron this composition

    With singular grace called out its caller

  23. يمَّم مغانيَهُ بالقصدِ محتكماً

    إنَّ الغنى اشْتقَّ فينا من مغانيه

    He threaded his odes with intention referring

    That wealth derived from us its richness

  24. ذاك الذي يستمدُّ النيل أنعمه

    فما الأصابع إلا من أياديه

    He who draws grace’s Nile his boons

    So fingers but from his hands

  25. حوت كنانة سهماً من براعته

    لا تعرف اليمن إلا حينَ تحويه

    Kinanah’s arrow held an edge of his skill

    Yemen knows no other when containing it

  26. بكفٍّ زاكي السجايا إن برى قلماً

    يكاد ينطقُ تمجيداً لباريه

    With a palm purely marked if he drew a pen

    It nearly speaks praising its Maker

  27. ذو السؤدد المحض لا طود يجاذبه

    ثوب الوقار ولا نجم يساميه

    Of easy disposition no mantle contends him

    Nor a star rivals him

  28. ماضي شبا العزم كم حالٍ به علقت

    تعلُّق الحال من فعلٍ بماضيه

    My youthful determination passed—how many states dependent

    A state’s dependence on an act with its past

  29. في بيت فضلٍ على الجوزاء مرتفع

    تعنو القصائد عن أدنى مبانيه

    In a house of grace raised above Gemini

    Odes announce below its foundations

  30. لم ندرِ ما فيه من وصفٍ فنحصره

    وصاحب البيت أدرَى بالذي فيه

    We did not know what description to limit it with

    And the house’s owner knows best what’s in it

  31. بيت ليحيى من الفاروق متَّصل

    بخٍ لماضيه من بيتٍ وباقيه

    A house of Yahya connected to the Farouq's

    Bygone radiance from a house and its remainder

  32. قلْ للذي نهضت للمجدِ همَّتهُ

    ضاهى السماك ويحيى لا يضاهيه

    Say to him whose ambition rose to glory

    Rivaling highest heaven while Yahya cannot rival him

  33. إنَّ السيادة قد نضَّت سوالفها

    لواحد العصر يصبيها وتصبيه

    That mastery has unfurled its dynasties

    To the singular one of time it pours itself and pours him

  34. مقسم الدين والدنيا على شيمٍ

    قد أتْعبت في المعالي من يجاريه

    Divider of religion and world with moral

    Exhausting the glories whoever contends him

  35. أيامهُ للعلى والمجد قائمة

    وللعفاف وللتقوى لياليه

    His days upholding glory and might

    His nights upholding chastity and piety

  36. ما زالَ يعمل آراء وأدعية

    حتَّى اسْتوى الملك في أعلى صياصيه

    He never ceased devising opinions and litanies

    Until the kingdom settled in its highest seat

  37. واسْتوثق العدل في الدنيا فليسَ بها

    جانٍ سوى راتع في الروضِ يجنيه

    And justice held firmly in the world, so none remains

    But a delightful one in the garden enjoying it

  38. يا من له الفضل باديه وحاضرهُ

    ومن لهُ القصد دانيه وقاصيه

    O you whose outstanding grace is evident and hidden

    And you whose intention is near and far

  39. دين الرجا قد تناهت لي مطالبهُ

    على الزمانِ ولكن أنتَ قاضيه

    The debt of hope exhausted its demands from fate

    But you are its arbitrator

  40. أدعوك دعوة شاكي الحال معتقد

    أن ليسَ غيركَ بعد الله يشكيه

    I call upon you the call of one aggrieved in state

    Believing none save Allah then you adjures it

  41. إن لم تراع برأيٍ منك مقصده

    يا ابن السراة فقل لي من تراعيه

    If you don’t respect its purpose with a view from you

    My wishful relief and solace

  42. في نظرةٍ منك تأميلي ومفترجي

    ولفظة منك تنويلي وتنويهي

    A word from you interpreting me and appeasing me

    I say and tears have marched their riding beasts

  43. أقول والدمع قد سارتْ ركائبهُ

    إلى حماكَ وقد طافتْ أمانيه

    To your sanctuary and wishes toured it

    This vocabulary growth complains of thirst

  44. هذا نباتيُّ لفظٍ يشتكي عطشاً

    لعلَّ أفقك بالأنواء يسقيه

    Hoping your horizon with springs waters it

    Yes—and this shaky dictation so may

  45. نعم وهذا مقالٌ داثرٌ فعسى

    يا من له قلم الإنشاء تنشيه

    The owner of scripture's pen revive it
