1. بكى الشعر أيام المنى والمنائح

    ففي كل بيت للثنا صوت نائح

    The poetry wept during the days of Mina and the dirges

    In every house there was a voice wailing in grief

  2. وغاضت بحور المكرمات وطوحت

    بأهل الرجا والقصد أيدي الطوائح

    The seas of virtues swelled and surged

    And the hands of misfortunes assaulted the people of hope and good intentions

  3. ولما ادلهمَّت صفحة الأفق بالأسى

    علمنا بأنَّ الشهب تحت الصفائح

    And when the horizon was shrouded in sorrow

    We knew that the shooting stars were under the horizons

  4. حيا المزن أسعدني على فقد سادة

    بدمع كجدواهم على الناس طافح

    May Muzain bring me joy for the loss of masters

    With tears flowing like theirs for people

  5. أبعد بني شادٍ وقد سكنوا الثرى

    قريض لشادٍ أو سرور لفارح

    After the Bani Shad who now reside in the earth

    Is there condolence for Shad or joy for one who rejoices?

  6. أبعد ملوك العلم والبأس والندى

    تشب العلى نار القرى والقرائح

    After the kings of knowledge, valor and brilliance

    The fires of tombs and pyres are ignited

  7. أما والذي أخلى حمى الملك منهمُ

    وعمّر بالعليا رسوم الضرائح

    By the One who emptied the sanctuary of their kingdom

    And eternalized the statutes of tombs

  8. لئن أوحشوا منهم بيوت مقامهم

    لقد أوحشت منهم بيوت المدائح

    If they made their homes desolate by their absence

    They made the homes of praises even more desolate

  9. يجرّح قلبي بعدهم صوت ساجعٍ

    يذكرني عهدَ الأيادي السوافح

    The voice of a mourning poet wounds my heart

    Reminding me of the time of outpouring hands

  10. فيا فرخ ضعفي حيث صرت فريسة

    وصار حمامُ الأيك في الطير جارحي

    So my weak self became easy prey

    And the doves of the valleys became my predators

  11. تلا فقد إسماعيل فقد محمد

    فيا للأسى من فادح بعد فادح

    The loss of Ismael preceded the loss of Mohammed

    Oh what great agonies from one catastrophe to another!

  12. وزالا فما إنسان عيني بممسكٍ

    بكاءَ ولا إنسان قولٍ بكادح

    They are gone and no human consoles me with a grasp

    No human eases my pain with words

  13. كأن زناد الفضل لم يورِ منهما

    سنا شيمٍ ما فيه قولٌ لقادح

    As if the flints of virtue did not shine from them

    No words of integrity or chiding

  14. كأن لم يقم بالمكرمات مطوَّق

    لدى الباب يشدوا بالثنا شدو صادح

    As if the endowed were not gathered

    Singing loudly at the gates

  15. خذ الزاد يا ضيف المكارم وارتحلْ

    بنوح فقد أقوت ربوع المنائح

    Take provisions, oh guest of generosity, and journey on

    In grief, for the meadows of consolation have become desolate

  16. نزحت دموعاً أو نزحت ركائباً

    فلله في الحالين حسرة نازح

    I shed tears or perhaps I marched on

    In both cases, it is agonizing sorrow

  17. بروحي ديار الفضل صوَّح روضها

    كأن لم يجب فيها المنى صوت صائح

    By my soul, the abode of virtue - its garden is desolate

    As if no wishes were answered within it or voices wailing

  18. بروحي غريب الدار والنعشُ عائدٌ

    إلى أرضه الثكلى غريب النوائح

    By my soul, a stranger in the land and the procession returns

    To its bereaved homeland, strangers in their crying

  19. بروحي نظير الغصن في دوحة العلى

    رماه فأوداه الزمان ببارح

    By my soul, like a branch in the lofty palm tree

    Cast off by time without notice

  20. رمى فروعه من بعد ما مدَّ ظله

    على كل غادٍ م العفاة ورائح

    Its branches spread shade

    Onto every gentle and pure soul

  21. وجمَّل دنيانا ببثّ جميلةٍ

    وغطى على مكروهها والقبائح

    It beautified our world by emanating grace

    And covered over its ugliness and disgraces

  22. وساس رعايا أرضه وأطاعه

    على جانب العاصي هوى كل جامح

    And ruled over its subjects who obeyed him

    While the defiant were tempted by its sway

  23. وأعطى عطاء السحب في حال عسرة

    تقوم بأعذار النفوس الشحائح

    It gave generously in times of hardship

    Fulfilling the hopes of optimistic souls

  24. وزاوج بين الحلم والبأس ملكه

    فمن أعزل مثل السماك ورامح

    His kingdom married wisdom and valor

    So who can isolate the elite and the courageous?

  25. ورتل من أسلافه سوَرَ العلى

    خواتمها موصولة بالفواتح

    It recited the brilliant chapters of its ancestry

    With interlocking introductions and conclusions

  26. وقام إلى جمع المحامد طامحاً

    فوالله لم يعدل به عزم طامح

    Aspiring to gather all praise

    None can equate to its mighty determination

  27. ووالله ما نقضي حقوق محمد

    إذا نحن أثنينا عليه بصالح

    By Allah, we cannot fulfill the rights of Mohammed

    Even by singing his praises

  28. ولو أمكن الغيث الفدى بوليّه

    فدى صالحاً من آل شادٍ بطالح

    If the plentiful rain could sacrifice its patron

    It would ransom Salah of the Bani Shad

  29. ورد الرّدى عن فائض البرّ عنده

    أعزّ مكان في الدنى سرح سائح

    It dispelled harm from the abundance of righteousness

    The most honorable position in the world - meadow for strolling

  30. هو الموت لو يثنيه بأسٌ ونائل

    ثنتهُ سجايا كفه في الجوانح

    It is death, even if a mighty warrior confronts it

    His claws can tear through ribs

  31. هو الموت ما يعييهِ ثاوٍ بمغفل

    ولا واصل في النبذ من خطو سابح

    It is death, no deserter can escape it

    Nor one who journeys smoothly through the waves

  32. ولا أسدٌ يرنو بأحمر أجزرٍ

    تكاد به تشوى لحوم الذبائح

    Nor the lion with bloody paws

    With which it can burn the flesh of offerings

  33. ولا أسد الأبراج في الشهب كاسراً

    بتكرارها سرت نفوس الصحائح

    Nor the zodiac lion breaking the shooting stars

    With its repeated strikes troubling souls

  34. كفى ببني أيوب للناس واعظاً

    وإن صمتت أفواههم في الضرائح

    The Bani Ayyub sufficed people with lessons

    Even if their mouths were silenced in the graves

  35. ومرقى المنايا نحو آفاق عرشهم

    وما كان يرقى نحوها طرف طامح

    The ascent to their demise is towards the horizon of their throne

    While no ambitious sight could aspire so high

  36. سلام على جنات أجداثهم ولا

    سلام لنار الحزن بين الجوانح

    Peace be upon their youthful graves but no

    Peace for the fire of grief in our hearts
