يقولون تبكي والديار قريبة
إذا بعدت أوطانهم كيف تصنع
They say, “You weep while the dwellings are near—
if their homelands grow distant, what will you do?”
دعوا مقلتي العبرى تجود بمائها
عسى أن حزن من الجفن يوضع
Let my tearful eye pour forth its water;
perhaps some sorrow may thereby be lifted from the eyelid.
وثقت بتنكيد الفراق فأسبلت
جفوني وعجلت الذي أتوقع
Certain of separation’s torment, I set
my eyelids flowing, and hastened what I expect.
وما هي إلا مهجة ذاب شطرها
فسالت بها من فوق خدي أدمع
It is nothing but a heart, half of which has melted;
and with it tears streamed down over my cheek.
وعما قليل ينفذ البين سهمه
فلا مهجة تبقى ولا دمع يهمع
Before long, separation will drive its arrow home;
then neither heart will remain, nor tears pour.
