The pupil of my eye—its little man—is worn away by sleepless torment.
By my life, man was indeed created of haste.
Though I conceal love, its signs will not remain concealed;
and if I incline toward patience’s road, I cannot persist.
I yearn for one guarded by reproachers—whenever she looks,
her glance outstrips sword-blades in rebuke.
Supple in her turning and naturally kohl-dark of eye—even if she applied kohl,
the kohl-stick could not lift her languid lids.
I have lost my patience, yet shall never attain the taste of her saliva;
thus I have gained neither bitter sap nor honey.
In despite of all other beauties, she attained more than words describe:
beauty through ornaments, while they attained only some through wiles.
How often the lids of her eyes have spun
a garment of sickness for the body of the valiant hero.
Gazelle-eyed one among Egypt’s gazelles—you indeed
have filled the world with your coquetry—and with ghazal.
May rain refresh the days of youth, when I would outstrip her
at times, while she outstripped me in dalliance and dispute.
I would catch her stumbling in the snares of my verse—
how lovely the gazelle caught in a cunning hunter’s nets!
When she grew distant, I exchanged laments with the doves of the bān trees:
theirs was wailing, and mine a flood of streaming tears.
My body recovered through the malady of youthful passion;
perhaps bodies are sometimes restored to health by maladies.
Neither did patience help my heart toward consolation,
nor did sound judgment preserve me from folly,
until gray hair shone at my temples and guided me
toward right guidance, with flames amid the darkness of my locks.
From this day onward, love-longing is no longer among my aims,
nor is weaving ghazal into panegyrics any occupation of mine.
O you before whom pens bow in praise,
as though, a tribe of the page, they stood ranged face-to-face:
you are the one for whom the king of the gardens made arise
the claim of his written compact in the august assembly.
O you whose bounty favor-seekers saw spread wide,
so they turned their camels toward you, folding sand upon sand—
may you enjoy a feast in an auspicious season, when
all humankind, barefoot and shod, became ransom for your sandals.
May the best of realms, in the finest of seasons—O
best of sultans—bring you fortune’s choicest turns.
Your enemies are grazing beasts among the herds;
so pray and sacrifice; endure, glory, bestow, and join bond to bond.
And regard the praises of a servant who excelled through what
your hands bestowed—like a cloud pouring abundant rain.
Among the makers of verse, I possess a garden whose fragrance delights—
its tender basil, or its blossoms drenched with dew.
Falcons—the rapacious aggressors among birds—guard its precinct,
so gray doves and partridges fly away from it.
You are rain to distant and near alike;
may God preserve you, whether encamped or journeying.
Never cease to be, for humankind, a mender of the broken,
provision for the needy, and a king to those who obey.
The springtime of your justice spreads throughout the lands,
so every day is the sun’s entry into Aries.
