Bring back to us the sweetest evening talk, that we may renew it—

Dār al-Naḥḥās, the riverbank gathering place, and the club.

You see its ships journeying like camels,

with lizard and fish, sailor and camel-driver.

And life’s garden in the heights, too proud

ever to link lowland-bound descent with highland-bound ascent.

Three things make the world turn kindly toward me:

the homelands of my delight, my loved ones, and my feast-days.

May the Feast delight you—O feast yourself, O mainstay

for all creation; in praise, they have transmitted my chain of authorities.

making a delegation’s mouth break its fast—or enemies’ livers break apart.

O how far apart are mouths and livers!

Yes—our master’s bounty appeared, and there confronted it

praise at its utmost effort; but precedence belonged to the one who began.
