كان لي عبدُ يسمَّى فرجا
نصب الغير عليه الشَّبكا
Once I had a slave called Faraj.
Fortune’s turns laid their snares for him.
وأنا اليوم كما تبصرني
ليس عندِي فرجٌ إلاَّ البكا
And today, just as you see me,
I have no Faraj—no relief—except in weeping.
