هل لكَ يا أرفع البرايا

في قريةٍ شأنها رفيع

O most exalted of highlands

In a village of great renown

قد أحوجت عبدك الليالي

لسفرة أمرها فظيع

Your servant's nights implore

A dreadful journey ahead

لم يستطع مكترى حمار

فكيف للملك يستطيع

A donkey cannot afford

How can a king endure?

هذا وفي حظِّه نزول

نعم وفي رجله طلوع

This as fortune declines

Yes, as hardship arises

ليس له طاقة ليجري

إلاَّ إذا فاضت الدموع

He lacks strength to walk

Unless tears start to pour

فاجْعل له في الأنام شأد

بفرس سوقها بديع

Make him of repute among men

With a steed swiftly bought

إذا تسمى الجواد بحراً

فبحرها في الفلا سريع

If a horse be called a sea

Then its sea is quick and caught

ودمْ مدى الدهر في أمان

يفديكَ أبناؤه الجميع

May time keep him safe

Your children his ransom all wrought

فحبذا رفدك المعنى

وحبَّذا وقتنا المريع

So excellent your gracious gift

And excellent our weary plight

شهر وفضل وجود كف

ثلاثة كلها ربيع

A month, grace and palm’s bounty

Three, each a spring in its own right
