1. سرت قمراً من مسبل الشعر في جنح

    بسفح النقا آهاً على زمن السفح

    She walked like a moon, her hair cascading down her sides

    In the slopes of Nuqa, alas for the time of slopes

  2. محجبة لا طعن فيها لعائب

    على أنها تمشي فتهتز كالرمح

    Veiled, with no flaw for blame from critics

    Though she sways as she walks, like a spear

  3. سقى الله ليلاً صالحت فيه باللقا

    فما كان أشهى من لقاءٍ ومن صلح

    May God water a night of goodness, in which we met

    Nothing was sweeter than that meeting, that reconciliation

  4. أسدّ بطول اللثم فاها مخافةً

    على ليلتي أن يهجم الثغر بالصبح

    I bid farewell, drawing out the kiss, oh fear

    For my night, lest dawn's lips attack at daybreak

  5. ويخطر في وشي الحرير قوامها

    ونجم الدجى بالغيظ يعثر في منح

    And disturb the silk dress around her waist

    While the star of night angrily stumbles in its course

  6. زمان مضى حلو المراشف والجنى

    وعيش تقضى آمن السرب والسرح

    A time has passed, sweet intimacy and harvest

    And a life of secure flocks and wandering

  7. ولا عيب في تلك الليالي التي خلت

    سوى أنها مرت على الطرف كاللمح

    No fault in those bygone nights

    Except that they passed fleetingly

  8. تولى زمان الوصل وانقرض الصبى

    فيا عجباً للدهر قرحاً على قرح

    The days of union passed and the lover perished

    How strange is fate's wound upon wound

  9. سلام على العيش الوريّ زناده

    على أنه العيش البرئ من القدح

    Greetings to the innocent life, its provisions

    Though there is hardship in it, or toil

  10. وغانية مثلَ الحياةِ أحبها

    وإن كان في كدِّ بها العمر أو كدح

    And a song, like life I love it

    Though there is wear in it, and struggle

  11. ومما عناني عاذلٌ متنصحٌ

    وما الغش إلا ما سمعت من النصح

    And what distracted me, a blamer advising

    Yet deceit is only what I heard of advice

  12. يطوف بسمعي لفظه وهو بارد

    وفي القلب ما فيه من الوقد واللفح

    His words ring in my ear, yet are cold

    While in my heart is burning and ardour

  13. وفي الخفرات اللاّءِ تغني بلفظها

    عن العقد والفرع الأثيث عن الرشح

    The soft-voiced singers sing, forgetting

    Necklaces and boughs, ignoring irrigation

  14. غزال رعت في الحب أخضر عيشتي

    لقد أعرض الظبي الأغن عن الطلح

    A gazelle grazed in the meadow of love, my verdant life

    The noble deer spurns thyme

  15. وقد كان لي والدهر فيه وقائع

    فلما اجتمعنا آذن الدهر بالصلح

    Between fate and me there were events

    When we met, fate proclaimed reconciliation

  16. تعشقتها والخد يشبه خدها

    أأعشقها والشيب ملتمع اللمح

    I loved her, whose cheek resembles hers

    Can I love her, when grey hair gathers?

  17. كأن جفوني إذ تكاثر دمعها

    بنان ابن فضل الله متصل المنح

    As if my eyelids, when her tears multiplied

    Were clouds of Ibn Fadl Allah, continuous

  18. وقائلة ما بال عزمك صابراً

    على الفدحِ في الدنيا على أثر الفدح

    And she said, why is your resolve patient

    In seeking faults in life, fault upon fault?

  19. فقلت رأيت السمر أقومَ ما ترى

    إذا صبرت عند النفاق من اللقح

    I said, I saw patience as the best you can see

    When bearing hypocrisy, not fault-finding

  20. فقالت دع التقليل عنك وقم إلى

    نوافجٍ فضل الله في زمن الفرح

    She said, leave self-reproach and go to

    Virtues God granted in times of joy

  21. وبادر لمحيي الدين تلق شمائلاً

    مدربةً لم تدرِ ما هيئة الشحّ

    And hasten to the Reviver of Religion, meet traits

    Well-trained, who never knew stinginess

  22. فقمت ولكن بعد أن وضح الدجى

    وعدت بمشهور الثنا طاهر سمح

    So I rose, but after dusk had cleared

    And returned praised, of pure and generous lineage

  23. يوري زناد الفضل بالمجد والعلى

    ولكنه الفعل البريءُ من القدح

    He shows Ibn Fadl glory and elevation

    Yet his deed is innocent of any fault

  24. رئيسٌ رأى آمالنا وهي تشتكي

    من الدهر أسقاماً فقال لها صحي

    A leader who saw our hopes complaining

    Of fate's illnesses, and said to them "Be healthy!"

  25. يسابق آمال العفاة بضعف ما

    تمنت ويمسي في النوال كما يضحي

    He races to meet the hopes of the weak, with less

    Than they wished, and gives at dusk as at dawn

  26. مغيث الرجا والخوف والذل والخطا

    ببذل الندى بالأَمن بالجاه بالصفح

    Succour for hope, fear, humiliation and sin,

    With generosity, security, position and pardon

  27. إذا وصف المداح بعض صفاته

    فماذا بأكباد الأعادي من الشرح

    If the praiser describes some of his traits

    What can enemy livers do but rip?

  28. وإن فتح الراوي معاني فخاره

    فدع ما رواه آل خاقان للفتح

    And if the relater opens his prideful meanings

    Leave what the house of Khagan related about conquest

  29. ولما علا نحو السماء ثناؤه

    أتى بالنجوم الزهر والسحب السح

    And when his praise rose to the heavens

    It brought stars, flowers and clouds

  30. سحائب آلاءٍ تجول على الرجا

    وأنجم آراءٍ تدل على النجح

    Clouds of blessings circulating hope

    And stars of wisdom indicating success

  31. وسعد أفاد الملك أخبية الهنا

    وأنحى على أهل المكايد بالذبح

    Saad brought good fortune to the kingdom, secrets of bliss

    And destroyed the scheming people by slaughter

  32. كذلك فَليحكِ النظير نظيره

    بغرّ المعالي والمراشد والمنح

    So let the peer thus describe his peer

    With the mane of glory, guidance and gift

  33. فيا أيها الساعي لشقة شأوه

    تنح قصياً لست من ذلك الطرح

    O you who seek distinction through him

    Withdraw, you are not of that class

  34. ويا أيها البسام بشرا وفضله

    يعين على أعوامها الشهب الكلح

    O you who smile through his bounty

    His help makes the shooting stars easy to pluck

  35. فدياً لك من لو أن ميعاد جوده

    كفرعون لم يحتج لهامان في الصرح

    Your ransom from one whose appointed time of generosity

    Would make Haman unnecessary in the palace

  36. وأنت الذي أغنيت بالرفد يمنهم

    وبالغت حتى خلت أنك في مزح

    You who enriched them with gifts

    And went so far it was as if in jest

  37. تحليت في كتم الذي أتت واهب

    وهيهات ما للمسك بُدّ من النفح

    You wore secrecy like the giver's cloak

    And never does musk fail to impart fragrance

  38. وكم جربت منكَ الملوكُ ميامناً

    ونصحاً على فقد الميامن والنصح

    How often the kings tested your good fortune

    And advice when good fortune and advice were lost

  39. وغصن يراع يستظل به الورى

    ويشهد قتل المارقين بلا جرح

    A branch providing shade the world seeks

    Witnessing the killing of rebels without wounds

  40. وأنك يا يحيى لَتُحيي ذوي الرجا

    وتحمي من اللأوا وتنجي من الفدح

    For you, O Yahya, give life to those hopeful

    And protect from fear, delivering from loss

  41. وأنك يا يحيى لفائض جعفر

    من الوفر تزداد امتلاء على النزح

    For you, O Yahya, are Ja'far's abundance

    Ever replenished, though poured forth

  42. فلا زال للراجي جنابك موثلا

    وضدك للِهمّ المقيم وللبرح

    So your side remains inclined

    Toward the hopeful, while you oppose constant sorrows and distress

  43. تسامى على المداح قدرك رتبة

    فإقصارهمْ عن مدحه غاية المدح

    You surpass the panegyrists in your worth, rank

    So their falling short of praising you is the utmost praise

  44. وكدت لعرفان المكارم لم ترم

    بحمد وما حمد السحاب على السفح

    I almost ceased to praise, knowing your generosity,

    As clouds are not praised for rain on the plains
