1. ما لمنْ لامَ فيكمو من جواب

    غير دمع جفانهُ كالجوابي

    What can I say to those who blame me - nothing

    Except tears whose flow is my only answer

  2. يا نزولا على عقاب المصلي

    ما سمعنا بجنة في عقاب

    O you who descend upon the worshipper's pain

    We never heard of Paradise in torment

  3. أعجز الورق أن تعارَ دُموعي

    فاستعارت على الغصون انتحابي

    My words were too weak to express my tears

    So they borrowed the branches' lamentation

  4. أيها المستعيرُ دمعيَ مهلا

    إن دمعي كما علمتَ سكابي

    O you who borrowed my tears, wait

    As you know my tears are pouring

  5. حبذا منزلي على السفحِ قدْماً

    وزماني وجيرتي وشبابي

    How good was my home on the hillside

    And my time, neighbor, and youth

  6. حيث لا واشياً سوى عبق الرّو

    ضِ ولا ساعياً سوَى الأكواب

    Where there were no spies but the meadow’s scent

    And no cupbearer but the cups

  7. ذاك ربعٌ عفا على عَنت الده

    رِ وعيش مضى مع الأحباب

    That was a quarter that forgave the torment of time

    And life passed with loved ones

  8. إن توارت شمس الضحى فلعمري

    ما توارت شمس العلا بالحجاب

    When the sun of morning disappears, by my life

    The sun of glory has not disappeared behind the veil

  9. أطلعَ اللهُ للفضائل شمساً

    عوّض الناس عن ذهاب الشهاب

    God made the virtues' sun rise

    Compensating people for the loss of meteors

  10. قالَ ديوانهُ مقالة صدق

    إنّ وَكرَ العقاب لابن العقاب

    His poetry said truthfully

    The eagle's nest belongs to the eagle's son

  11. أيّ فرع نما فمدّ ظلاله

    سابغاً ذيلها على الطلاّب

    What branch grew and spread its shade

    Covering its length over students

  12. وافر المكرماتِ منشرحُ اللف

    ظِ طويلُ الثنا مديدُ الثواب

    Bountiful in generosity, cheerful in manner

    Long in praise, rewarding in judgment

  13. يلتقي المادحين بالخير في مذ

    هبة والعفاة بالإكتساب

    Bringing together the virtuous in gift

    And the chaste through endeavor

  14. رافعاً بالتواضع الحجب عنه

    وهوَ من نورِ غرّة في حجاب

    Raising the veils of modesty

    While he is the light of a rising moon behind a veil

  15. حملت كفهُ اليراع فقلنا

    حبذا البرقُ لامعاً في السحاب

    His palm carried lightning so we said

    How good is lightning flashing in the clouds

  16. يا لهُ من يراعِ فضلٍ وفيض

    سالك دهره طريقَ الصوَاب

    What overflowing merit and abundance

    Walking the path of righteousness all his life

  17. وفّرَ السمرَ عن خصام الأعادي

    وكفى المرهفات طولَ الضرَاب

    He relieved the nighttalk from enemies' quarrel

    And stopped sharp tongues' prolonged assault

  18. فهوَ كالصلّ في الدِّماغِ ولكن

    كم شفانا من رشفهِ من رضاب

    He is like endurance in the mind but

    How much healing we gained from his touch's droplets

  19. تارة يسفح الدماءَ على التر

    ب وأخرى يدير صفوَ الشراب

    Sometimes he spills blood on the ground

    Other times he turns the cups' top vintage

  20. كالعصا في يدِ الكليم وفيها

    لحمى الملك غاية الآراب

    Like Moses' stick in his hand, in it

    For the King's fever the finest cures

  21. شملتنا جدواه والوقت جدب

    فاستلانت ومعطف الدّهر آبي

    His generosity embraced us though time was barren

    So the robe of fate yielded

  22. ما سرى في الكتاب إلا وأضحى

    شغب الدّهرِ آمناً بالكتاب

    Nothing advanced in scripture

    Except the discord of fate was secured by scripture

  23. يا رئيساً به لقد أُدّب الده

    ر الذي قد جنى على الآداب

    O Chief, by it fate was disciplined

    When it transgressed all proper behavior

  24. كيف يقضي شكري حقوق أياد

    يك وأدنى نوالها قد طغا بي

    How can I fulfill my debt for your gifts

    When the least of them has overwhelmed me

  25. كيف أحصي حسابها وهيَ تبدي

    كل وقتٍ ما لم يكن في الحساب

    How can I count their sum when each moment

    Shows what was not in the count before

  26. لا عدَت بابكَ السعودُ فقد أض

    حى لوفدِ الأشعار أنجح باب

    Your door of good fortune never closed

    It shone for the caravan of poems as the finest door

  27. سببت نظمنا لُهاهُ ولا بدَّ

    لنظم القريض من أسباب

    Our compositions caused them commotion, and poems

    Must have a reason to be composed
