1. مسلسلٌ من حديث الدمع مذروف

    ينبيك أنَّ حديث الصبر مصروف

    A prolonged tale of tears that flows

    Warns you that the talk of patience has run its course

  2. وإنَّ كلّ مقال العذل مخرَفةٌ

    وكلّ ما نقل الواشون تحريف

    And that all the words of reproach are nonsense

    And all that the slanderers convey is distortion

  3. ليتَ الوشاةَ على خيطٍ فكلهمُ

    يداه مشلولةٌ واللحظ مكفوف

    If only all the slanderers were on a thread, their

    Hands paralyzed and their glances blinded

  4. آهاً لقدّك غصناً كلّه ثمرٌ

    لو أنه ببنان اللّثم مقطوف

    Alas for your cheek, a branch full of fruit

    If only it was plucked by the lips’ kiss

  5. وتبر خدّك ديناراً له لمعٌ

    لو أنه لعيان الطرف مصروف

    And your shining cheek is a gold coin whose gleam

    Would be diverted by the eyes’ glance

  6. أفدي التي تشتكي مني هوىً ولها

    بالرّدف والخصر تثقيلٌ وتخفيف

    I sacrifice her who complains I love her, while

    She has heaviness and lightness in her buttocks and waist

  7. تدعو على الكثب والأغصان لاعبة

    فالكثبُ مهتوفة والغصن مقصوف

    She blames the armpits and branches while playing

    Yet the armpits are plucked and the branches pruned

  8. لي في القصائد تشبيبٌ بها ولها

    على جريح الحشا باللحظ تذفيف

    My poems contain youthfulness about her while she

    Alleviates the wound of passion with a glance

  9. قالوا حكى القمر التميّ طلعتها

    قلنا صدقتم ولكن فيه تكليف

    They said the crescent moon told of her rising

    We said you speak true but there is some ambiguity

  10. كما حكى نيلُ مصر جودَ سائدها

    لو لم يكن في وفاء النيل تسويف

    As the Nile of Egypt told of the generosity of its flood

    Unless the Nile’s faithfulness was prone to delay

  11. ندبٌ عطفت أماديحي على نسقٍ

    من فضلِه حبَّذا للفضل معطوف

    I composed lamentations for him in a style

    Commended for merit, appended to merit

  12. مدبر الملك بالأقلام يقدمها

    في الجودِ والبأسِ تحويلٌ وتخويف

    The king’s counselor presents his pens

    For generosity and valor, alternating and warning

  13. بادي السعادة لو بثَّت مناقبه

    في الأفق لم يبدُ في الأقمارِ مخسوف

    The evident good fortune, if his virtues were diffused

    In the horizon, no eclipsed moon would appear

  14. طلق السرة يعطي حيث وجه ذكا

    كأنه بغبارِ المحل مكسوف

    Serene of face, he gives wherever a bright face turns

    As if veiled by the dust of the place

  15. يا من يعنفه في صنع مكرمةٍ

    هيهات أن يروع العشَّاق تعنيف

    O you who rebukes him for doing a kindness!

    Never! The lovers are not deterred by censure

  16. في كفِّه قلمٌ الإنشاد منشأه

    فضلٌ وفصلٌ وتعريفٌ ومعروف

    In his hand is a pen whose praises stem

    From grace, eminence, discernment and repute

  17. فتوح ملكٍ من الأسجاع خصَّ به

    هذا وذاك وسجع الناس توقيف

    The conquests of a king, prose distinguishes him

    This and that, and the prose of people is cessation

  18. وفضل نظمٍ له من بيته شرفٌ

    فهو الرضيّ وباقي النظم مشروف

    The superiority of a verse gives him honor

    He is the pleased one, while the rest of verse is truncated

  19. خطَّافةٌ لبّ رائيه براعته

    ووجهُ حاسدها بالرَّوع مخطوف

    A foxy woman captivates the viewer with her skill

    While the face of her envier is blinded by terror

  20. وصاحب السرّ قد سرَّ الزمان به

    صدر النديّ وللآلاء توطيف

    The companion of secrets has brought joy to the times through him

    The breast of the confidante and the gifts are doubled

  21. كم قاصدٍ جاء في جهرٍ وآخر في

    سرٍّ وللكلّ إنعامٌ وتشريف

    How many came openly and how many in secret

    And for all, favors and honor

  22. وكم تلطفُ كتبٍ في رسائله

    وطيَّها لمزاج الخطب تلطيف

    How gently the letters in his epistles

    Are folded for the temper of addresses, softened

  23. تسيل في الطرس أرواحُ العداة به

    حتى كأن يراع الطرس مرعوف

    The souls of enemies flow in battle through him

    As if the battle were sown with panic

  24. فالبرّ والبحر ذا بالأمن منبسطٌ

    وذاك من خجلٍ بالجودِ مرجوف

    Both land and sea are safe through security

    One is humbled by generosity and the other turbulent

  25. وكلّ عافٍ بحرف الخطّ متّصلٌ

    وكلّ عادٍ بحرف السيف محذوف

    Each ally is connected by the stroke of the pen

    And each enemy severed by the stroke of the sword

  26. شكراً لعطفٍ وأعراضٍ لديك هما

    لعبد أبوابكم برٌّ وتثقيف

    Thanks for kindness and indifference you possess

    For your servant - righteousness and education

  27. أعرضت عنه فوالت حربه فئةٌ

    شاكوا السلاح فتضريبٌ وتسييف

    Some turned from me and waged war

    Complaining of arms, then assault and defiance

  28. وما شكوتُ وما الشكوى إلى بشرٍ

    من خلق مثلي والأقدار تصريف

    I never complained, nor complained to mortals

    Of my kind, with fate decreeing

  29. حتى إذا غبطتك المكرمات عفت

    تلك الهنات وكرّوا بعد ما عيفوا

    Until favors made you refrain

    From those deliriums, and they denounced after raging

  30. إن ساءَ قوماً مقامي منشداً مدحاً

    لساءهم ليَ تشريفٌ وتسريف

    If my stance displeased a people I praised

    Their displeasure was honor and elevation for me

  31. كم خلعةٍ قلت للاحي وقد حضرت

    وعضّ لحيته للغيظ ذي صوف

    How many robes I described to the threadbare

    As I attended while he bit his wooly beard in rage

  32. وحبَّذا وبرٌ قد غصَّت فيه غنىً

    وكان لي وبرٌ بالفقرِ منتوف

    And goodness that wealth was immersed in

    While I had goodness immersed in poverty

  33. وغلَّة طاف أولادي فقلت لهم

    اسعوا لها يا عفاة البيت أو طوفوا

    The yield wandered; I said to my children

    Seek it out, O barefoot ones of the house, or roam

  34. سمراء حنطيَّة يغترّ مبسمها

    فكلها بشفاه اللّثم مرشوف

    A brown wheaten woman whose smile is tempting

    Yet all of her is plucked by the lips

  35. دقَّت يدُ الرزق بابي وهي ناشزةٌ

    فقلت كسّ أخت رزق فيه تعسيف

    The hand of sustenance knocked at my door, unyielding

    So I said, "May the sister of sustenance be sexually abused," in provocation

  36. وعلّمتني نظمَ الشعر من دُرَرٍ

    ما بيت واحدها بالفقرِ مزحوف

    And she taught me the intricacies of poetry

    With no line immersed in poverty

  37. هذا هو الخبز يا أجنادَ أدعية

    وفي المجاريب حرب الليل مصفوف

    This is the bread - O battalions of my faith

    And war at night is set out in the bowls

  38. خبزٌ وخيرٌ وجبرٌ بعد ما نطقت

    فللمحامد تجنيسٌ وتصحيف

    Bread, bounty and restoration after I spoke

    Rhyming, wordplay and orthographic alterations for praises

  39. لينطق الجود بعد العيّ ذا مدحٍ

    تأتي وما عندها في القولِ تكليف

    Let praise speak after fatigue, this

    Comes without difficulty of expression

  40. لا زلت ممتدحاً منِّي بنظمِ فتىً

    في المادحين فلا يثنيه معروف

    I still praise the poetry of a youth among praisers

    With merit, none can deter him from what is known

  41. تجلّ عن نظم ورَّاق مدائحه

    وعن ثناً فيهِ للجزَّار تقطيف

    His polished eulogies shine, and shine

    Above praise containing butcher's exaggeration

  42. نظَّفت فكري لكم من حبّ ذي قلم

    فإن شرط وعاء الحبّ تنظيف

    I purified my thoughts of love for the one with a pen

    For cleansing is the condition for a vessel of love
