1. شبّ الحشا قولُ الكواعب شابا

    وآهاً لهنّ كواعباً وشبابا

    The muttering of the love-sick is the speech of gazelles,

    Alas for them - gazelles and youths!

  2. ومضى الصبا ومن التصابي بعده

    صيرتُ للدمعِ الدماءَ خضابا

    The spring has passed, and after being joined with it,

    I have dyed my tears for it with blood.

  3. هيهات أقصرُ لهوَه وتوزّعت

    أوقاتُ من فقدَ الصبا وَتصابا

    Alas! My carefree joys have grown short

    And the times when I lost my spring and youth.

  4. وغضضت جفني عن مغازلة الظبا

    ولقد أجرّ لبرْدِه أهدابا

    I have closed my eyelids from flirting with does,

    And indeed its coldness has drawn down my eyelids.

  5. ولقد أرودُ الحي خلت رِماحه

    دَوحاً وموقعَ نبلهِ أعشابا

    And indeed I have wanted to break my spear

    Into firewood, and make its place of casting into grass.

  6. فأدير إمّا بالمدام معَ الدُّمى

    أو بالدِّماء مع الكماة شرابا

    So I will turn either to wine with revelry,

    Or to blood with brave warriors as my drink.

  7. أسدٌ تآلفني الظباءُ وتختشي

    من صارمي الصقر الغيور ذبابا

    I lived in harmony with the does, who shied from

    My sharp sword - jealous falcon of the flies.

  8. أيامَ في ظليْ صبا وصبابةٍ

    أحبى بألطاف المها وأحابى

    Days in my shadow were spring and springtime,

    Graced with gentle winds and clouds.

  9. من كل ناشرَةِ الوفا طائيَّةٍ

    قد ناسبت بنوَالها الأنسابا

    With every curly-tressed charmer,

    Her glances matched their tendrils.

  10. غيدآء تسفرُ عن محاسنٍ دُميَةٍ

    حلت بصدغي شعرها محرابا

    A fawn revealing lovely features

    Her hair adorned my temple like a prayer niche.

  11. سلبت بمقلتها فؤاداً واجباً

    حتى عرفت السلب والإيجابا

    She captivated a devoted heart with her gaze

    Until I knew loss and gain.

  12. إن شئتُ من كاساتها أو ثغرِها

    أرشفتُ خمرا أو لثمت حبابا

    If you wish for her cups or her mouth,

    I would sip wine or kiss dew.

  13. أو شئت إن غابت يغيب رقيبها

    فذكرتُ موصول اللقا وَربابا

    Or if you wish - when she is absent, her watchdog is too -

    Then I recalled joined meeting and intimacy.

  14. ولهجت بالأغزالِ أتبع زورها

    صدقاً بمدح ابن النبي منابا

    I exaggerated in praising the fawns, following their fraud,

    Truthfully, imitating the son of the prophet.

  15. وإذا الحسين سما له حسن الثنا

    فلقد أطالا مظهراً وأطابا

    And when Hussein is praised, his praise is beautiful,

    So they have prolonged the appearance and made it excellent.

  16. أزكى الورى أصلا وأعلاهم يداً

    فرعاً وأَكرَمهم جَنىً وجنابا

    The purest lineage and highest of hand,

    Branch, and most generous of lineage and side.

  17. وأجلُّ أَحساباً فكيف إذا جلت

    سُوَر الكتاب بمدحه أنسابا

    The greatest lineage - so how when

    The brilliant chapters of the book praised his lineage?

  18. نجم الفواطم من كرائمِ هاشمٍ

    والمرضعين من الكرامِ سحابا

    Star of the Fatimids, from the bounties of Hashim,

    And the nurtured ones from the generous clouds.

  19. والخمسة الأشباح نورا قبل ما

    رَقمَ السماكُ من الدجى جلبابا

    The five bodies were light before

    The darkness embroidered its cloak.

  20. ذو الفضل لا تحصى مواقع سحبه

    والشخص منفرداً يضيء شهابا

    Of overflowing virtue, his attacks can't be counted,

    And his person alone shines like a flame.

  21. ومناقب البيتِ الذي من أفقه

    بدت الكواكب سنَّة وكتابا

    The virtues of the house from which appeared like constitution

    The stars, the law.

  22. وعجائب العلمِ التي من بحرها

    ماس اليراع بطرسه إعجابا

    And wonders of knowledge from whose sea

    The Pleiades skimmed, amazed.

  23. ومحاسنُ الأقوال والشيمِ التي

    قسمتْ لديهِ وسميتْ آدابا

    And beauties of words and manners which

    He allotted and named "etiquette."

  24. عَلَويَّةٌ أوصافها عُلْوِيَّةٌ

    قد بذّت الإيجاز والإسهابا

    His descriptions are sublime, sublime,

    Conciseness and wordiness have become confused.

  25. في كفه قلمٌ يُخافُ ويُرتجى

    فيجانس الإعطاءَ والأَعطابا

    In his grasp is a pen, feared and hoped for

    It hits and misses equally.

  26. عصمت منافعه العواصم تارة

    شهداً يصوب بها وطوراً صابا

    His benefits guard the strongholds, sometimes,

    Straight arrows, and a correct, striking pilgrimage.

  27. بسداده تجلى الخطوبُ ويجتلي

    صوب الكلامِ أوانِساً أترابا

    By his rectitude, misfortunes have been revealed and unravelled,

    Directed towards speech, intimate conversations.

  28. عجباً له مما تضيءُ سطوره

    سبلَ الهدى وتحير الألبابا

    Wondrously, his lines illuminate

    The paths of guidance, and confuse intellects.

  29. جمدَت به سحب الحيا ولو أنه

    يوم الوغى لمسَ الحديد لذَابا

    By him the clouds of life solidified, and if

    On a day of conflict, it touched iron - it would melt.

  30. إن جاد أرضاً لفظُهُ فكأنما

    نبتت لسكر عقولنا أعنابا

    If he is generous, the foliage of his words

    Grows grapes that intoxicate our minds.

  31. حتى إذا جاءت صواعقُ رعبهِ

    أضحى جميع نباتها عنّابا

    Until when terrors of awe came from him

    All its vegetation became thorns.

  32. لله درّكَ يا حِمى حَلبٍ لقدْ

    أمطرت صوب ندائه وصوابا

    By God, your worth - O protector of Aleppo -

    You have rained towards his call and correctness.

  33. من كلّ فاتنة الترسُّل لو بدت

    لنُهاك يا عبد الرحيمِ لغابا

    No matter how alluring the freely-flowing charmer appears to you

    O Abdul Rahim, you would refrain.

  34. ونظيمةٍ دَرَتِ البداةُ أن في

    حَضرِ الممالك عندها أعرابا

    And a composer - the nomads know that

    In the heart of the cities, she has nomads.

  35. هشمت فخارَ العرب هاشمُ واحتوت

    حتى القريض لنسلها أسلابا

    Hashim broke the pottery of the Arabs, and contained

    Even Quraish, capturing their flags.

  36. قلعت بها أوتاد كلّ معاند

    وتمسكت هي للسما أسبابا

    She uprooted the pegs of every obstinate one,

    And she held onto the ropes of heaven.

  37. ولمثلها الضَّلِّيل ضلَّ فكيف لو

    يُدْعى تكلف بدأةً وجوابا

    And how could her like go astray? So if

    She is called "innovative" in her beginning and end,

  38. يا ابن الوصيّ وصية بمقصر

    من بعد ما جهدت قُواه ولابا

    O son of the trustee, a trust from one who weakened

    His strength after striving and withering.

  39. في نظمه عنكم وخطّ يراعهِ

    صغر فلا ألفاً أجادَ ولا با

    In composing it about you - and the quivering of his spear -

    Smallness belittled, and excellence refused.

  40. باب البديع فُتوحكم وأنا امرؤٌ

    لا طاقةً لي في البديعِ ولا با

    The gate of rhetoric - through you opened -

    And I am a man, no ability in rhetoric or refusal.
