1. قاسي الجوانح لين الأعطاف

    أهواه في الحالين غصن خلاف

    The one with strong determination yet gentle in manners

    I love him in both states, he is unique

  2. رشأ من الأتراك إلا أن في

    جفنيه ما في الهند من أسياف

    He is Turkish in origin, though in his eyes is the Indian sword

    Bring his waist close to his thighs

  3. أدنى حياصته إلى أردافه

    فانظر لزخرفها على الأحقاف

    And look at its decoration over his lower back

    And admire the softness of his waist complaining of its state

  4. واعجب لشكوى الخصر رقّة حاله

    ومن الغنى لشكاية الأرداف

    And from richness, the buttocks complain

    And I, leaving him in love, as if

  5. ولتاركي في حبِّه وكأنَّما

    إنسان عيني مُبتلى برعاف

    A human whose eyes are afflicted with epilepsy

    I ransom his slender waist when he walks

  6. أفديه عسال القوام إذا مشى

    وإذا يشاء فمعسل الترشاف

    And when he wants, he is smooth and gentle

    His figure is wrapped in the foliage of his hair

  7. تلتفّ قامته بواردِ شعره

    فأرى الشقا في جنَّةٍ ألفاف

    So I see the crescent in a paradise of coils

    And I see the path of righteousness by leaving him

  8. ولقد أرى طرق الرشاد بتركه

    لكنَّ قلبي مولّع بخلافي

    But my heart is inclined towards my mischief

    And my rebellion against him with a snatching waist

  9. واشقوتي منه بخصر مخطف

    نهب السلوّ وناظرٍ خطَّاف

    And a thieving, flirty glance

    If the one who cried my tears in his love fails

  10. إن خابَ سائل أدمعي في حبِّه

    فلكثرة الإلحاح والإلحاف

    It's because of too much pleading and importunity

    And I almost believe him, then he makes me hope through him

  11. وأكاد أصدّق ثم يطمعني بهِ

    بشر يغير الدّرّ في الأصداف

    That he would change the pearls on necklaces

    Neither despair holds me back from him, nor hope

  12. لا اليأس يثبت لي عليه ولا الرَّجا

    فكأنني في موقف الأعراف

    As if I stand on the border between them

    And perhaps the one blamed, when he cries

  13. ولربَّ ذي عذلٍ إذا بلَّ البكى

    رُدْنيّ باكر مسمعي بنشاف

    Repels me early by clearing his hearing

    What is between me and the prudish in the obsessed

  14. مالي وما للعذول في متحكمٍ

    لي في الهوى مضنٍ لديه وشاف

    I have in love a persisting, intimate friend

    Indeed, I seek connection to him not for anything

  15. إني لأطلب لا لشيءٍ وصله

    إلاَّ لينظر في الوصال عفافي

    Except to see my chastity in the connection

    My words were not disorderly during my twenties

  16. ما كانَ في العشرين يهفو منطقي

    أيكون في الخمسين فعلٌ هاف

    Could it be disorderly actions in my fifties?

    It is a trait inherited from the wise ancestors

  17. شيمٌ عن السلف الذكيّ ورثتها

    لا في الصبى عِيبتْ عليّ ولا في

    No blemish was blamed on me in my youth or in

    When I trace my Arab lineage

  18. لي حين أنسب أسرةٌ عربيةٌ

    كادتْ تعدّ الشهب من أحلافي

    The stars almost count as my allies

    And virtues that I have heard, which are

  19. وفضائل ما قد سمعت وإنها

    لسامعِ الأشراف كالأشناف

    To the noble listener like spears

    And perhaps a blossom whose chastity is for gathering

  20. ولربَّ وردٍ عفته لتدلكٍ

    ولو أنه نهر المجرَّة طاف

    Even if it were the river of Al-Mujarr

    How patient are the days in neglecting

  21. ما أجور الأيام في إهمالها

    حقِّي وأعدّ لها عن الصناف

    My right, and I prepare for them without classification

    I complain of the delay of time, yet these are

  22. أشكو التأخّر في الزمان وهذه

    شيمي لديه وهذه أسلافي

    My traits with him, and these are my ancestors

    Kindly he made religion and life dependent

  23. عطفاً أحال الدين والدنيا على

    حالي فعندك يحسن اسْتعطافي

    On my state, so with you, my plea gains favor

    If I do not stay as a guest at your door coming

  24. إن لم أبت ضيفاً لبابك قادماً

    فاجعل كتابي واحدَ الأضياف

    Then make my letter one of the guests

    And the gates of the village of his return

  25. وأجزت باب قرى عوائد نحوه

    أن لا يجوز لديه حذف مضاف

    Not to allow deletion of an annexation

    Where is there for hopes like you a sponsor

  26. من أين للآمالِ مثلك كافلٌ

    أم أين للأحوالِ غيرك كاف

    Or where is there for states other than you sufficient?

    You are the aid when the clouds fail

  27. أنت الغياث إذا الغمائم أخلفت

    وعد الثرى بالدّرّ في الأخلاف

    The promise of the land in the later times

    And the one sought for succor, with thousands

  28. والمستماحة في الندى آلافه

    والواحد المربي على الآلاف

    And the singular nurtured above thousands

    The rain of Damascus and the Nile of Egypt, if

  29. غيث الشآم ونيل مصر إذا شتت

    يوماً وضاقت رحلةُ الإيلاف

    One day dispersed and the trip of union narrowed

    They stretched to the Judge of Judges, the hand of hope

  30. مدَّت إلى قاضي القضاة يدُ الرَّجا

    فأمدَّها بعوائدِ الإتحاف

    So he stretched it with the habit of bestowal

    He is the Kaaba of virtue around which

  31. هو كعبة الفضل التي قد أغربت

    أهل المقاصدِ حولها بطواف

    The people of purposes made pilgrimage

    His pens are like arrows, precise

  32. أقلامه مثل السهام سديدةٌ

    لكنَّها للوفدِ كالأهداف

    But for the delegation they are like gifts

    They were enveloped with the promise of the hopeful, so all

  33. حفيت بوعدِ الآملين فكلّها

    يسعى إلى لقيا المؤمَّل حاف

    Of them seek to attain the wished for destination

    In the palm of the pouring of bounty, as if they are

  34. في كفِّ فيَّاض النوال كأنها

    لمعُ البروق بعارضٍ وكَّاف

    The gleam of lightning in a high, dense cloud

    No flaw in him but a bestowal causing embarrassment

  35. لا عيبَ فيه سوى عطاءٍ مخجلٍ

    جهد المدائح زائد الإسراف

    Above the effort of praise, exceedingly generous

    An idol whose radiance heals, as if

  36. وثناً يشفّ ضياؤه فكأنما

    في أعين الأعداءِ منه أشافي

    In the eyes of enemies, from it are healing ointments

    Attributes of glory that yielded fruit, so they hummed

  37. أوصاف مجدٍ أينعت فترنَّمت

    بالسجعِ فيها ألسنُ الوُصَّاف

    With prose in which the tongues of poets sang

    And virtues that extended for ages

  38. ومناقب قد يمَّمت أمد العلا

    فقفت سوابقها الحسان قواف

    So its precedents ceased, excellent in order

    And pride of a house of nobility and authority equivalent

  39. وفخار بيتٍ في السيادةِ وازنٌ

    ما بيت نظم فخاره بزحاف

    To no house whose pride poetry exaggerated with embellishment

    A house which Abu Dulaf constructed and with his eloquence

  40. بيتٌ أبو دلفٍ بناه وبالغت

    أنباه في شرف وفي إشراف

    Made brilliant in honor and nobility

    None of the Arabs prided but Hashim

  41. ما فاخرته العرب إلاَّ هاشماً

    فغدت إليه هشيمةَ الآناف

    So they became around it the rabble of the riffraff

    Or the noble Persians obeyed its dignity

  42. أو سامت الفرس الأوائل عزّه

    لتقطّعت أكتاف ذي الأكتاف

    Their shoulders would have been severed, powerless and weak

    It remains over the passage of time

  43. تبقى على مرِّ الزمان وغيره

    عاف الذّرى متوعر الأكناف

    Lofty, possessor of greatness in builds

    O you whose abode of pride, when proven no longer

  44. يا من مقام فخاره المحمود لم

    تحتج دلائله إلى كشَّاف

    Requires its evidence to be unveiled

    By your resolve, sciences became clear, all

  45. وضحت بهمَّتك العلوم فكلها

    إجماع متفق بغير خلاف

    Agreed conclusively without dispute

    After you the early ones prayed and their

  46. ووراك صلَّى السابقون وسلمت

    آداؤهم من مثبتٍ أو ناف

    Traditions from one who affirms or denies are secured

    By you the noble law gained distinction in station

  47. وبك ازدهى الشرع المنيف مقامه

    وأقرّ رائد روضه المستاف

    And the guide of its meadow set firm

    It is protected by a spear whose possessor guards you

  48. يحميه رمحٌ من يراعك نافذٌ

    ويقيك درعٌ من سجلّك ضاف

    And a coat of mail made for you covers it

    And if the king sought your view in the darkness of

  49. وإذا اسْتشار الملك رأيك في دجى

    أمرٍ ثنيت الصبح في الإسراف

    A difficult matter, you elucidated the dawn clearly

    Wondrous is one like you, who neglects my state

  50. عجباً لمثلك كيف يهمل حالتي

    من بعد ذاك العطف والإسعاف

    After that care and relief

    And I have the summer, yet in my loved ones is a heat

  51. وليَ المصيف وفي حشايَ حرارةٌ

    للهمّ فوق حرارة المصطاف

    For worries above the heat of the resort

    And it is enough of my implements that nothing in me but

  52. وكفى عداتي أنني ما فيّ أن

    ورد الشتا إلا لسانيَ داف

    My tongue withers in the winter

    And of afflictions, that my resolve and youth

  53. ومن الحوادث أن عزمي والصبى

    أوْدَى فليتَ الحادِثات كفافي

    Lead astray, if only the afflicted were enough for me

    And for the distance of your door, a fire blazed in the courtyard

  54. ولبُعد بابك وُقد نارٍ في الحشا

    ترمي بكلّ شرارةٍ كطراف

    Throwing sparks like the sides of fingers

    Despite that the soil of your tomb dries my happy state

  55. بالرّغم أن يجفو ترابك مبسمي

    لكنه غدر الزمان الجافي

    But it is the treachery of the arid times

    And if I sat back, then the riding beast of my praises is

  56. ولئن قعدت فإنَّ ركبَ مدائحي

    متواصلُ الأعناقِ والإيجاف

    Continuous of necks and charging ahead

    Take them to you, spoken words

  57. خذْها إليك كلامةٍ مسرودةٍ

    يوم الفخار وحلّة أفواف

    On the day of pride and the solution of difficulties

    I composed them for you while the stars are as if

  58. نظّمتها لك والنجوم كأنها

    في الأفقِ من تعب المسير غواف

    In the horizon, exhausted from the tiring journey

    And the eagle rises between them with striding steps

  59. والنسر ينهض بينها بقوادمٍ

    لكنهنَّ عن العيان خواف

    But they are fearful of witnessing

    So it came to you of the genus of beauty, unique

  60. فأتتك من صنف الجمال بديعة

    والنظم مثل بنيه ذو إنصاف

    And the composition is like its structure, just

    Among the people is one who walks on two feet in

  61. في الناس من يمشي على رجلين في

    نظمٍ ومن يمشي على أخلاف

    Composition, and one who walks on heels
