أمنزل ذات الخال حييت منزلاً

وإن كانَ قلبي فيك بالوجد مبتلى

A house of the cheek-marked, have you inhabited an abode,

Though my heart with passion for you is afflicted,

لك الله قلباً لا يزال مقيداً

بشجوٍ ودمعاً لا يزال مسلسلا

May God give you a heart that remains devoted,

With yearning and tears that remain continuous,

يعبر عن سر الهوى وأضيعه

فيا لك دمعاً معرباً راح مهملا

Expressing the secret of love though I lose it,

For you a tear expressing flows neglected.

كفى حزناً أن لا أراقب لمحة

ولا أنظر اللّذّات إلاّ تخيّلا

It's enough of sorrow that I don't watch a glance,

And don't look upon delights except imagining,

ولا أستزير الطيف خوف فراقه

لما ذقت من طعم التفرّق أوّلا

Nor do I consult the specter fearing its departure,

Since I tasted the flavor of parting at first,

وأقسم لو جاد الخيال بزورةٍ

لصادف باب الجفن بالفتح مقفلا

And I swear if imagining gave falsely,

It would meet the eyelid closed with the opening locked,

وأغيد قد أضنى العواذل أمره

فقل في أسى أضنى محبًّا وعذّلا

And I sing while love's youth their matter saddened,

So say in the most saddening sorrow a loving and blaming one,

غرير رنت أجفانه ووصفنه

فراح كلانا في الورَى متغزّلا

A gazelle whose eyelids twittered and dimpled them,

So we both went into love's valley strolling.

إذا شئت أن أشدو بأوصاف ثغره

بدأت ببسم الله في النظم أوّلا

If you want me to eulogize with descriptions of his mouth,

I'd begin with In the name of God in the poem first,

حذار عوادي القتل من سيف طرفه

فما كسر الأجفان إلا ليقتلا

Beware the lethal disasters of the edge of his sword,

For he broke not the eyelids except to kill,

بليت به ساجي اللحاظ كليلها

وما زال تعذيب الكليلة أطولا

I'm afflicted by him who made sleepless the tender-eyed doe,

And the doe's torture remains longer,

إذا ما بدا أو ماس أو صان أو رنا

فما البدر والخطّيّ واللّيث والطّلا

If it appears or touches or protects or neighs,

Then neither the moon, the inscriber, the lion or the hills,

وقالوا أتحكيه الغزالة في الضحى

فقلت ولا لحظ الغزالة في الفلا

And they said does the gazelle narrate it at dawn?

So I said the gazelle doesn't glance in empty wilderness,

فلا تنكرا منه حلاوة لحظه

فذاك أراه بالنعاس معسلا

Don’t deny the sweetness of his amorous glance,

For I see him with drowsiness made smooth,

ولا تعجبا من ردفه وثباته

فلولا وشاحا عطفه لتهيّلا

Don’t be astonished at his firmness and composure,

If not for his cloak clasping his shoulder he would slip,

غدا البدر أن يحكي سناه وإنما

رأى مللاً من خلقه فتنقّلا

Tomorrow the moon will tell of its flaw, but indeed,

It saw boredom in its creation so it tossed and turned,

وماثل ريق النحل لذة ريقه

فقال اللّمى ما أخجل المتنحّلا

And the honey's saliva equals the pleasure of his saliva,

So the thirsty said how bashful is the honey-tongued!

تبارك من جلّى صحائف أوجهٍ

وأوضح آيات الثغور ورتّلا

Blessed is He who clarified the leaves of faces,

And elucidated verses of mouths and recited,

وشيد للملك المؤيد رتبة

من المجد تملي المادح المتوسلا

And built the rightly-guided king a position,

Of glory that fills the praising supplicant,

مليك رقى قبل الصبا كاهل العلى

فكيف وقد أبصرته متكهّلا

A king who ascended the shoulder of sublime before youth,

So how when I saw him adorned?

كريم الثنا نال الكواكب قاعداً

وجاوز غايات العلى متمهّلا

Generous of praise, he attained the stars seated,

And surpassed the limits of sublimity slowly,

تخاف الغوادي من نداه كسادها

وما نفحت كفّاه إلا لتفعلا

The valleys fear the decline of his brilliance,

And his palms blew except to ignite,

يقولون أعدى باليمين يساره

فجادت فمن أعدى الذي جاد أوّلا

They say he attacks with his right, his left,

So his generosity poured forth, which poured first?

ومن في المعالي قد تقدَّم ورده

أجلْ إنها عادات آبائه الأولى

And who in the heights preceded his approach,

Indeed they are the habits of his first forefathers,

ملوك إذا قام الزمان لمفخرٍ

غدا بليالي ملكهم متجمّلا

Kings when time stood for pride,

Their nights of rule became adorned,

كرام ثوَوا ثم استقلّ حديثهم

فأحزن في عرض البلاد وأسهلا

Nobles who sought refuge then took over their narration,

So it saddened throughout the land and facilitated,

أناملهم تحت الثرى ربع مائه

وأقدامهم يكفيه أن يتزلزلا

Their fingers beneath the ground a fourth of a hundred,

And their feet suffice that they tremble,

رقوا ما رقوا من سؤدد ثم قوّضوا

فزادَ على ما أنهجوه من العلا

They ascended what they ascended of misfortune then demolished,

So they increased over what they paved of elevation,

هنيئاً لدست الملك بدراً وغرَّة

إذا انْهلَّ في يوم الندَى وتهللا

Congratulations to the hand of a king, a full moon and a brilliant star,

When it drips on a day of dew and exults,

دع الغيث بنار البرق والطود راسياً

ويمّمه إن راعَ الزمان وأمحلا

Let the rain leave the fire of lightning and let the towering mountain persist,

And direct it if the time tends and shifts,

لراحة إسماعيل أصدق موعداً

وساحته الفتحاء أمنع مقفلا

For Isaac's comfort the truest promise,

And its open plain the firmest lock,

هنالك تلقى أنعماً تترك الثرى

يراد وعزماً يترك الماء يصطلى

There you find easier gifts that leave the ground,

A purpose that leaves the water pouring,

وأصيد من نسل الملوك إذا انْتدى

رأيت معمًّا في السيادة مخولا

And I hunt from the lineage of kings when it inclines,

I saw an expert in rule enabled,

أخا كرمٍ تبغي العواذل عطفه

فتلقاه أندى ما يكونُ معذّلا

A brother of generosity whose affection the virgins desire,

So you find him most gentle when blamed,

دنا رفدُه قيد الوريد وإنَّما

ترفَّع حتَّى خاطبَ النجم أسفلا

His assistance approaches binding the vein, and indeed,

He remained aloof until conversing with the lower star,

فداه كرام العالمين فإنه

أبرُّهمُ مالاً وأشرف موئلا

May the generous of both worlds sacrifice for him, for he

Is the most righteous of them, wealth and family,

إذا فاخر الأنداد جاءَ فخاره

بهذا الثنا يستوقف المتأمّلا

If the peers compete, his pride comes

With this praise stopping the considerate,

وبالعلم وضَّاح الهدى متألِّقاً

وبالحلمِ فيَّاح الجنا متهدِّلا

With the bright guidance knowledge radiant,

With intuition the universe smoothing,

وبالمنطق الأزكى أسد محرَّراً

وبالسؤددِ الأجلى أغرّ محجَّلا

With the purest logic, an unleashed lion,

With the greatest calm, a tempting young camel,

وبالزهدِ موصول القيام كأنما

يغازل طرفاً من دجى الليل أكحلا

With asceticism, continuous rising as if,

Flirting with some of the darkness of night, powdered with kohl,

وبالبأس سلْ عنهُ الصوارم في الوغى

وكانت مواضي البيض أفصح مقولا

With valor ask about him the swords in the fray,

And the plains of eggs were most eloquent,

وما هي إلاَّ همَّةٌ ملكيَّةٌ

انْقضى عزمها فرض العلى وتنفَّلا

If it throbbed one day in the stern valley,

Wearing the spotted hide robe knotted,

يخصُّ سجاياها الوفا وهو مسلمٌ

وكان يهوديًّا يخصُّ السموألا

He resolved it so the night of his concerns dispelled,

And if the shining dawn resolved it, it wouldn't have dispelled,

ويغني عن الأمداح مشهور فضلها

وما الصبح محتاجٌ إلى الوصفِ والحلى

With a thirst whose negligence appeared,

The paths of sustenance were difficult for him until twisted,

وما الشمس في أفقِ السماء منيرة

تخال بها من ضحوة الغيظ أثكلا

He ascended and drank when it called him as if,

Conversing from the basin of the clouds a spring,

بأوضح للأبصارِ من مجدِه الذي

توقَّد حتَّى لم تجد متوقّلا

And a desolate desert whose end he severed,

So you met the known and left the unknown,

ثنى رجله فوق النجوم ولو علتْ

وطالتْ ثنى باعيه أعلى وأطولا

And I told my guide disembark me for these,

Are his dwellings, then rein in and trust,

وما روضة خاطت بها إبرة الحيا

من الودق ثوباً علق الوشي مسبلا

There I promised the elegant gardens, luxury,

And neighbored the clouds feeling at ease,

بأعبق من أوصافه الغرُّ نفحةً

وأبرع من ألفاظِه الزهر مجتلى

And spent in the shade of bliss nights,

That if shook would be twinkling stars gathering,

أوابد قد أعيى امرئ القيس قبلنا

سنا نجمها الهادِي فماتَ مضلَّلا

No fault in its luxuries but that,

It bestows bending the laden shoulder, adorned,

له راحة ضمَّت يراعاً ومرهفا

كأنَّهما زاداه بالمكثِ أنملا

And if I exhaust my praise, but indeed,

My falling short from it is to say so I'm bashful,

يراعاً إذا مدَّته يمناه بالندى

رأيت عباب البحر قد مدَّ جدولا

To your door, oh son of the most generous, I sent it,

To accompany praise from others arid,

وسيفاً كأنَّ القين سوَّاه جذوةً

فلو لو يعاهد بالطلا لتأكَّلا

And I sent it fresh as a laden branch,

And the meadow's blossom irrigated and the gentle breeze a chain,

مبيد لو أنَّ المرء ضاعف درعه

ومثله في نفسه لتجدَّلا

Impregnable in meaning, pulling with its head,

Noisily, and throwing from the dog's running a cub,

يؤيد خدّيه يدٌ ضربت به

دراكاً فما تحتاج كالبيض صيقلا

I fermented for it my mind and its words diffused,

As if I censed aroma in the pot a bundle,

ألا رُبَّ شأوٍ رامه فتسهَّلت

رباه وصعبٍ راضه فتذلَّلا

And emancipated my soul from laziness I promised it,

So I harvested but not my heart and for the emancipated the oath,

وجيشٌ كأن الجوّ قد مدَّ أنجماً

عليه ووجه الأرض أنبت دبَّلا

And you are who assisted me so you created it,

If not for shame, the soil wouldn't be wetted,

كأن عتاق الطير بين رماحه

بنودٌ تهاوى للطعان وتعتلى

So if the blind tries it before, he wouldn't say,

It's easy for us to say and do,

إذا نبضت يوماً بوادي قسيه

تلبس ثوب النقع بالنبلِ مجملا

And how many like it I gifted folded smoothly,

It almost out of intense ardor infiltrates,

رماه بعزمٍ فانْجلى ليل خطبه

ولو رامه الصبح المنير لما انْجلى

The reciter utters it so its words fill,

The mouth of vinegar a pearl or the mouth of hostility a cinder,

وذي ظمأة بادِي الخمول توعَّرت

عليه مساري الرزق حتَّى تحيلا

You gathered in your comfort's blessing its arts,

As the necklace gathers beads threaded,

علا وارْتوى لما دعاه كأنما

يشافه من حوضِ الغمامة منهلا

And the like of you whom its beauty's hands wore,

So it increased, doubled its fortune thus perfected,

وبيداء مقفار إليه قطعتها

فلاقيتَ معلوماً وفارقت مجهلا

You remained for this time extending if sorrow,

Your hands so it doesn't cease to untangle,

وقلت لخليّ أنزلاني فهذه

منازله ثمَّ اعقلا وتوكَّلا

And you remained for the pride of glory ascending,

And who sought the highest glory ascended,

هنالك عاهدت الرياض أنيقة

ترفّ وجاورت الغمائم همَّلا

I swore an oath none like you in existence,

So Islam deemed I unbind,

وقضَّيت في ظلِّ النعيم ليالياً

لو انْتقضت كانت كواكب تجْتلى

ولا عيبَ في نعمائها غير أنَّها

تجود متوهي الكاهل المتجمِّلا

وإني إذا أجهدتُ مدحي فإنَّما

قصاراي منها أن أقول فأخجلا

لبابك يا ابن الأكرمين بعثتها

أؤانس من مدحٍ عن الغيرِ جُفَّلا

وأرسلتها غرَّاء كالغصن يانعاً

وزهر الرُّبى ريَّان والريح سلسلا

ممنَّعة المغزى تجر برأسهِ

جريراً وتلقي من جرى الكلب جرولا

شببت لها فكري وفاحت حروفها

كأنيَ قد دخَّنت في الطرسِ مندلا

وأعْتقت رقِّي من خمولٍ عهدته

فحزت وَلا قلبي وللمعتق الولا

وأنت الذي أسْعفتني فصنعتها

ولولا الحيا لم يصبح الترب مبتَّلا

فلو رامها الطائيّ من قبل لم يقل

لهانَ علينا أن نقول ونفعلا

وكم مثلها أهديتها طيّ مدرجٍ

تكاد لفرطِ الشوق أن تتسلَّلا

يفوه بها الراوي فيملأ لفظها

فم الخلّ درًّا أو فم الضدّ جَندلا

جمعت بنعمى راحتيك فنونها

كما جمعَ السلك الجمانَ المفصَّلا

ومثلك من حلَّت أياديه حسنها

فزادَ وثنى حظّها فتكمَّلا

بقيت لهذا الدهر تبسط إن أسا

يديك فما ينفكُّ أن يتنصَّلا

ودمت لشأوِ المجد بالطول راقياً

ومن طلبَ المجد العليَّ تطوَّلا

حلفت يميناً ليسَ مثلك في الورَى

فما شرع الإسلام أن أتحلَّلا
