1. رأى الغصن أعطاف الغزال المقرطق

    فقامَ مقام المجتدي المتملق

    The branch saw the gazelle's swaying sides

    And stood like one infatuated, flattering

  2. وجاوبه والدمع يخطي فما درى

    إلى البحرِ يمشي أم إلى البدر يرتقي

    It answered, with tears tracing its mouth, not knowing

    Whether it walked to the sea or climbed to the full moon

  3. وما نافعي أطراف طرفيَ دونه

    إذا كانَ طرف القلب ليس بمطرق

    Of no use to me are the movements of my eyes without it

    If the eye of my heart is not blinking

  4. ليَ الله قلباً في اتّباع صبابة

    كعاذله من قالَ للفلكِ أرفق

    May God give me a heart in following the youth

    Like one reproaching the sky saying "be gentle"

  5. يميل لعذَّال الصبابة والهوى

    إذا شاءَ أن يلهو بلحية أحمق

    It leans towards the reproacher of youth and passion

    When it wishes to jest with the beard of a fool

  6. ويصغي إلى الواشي وليسَ بقائل

    ويقضي على علم بكلِّ مخرّق

    And listens to the slanderer though it says nothing

    And judges with torn knowledge

  7. ويحثو تراب السبق في وجهِ عاشق

    أراه غباري ثم قال له الحق

    And stirs up the dust of racing in a lover's face

    I see it as my dust, then it says to it "Enough"

  8. معنى بذي قدٍّ ثنى الرمح تابعاً

    لأدرب منه في الطعان وأحذق

    It means one with a twisted spear, a follower

    So I can train in stabbing and become more skilled

  9. معنى بظبيٍ ينهب الناس لحظه

    ويعزي إليهم كلّ سور وخندق

    It means a gazelle that steals people's glances

    And attributes to them every wall and trench

  10. من الترك إلا أنه أسمر اللمى

    لعُوب بأطراف الكلام المشقَّق

    Of the Turks, except it is dark-cheeked

    Playing with the edges of intricate words

  11. بروحيَ من لم يلقَ مضناه عادل

    بمثل خضوع في كلام منمَّق

    By my soul, one who has not suffered his justice

    With the humility of ornate speech

  12. مسدّد نبل المقلتين كأنما

    يخيّر أرواح الكماة وينتقي

    Straightening the arrows of the two eyelids as if

    Choosing the souls of arrows and selecting

  13. بجفن رشاً إن تسمه السحر لم يحد

    وإن تدعه حدّ الحسام فأخلق

    With an eyelid sprinkled, if magic names it, it does not limit

    And if it leaves it, it is the limit of sharp swords

  14. أباد قلوب العاشقين فلم يدع

    حبيباً لفاد أو رقيقاً لمعتق

    It destroyed the hearts of lovers, leaving

    No beloved to ransom or slave to free

  15. وأغرق عذَّالي بدمعي ولم أرد

    ولكنه من يرجم البحر يغرق

    And drowned my reproachers in my tears, and I did not intend

    But one who pelts the sea will drown

  16. هوى كشأ الرأي الفلاني أنسباً

    قنا ابن أبي الهيجاء في قلب فيلق

    Passion is suited to the opinion of so-and-so

    Like the spear point of Ibn Abi Al-Hayja in an elephant's heart
