1. بلّغا القاصدين أنَّ الليالي

    قبضت جملة العلى بالكمال

    Convey to the seekers that the nights

    Have taken in full the heights

  2. وقفا في مدارسِ النقلِ والعق

    ل ونوحا معي على الأطلال

    Stop at the schools of transmission and intellect

    And lament with me over the ruins

  3. سائلاها عسى يجيب صدَاها

    أين ولَّى مجيب أهل السؤال

    Asking them, may its echo respond

    Where has the answerer to questions gone?

  4. أين ولَّى بحر العلوم وأبقى

    بين أجفاننا الدُّموع لآلي

    Where has the sea of knowledge gone, leaving

    Between our eyelids tears to flow

  5. أينَ ذاك الذهن الذي قد ورثنا

    عنه ما في الحشا من الإشعال

    Where is that mind from which we inherited

    What the ardor holds from inflammation?

  6. أينَ ذاك البحث الذي يحرس الحف

    ل على غير أهبةٍ واحْتفال

    Where is that research which guards the circulation

    With no laxity or celebration?

  7. أينَ ملك الأقلام يوم انْتصارٍ

    كعوالي الرماح يوم نزال

    Where is the king of pens on the day of triumph

    Like the lofty spears on the day of battle?

  8. ينقل الناس عن حديث هداها

    طرق العلم عن متون العوالي

    Conveying to the people from his guidance

    The paths of knowledge from the lofty texts

  9. وتفيد الجنى من اللفظ حلواً

    حين كانت نوعاً من العسَّال

    And benefiting the harvest from his sweet words

    When it was a kind of honey

  10. أينَ تلك الأوصاف تنفح طيباً

    رخصت عنده فنون الغوالي

    Where are those descriptions diffusing fragrance

    For which arts of rhetoric were facile?

  11. يا لها من رزيةٍ في حشا الإس

    لام من وقعها كحدّ النصال

    What a calamity in the barrenness of Islam

    For whoever it struck like a piercing blade

  12. يا لها وقعة على الرمل أبقت

    للبرايا لواعجاً كالجبال

    What a blow upon the sands leaving

    For the wilds convulsions like mountains

  13. نقصت بهجة الحياة فلا ين

    كر تأثير للنقصِ بعد الكمال

    It diminished the delight of life, so no

    Effect of diminution remains after perfection

  14. وانْطوى مبسم العلوم وأغضت

    مقلة البحث دونها والجدال

    And the smile of knowledge has folded and closed

    Its eye beyond it and debate

  15. وكحَّلنا الجفون بالسهدِ حتَّى

    باتَ منها الكرى على أميال

    And we lined our eyelids with wakefulness until

    From it the spheres spanned miles

  16. أيُّها الراحل الذي عطَّلت من

    بعده القاصدون شدّ الرحال

    O you who departed and after whom

    The seekers disabled journeying

  17. كنت غوث الجود حقًّا ولكن

    ليس في الناسِ عنك من إبدال

    You were truly a downpour of generosity but

    Among people there is no substitute for you

  18. كنت دون الأنام عوناً على خف

    ض حياةٍ لنا بتمييز حال

    You were a supporter for us in reducing

    A life that we distinguished in state

  19. فليمت من يشا ويذهب من شا

    ء فإنَّا بعدها لا نبالي

    So let whoever wants to die and whoever wants to go, for

    After it we do not care

  20. كم ليمناك عندنا من أيادٍ

    ليس فيها لواصفٍ من شمال

    How much we enjoyed your hands among us

    With no describer among them askance

  21. كم لها من فتوَّةٍ وفتاوٍ

    قاضيات مآرب السوَّال

    How much bravery and chivalry they held

    Judging the goals of requests

  22. هي مثل الأطواق عند عفاةٍ

    وهي للملحدين كالأغلال

    They were like necklaces for maidens

    And for atheists like shackles

  23. غاب علم التفسير عنَّا وهمت

    كتب الفقه فيك بالأعوال

    The knowledge of exegesis is lost to us and

    The books of jurisprudence confused you with preoccupations

  24. ودموع الحديث سلسلها الحز

    ن وأنكى في القلبِ جرح النصال

    And the tears of hadith - sorrow chained them

    And the deepest wound cut the heart

  25. وأرى النحو واجماً ليس منه

    قلب زيد وقلب عمرٍو بخال

    And I see grammar silent, in it no

    Heart of Zayd and heart of Amr with defiance

  26. قصرت في الكلام مرتبة الأس

    ماء واعتل سائر الأفعال

    In speech the status of nouns is reduced and the rest of verbs disabled

    I wish I knew who to console for handwriting and the state of people desolate like mine

  27. ليت شعري لمن أعزّي على الخط

    ب وحال الأنام طرًّا كحالي

    Do you think, O son of Ali

    That my tears of sorrow are uninterrupted?

  28. أترى هل علمت يا ابن عليّ

    أن دمعي من الأسى متوالي

    You reside in the Garden of Bliss

    While my heart still burns for you

  29. أنت في جنة النعيم مقيم

    وفؤادي عليك بالنار صالي

    You are Malik's neighbor, and my heart

    Is Maliki in passions and tribulations

  30. أنت جارٌ للشافعيّ وقلبي

    مالكيّ الأهواء والأهوال

    Oh my misguidance after that life

    And my deprivation after that bounty

  31. يا ضلالي من بعد ذاك المحيّا

    وافتقاري من بعد ذاك النوال

    Bring my place of sorrow nearer me

    The breeze of my torment blew from Jumal

  32. قرّبا مربط الكآبة مني

    نفحت حرب لوعتي من جمال

    If I forgot the virtues, I would not be

    Among the people skilled in virtues

  33. لو نسيت الفضائل ما كن

    ت بناسٍ صنائع الأفضال

    How can I forget that brightness, and it is to me

    Renewed before my eyes and mind

  34. كيف أنسى ذاك الندى وهو عندي

    مستجدّ أمام عيني وبالي

    How can I devise from speech something elegant

    When he who knew my speech is gone?

  35. كيف أنشي من المقال بديعاً

    زال من كانَ عارفاً بمقالي

    That praise is lost from me, so the duty

    Of sorrows judged my heart at sunset

  36. زال عني ذاك الثنا فقضى قل

    بي فرض الأحزان عند الزوال

    And I withdrew from society, and it's no wonder

    After the suppressor of withdrawal died

  37. واعتزلت الورَى وليس عجيباً

    بعد ما مات قامع الاعتزال

    What heart has arrowheads of pain and affliction not struck it?

    What life's hopes clear up for a person when these are the deaths of hopes?

  38. أيّ قلبٍ لم يرمَ بعد سراهُ

    بفنون الأوجاع والأوجال

    What creature is immune from mortality

    As it creeps toward him like a specter?

  39. أي دنيا يصفو لها أمل المر

    ءِ وهذي مصارع الآمال

    What crown is there for the crescent moon in the horizon

    Casting people down with its arrows?

  40. أي خلق من المنية يحمى

    وهي تسري إليه مسرى الخيال

    Your place of rest has been generous, O Muhammad

    Beginning of the messenger by daybreak

  41. أي تاجٍ وللأهلة في الأف

    ق قسيّ ترمي الورَى بنبال

    And greetings to the virtues in your burial

    And favor, brightness, and loftiness

  42. جاد مثواك يا محمد غيث

    باسم البرق مستهل الغزال

  43. وسلام على الفضائل في لح

    دك والفضل والندى والمعالي
