1. سيَّج ورد الخدود بالآس

    فما لجرحي عليه من آسي

    The blush has fenced his cheeks with sadness,

    So my wound has no consolation over it,

  2. أغيد له فوقَ وجنتيه دمٌ

    يروي أحاديثَ قلبه القاسي

    Blood sheds above his cheeks,

    Relating tales of his cruel heart,

  3. يجرح قلبي آس العذراء وقد

    كانَ دواء الجراح بالآس

    The virgin's tear wounds my heart, and

    The solace for wounds had been in sadness,

  4. واعجباً للشجيّ ممتحناً

    في كلّ أحواله بإعكاس

    And how strange is the rending examiner

    In all his states with reversal,

  5. هذا وشرخ الشباب يؤنسه

    فكيف والشيب بعد إيناس

    As the youth cheers him up,

    So how about the gray hair after intimacy?

  6. يا شعرات المشيب أعدمني

    هناءَ عيشي بياضك الراسي

    O strands of gray hair, deprive me

    of the bliss of my life with your extending grayness,

  7. وكيف لي عيشةٌ مهنأة

    والبيضُ مسلولةٌ على راسي

    And how can I have a pleasant living

    While the gray is slipping down my head?

  8. أين زمان الشباب أقطعه

    وأين ميدانه وأفراسي

    Where is the time of youth? I long for it,

    And where are its arena and my steeds?

  9. أين مقالي يا صاحب الفرس ال

    نهد أرحني من طول وسواسي

    Where are my utterances, O owner of the unmatched horse,

    Give me relief from my constant worry,

  10. لا نهدَ إلاَّ من صدرِ غانيةٍ

    ولا كميتَ إلاَّ منَ الكاس

    No consolation except from the breast of a singing girl,

    No wine except from a goblet,

  11. من كفِّ لدن القوام مشتمل

    بفرعِه كالقضيب ميَّاس

    From the palm of a buxom lass with protruding

    breasts like a swollen penis,

  12. عففتُ عن كأسِهِ فأرشفني ال

    غبّ منها بقلبه القاسي

    I refrained from her cup, so she gulped me

    forcefully with her cruel heart,

  13. مدامه من فمٍ يضيق فما تن

    زل إلاَّ بمصِّ بوَّاس

    Her wine from a mouth that hardly opens,

    it only flows with intense kissing,

  14. جالسني أستضي بغرته

    فحبَّذا شمعتي وجلاسي

    She sat me to light up with her cheek,

    so good for my candle and sitting,

  15. وأنظم الشعر في سماحكم

    فحبَّذا كوكبي ونبراسي

    And I composed poetry in your generosity,

    so good for my star and lamp,

  16. تغزُّلي فيهِ والمدائح في

    عليّ قاضي النوال والباس

    I flirted in it and praise is in

    Ali, judge of bliss and affliction,

  17. قاضٍ قضى بالندى العميم فما

    في حكمِهِ محضرٌ لإفلاس

    A judge who has judged with bountiful dew, so

    there is no bankruptcy in his rule,

  18. الحارس الملك باليراعة لا

    يحتاج نضو سيوف حرَّاس

    The king's guard needs no sharpening of protectors' swords,

    Not to mention the night and day for the one

  19. ناهيكَ بالليل والنهار لذي

    أجرٍ وذكر أطراسٍ وأنفاس

    with reward, renown, and breaths,

    Stop, O son of God’s grace, how you vie

  20. سدْ يا ابن فضل الإله كيف تشا

    سيادةً ما لذكرها ناس

    for rule that people have no mention of,

    In east and west, every writer

  21. في الشرق والغرب كلّ ذي قلم

    كان شهيراً بذكرها خاسي

    became famous for mentioning it in humility,

    Like Ibn Abbad Al-Farsi who became

  22. مثل ابن عبَّاد الفارسي غدا

    مفترساً عند أبيّ فراس

    ravenous at Abu Firas’s,

    And the excellent one now is craving for adornments,

  23. والفاضل الآن عائزٌ لحلىً

    كم كنست من حديث مكناس

    how many it wiped out from the talk of Maknas,

    And the Moroccan minister has become,

  24. والمغربي الوزير أصبح من

    روعته يعتزي إلى فاس

    from its horror, seeking refuge in Fez,

    So O eloquent Abu Al-Qasim, indeed

  25. فيا أبا القاسم البليغ لقد

    ألوى صباح بضوءِ مقباس

    the dawn has twisted with the light of a lantern,

    Indeed, Ali the generous preceded Ali

  26. إنَّ عليا جواد سبق علىً

    قبل زهير وقبل جسَّاس

    before Zuhair and before Jassas,

    And Zuhair was not his eloquent poet

  27. وما زهير كنبتِ شاعره

    لا ليِّناً شعره ولا جاسي

    to soften his poetry or humble it,

    The merit of his master taught him rhyming,

  28. علَّمه النظم فضل سيِّده

    فجاء حلياً بغير وسواس

    so he came adorned without anxiety,

    Ali is an ocean that poured his jewels,

  29. عليّ بحر أفاض جوهره

    فنظمته الورى بمقياس

    so people versified him with a measure,

    And they dressed themselves in his virtues, thus

  30. وألبستهم علياه فاجْتلبوا

    إيناس نعماه قبل الباس

    they attained the bliss of his bounty before affliction,

    And they spent his innocent benevolence upon him,

  31. وأنفقوا تبره عليهِ ثناً

    في حالتيه إنفاق أكياس

    in his two states, the spending of purses,

    He called upon Egypt with hopes praising

  32. دعا لمصر رجايَ ممتدحاً

    نعماء سلطانها على راسي

    the bounties of its sultan upon my head,

    So I came rushing upon the pyramids and the eye,

  33. فجئت أسعى على المحاجر والع

    ين سعيداً رملي وإحساسي

    happy with my sand and senses,

    I did not stop roaming the doors of the best of kings,

  34. أبواب خير الملوك لا برحت

    أركان حجّ وحطّ أحلاس

    the corners of pilgrimage, dismounting and sitting,

    His merit brought me through the hand of one

  35. قرَّبني فضلها على يدِ من

    لله فضلٌ به على الناس

    who has a favor from God upon people,

    O master, you attached his glories

  36. يا سيِّداً ألحقت مفاخره

    بآل حمدان آل مرداس

    to the house of Hamdan, the house of Mirdas,

    Honoring me necessitated wearing me

  37. إلباس تشريفي اقتضى فأزل

    إلباس حسنى بحسنِ إلباس

    the dress of beauty with the goodness of dressing,

    I still have a life of green hope

  38. لا زلت في الخضر عيش ذي أملٍ

    عداكَ والحاسدون في الباس

    apart from you while the envious are in misery,
