1. حجبت ولم أحسب سنا البدرِ يحجب

    ولا خلتهُ في باطنِ الأرضِ يغرب

    You vanished and I did not think that the full moon would vanish

    Nor that it would set into the belly of the earth and disappear

  2. وأوْرَثتْ عيني جود كفِّكَ فانْبرت

    تسحُّ بأنواءِ الغمام وتَسكُب

    And your bountiful hands made my eyes inherit weeping

    That pours with the wisps of clouds and spills over

  3. يذَكرْني بدرُ السماءِ سِميّه

    فها أنا أرعى كلّ بدرٍ وأرقب

    The full moon in the sky reminds me of his beauty

    So here I am, observing every full moon and watching

  4. ومذ آثرَت فيكَ الكواكب حكمها

    صددت فما يرعى بجفنيَّ كوكب

    And since the stars chose your rule over them

    I rove, no star is observed by my eyelids

  5. يقولون إن الشهب في كبدِ السما

    لها أسدٌ يردِي الأنامَ وعقرب

    They say that the shooting stars in the firmament of the sky

    Have a lion that preys on people, and a scorpion

  6. دعِ الأسدَ الأفقيّ يفترِسُ الورى

    وَدَعْ عقرب الأفلاكِ للخلق يسلب

    Leave the horizontal lion to savage people

    And leave the scorpion of the spheres to rob creation

  7. عليكَ خشيتُ الخطب قبل أوانِهِ

    وحاذرتُ صرفَ الدهرِ وهو مغيَّب

    I feared adversity before its time because of you

    And was wary of the turning of fate while it was absent

  8. وما حسبتُ كفّي نوالك كثرة

    ولكنْ المحذورِ الرَّدى كنتُ أحسب

    And I did not consider my palms receiving you plentiful

    But I was calculating the feared misfortune

  9. لمن يستجدّ الفكر بعدَك مدحةً

    يفضِّضُ في ألفاظها ويذَهب

    Whoever composes a new eulogy after you

    Babbles emptily in its phrases and rambles

  10. لمن نترجَّى بعد بابك إنَّه

    لِبذْلِ الندى بابٌ صحيحٌ مجرب

    Whoever we hope will give freely after your door

    It is truly a generous, proven door

  11. لمن تلتجي العافونَ بعد عوارِفٍ

    عوارفَ ما تسعَى إليه وتطلب

    Whoever cherishes the noble after your noble deeds

    Those noble deeds they strive for and seek

  12. على شرفِ الأخلاقِ بعدكَ والوفا

    سلامٌ كوجه الروض والروضُ معجب

    Peace be upon the nobility of character after you

    Like the face of a meadow, and the meadow is admired

  13. مضت صدقاتُ السرِّ بعدك وانْقضتْ

    فيا أسفاً للسرِّ بالصدرِ يذهب

    The secret charities after you have passed and vanished

    Oh what a pity for the secret that vanishes in the chest

  14. مضى رونقُ الآداب بعد وضوحه

    وغيَّب ذاك المنظر المتأدب

    The glamour of etiquette after its clarity is gone

    And that well-mannered spectacle is hidden

  15. ألا في سبيل الله ساكن مَلْحَدٍ

    وأوصافه في الأرضِ تُملي وتكتب

    Verily in the cause of God lies one in a grave

    And his traits in the earth dictate and inscribe

  16. فتىً كرُمت أنسابهُ وخلالهُ

    فآلاؤه إرثٌ لديهِ ومكسب

    A noble youth, his lineage and nature ennobled

    So his virtues are inherited wealth and gains

  17. سرى غير مسبوق ثناهُ وكيف لا

    وعنبره في نفحة الذِّكر أشهب

    Exclusive glory spreads his praise, how not

    And his sweet fragrance in the mention is most fragrant

  18. فمن مبلغٍ شيبان يوم ترحلت

    عُلاه بأن الأفق بالشهب أشيب

    So who will convey to Shayban when you traveled

    That the horizon with shooting stars is made white

  19. وأنَّ بني الآمال أعوز رعيهم

    وضاعوا فلا أمٌّ هناكَ ولا أب

    And that the sons of hopes without your shepherding

    Are destitute, no mother or father is there

  20. فقدناهُ فقدانَ الربيعِ فدهرنا

    جمادى وزالَ المستماح المرجب

    We lost you like the loss of spring so our time

    Is bleak, and the blossoming month has departed

  21. أخا أدبٍ بين المكارمِ والتقى

    على شرف الدَّارَيْن يسعى ويدأب

    A brother of cultivation, honor and piety

    Seeking the nobility of the two abodes and striving

  22. فلوْ لمْ تجُدْنا غُرّ نعماه جادَنا

    بفضل دُعاهُ وابلُ الغيثِ يسكب

    If we had not found your bounties sufficient we bewailed

    By your prayer's grace and the pouring rain's flood

  23. مضى حيث تنأى عنه كلُّ ذميمةٍ

    وأعماله بالصالحاتِ تقرّب

    You passed away where every blemish is far

    And your deeds draw near in righteousness

  24. وأيامهُ بدريَّةٌ لا يُضيرُها

    بوادِرُ ما تأتي وما تتجنب

    And your days are like full moons, no waxing fortunes

    That come and go can harm them

  25. تجاهدُ فيها النفس والعيش ممكنٌ

    وزبرج هذا العيش شيءٌ محبَّب

    In them the soul struggles and life is possible

    And this life's splendor is a thing beloved

  26. لحى الله دنيا لا تكون مطيَّةً

    إلى دَرَكِ الأخرى تزَمُّ وتركب

    God has made a world that cannot be a passage

    To the attainment of the next, coveting and riding

  27. عجبتُ لمن يرجو الرِّضا وهو مهملٌ

    وتسويفنا مع ذلك العلم أعجب

    I wonder at one who hopes for approval yet neglects

    While our procrastination, knowing that, is more wondrous

  28. وما هذه الأيامُ إلاَّ مراحلٌ

    وأجْدِرْ بها تقضي قريباً وتقضب

    These days are nothing but stages

    And it is best to finish them soon and pluck them

  29. إن كانت الأنفاسُ للعمرِ كالخُطَا

    فإنَّ المدى أدنَى منالاً وأقرب

    If breaths are steps toward life

    Then the distance is closer and nearer

  30. أساكن جناتِ النعيمِ مهنأً

    وتارِكنا في حسرةٍ نتلهَّب

    Inhabitant of the gardens of bliss congratulated

    While leaving us in burning regret

  31. سقى عهدكَ الصوبُ الملِثُّ فطالما

    سقانَا ملثّ من نوالك صيِّب

    Your era watered the parched valley, so it has long

    Quenched our thirst, pouring from your attainment

  32. ولا أغمدت أيدِي النوائِب غربها

    فما في حياةٍ بعدَ موتكَ مرغب

    And the swords of misfortune have not sheathed

    For after your death, life is undesirable
