1. نعاهُ للفضلِ والعلياءِ والنسب

    ناعيه للأرضِ والأفلاكِ والشهب

    They eulogized him for his nobility, excellence and lineage

    His eulogizer eulogized him for the earth, the heavens and the meteors

  2. ندباً وشرعاً وجوب الحزن حين مضى

    فأيّ حزن وقلب فيه لم يجب

    With weeping and legally obligated grief when he passed away

    So what grief when the heart did not respond?

  3. نعم إلى الأرض ينعى والسماءِ على

    فقيدكم يا سراةَ المجدِ والحسب

    Yes, he is eulogized on earth and in the heavens

    For your loss, O company of glory and merit

  4. بالعلم والعمل المبرورِ قد ملئت

    أرضٌ بكم وسماءٌ عن أبٍ فأب

    With knowledge and blessed work you have filled

    An earth through you and a heaven from an exemplary father

  5. مقدمٌ ذكرُ ماضيكم ووارثه

    في الوقت تقديمَ بسمِ الله في الكتب

    The mention of your past and your heir

    Comes first, saying "In the name of God" at the start of books

  6. آهاً لمجتهدٍ في العلم يندُبه

    من باتَ مجتهداً في الحزن والحرَب

    Alas! A diligent scholar in knowledge eulogized

    By one who stayed diligent in grief and wars

  7. بينا وفود الندى منهلة منناً

    إذ نازلتنا الليالي فيه عن كثب

    While caravans of dew were hosted by us

    Nights descended upon us, gathered closely

  8. وأقبلت نوَبُ الأيامِ ثائرةً

    إذ كان عوْناً على الأيامِ والنوَب

    And waves of days came raging

    When he was a helper against days and misfortunes

  9. ففاجأتنا يدُ التفريقِ مسفرةً

    عن سفرةٍ طال فيها شجوُ مرتقب

    So the hand of separation surprised us barefaced

    Revealing a feast in which prolonged sorrow was expected

  10. وجاءَنا عن إمامٍ مبتدأ خبرٍ

    لكن به السمعُ منصوبٌ على النُصب

    And news came to us of an Imam's beginning

    But hearing of it was declaimed with grammatical objects

  11. قالت دمشقُ بدمع النهرِ وأخبراً

    فزعت فيه بآمالي إلى الكذِب

    Damascus said, with the tears of a river, reporting the news

    I was alarmed and my hopes rushed to disbelief

  12. حتى إذا لم يدَعْ لي صدقهُ أملاً

    شرقتُ بالدمع حتى كادَ يشرق بي

    Until no hope left for me to believe its truth

    I cried with tears until I almost cried blood

  13. وكلمتنا سيوفُ الكتب قائلةً

    ما السيفُ أصدقُ أنباءَ من الكتب

    And books' swords spoke to us saying

    No sword relates news more truthful than books

  14. وقال موتُ فتى الأنصارِ مغتبطاً

    الله أكبرُ كلّ الحسنِ في العرَب

    And the youth of Ansar's death said, rejoicing

    God is the Greatest! All goodness among Arabs

  15. لقد طوى الموتُ من ذاكَ الفرندِ حلى

    كانت حلى الدّين والأحكام والرتب

    Indeed death folded the adornments of that virtuous one

    Which were the adornments of religion, laws and positions

  16. وخصّ مغنى دمشق الحزنُ متصلاً

    بفرقتين أباتتها على وصَب

    And Damascus' eulogy was specifically sorrowful

    With two detachments it refused over roughness

  17. كادت رياحُ الأسى والحزنِ تعكسها

    حتى الغصون بها معكوسة العذب

    The winds of anguish and grief almost reflected it

    Until its branches were inverted in sweetness

  18. والجامع الرَّحب أضحى صدرُهُ حرِجاً

    والنسر ضمَّ جناحيه من الرّهب

    And the vast mosque's chest became distressed

    And the eagle folded its wings in awe

  19. وللمدارس همٌّ كاد يدرسها

    لولا تدارك أبناءٍ له نُجب

    The schools had worries that almost ruined them

    If not for the intervention of its choice descendants

  20. من للهدى والندى لولا بنوه ومن

    للفضل يسحب أذيالاً على السحب

    Who of guidance and dew, if not for his sons? And who

    Of merit drags its train over the clouds?

  21. من للفتوَّةِ والفتوى مجانسة

    في الصيغتين وفي الآداب والأدب

    Who of chivalry and juristic rulings frequented

    In both forms, etiquette and literary taste?

  22. منْ للتواضعِ حيث القدر في صعدٍ

    على النجومِ وحيث العلم في صبب

    Who of humility where destiny is in ascents

    Above the stars and where knowledge is in outpouring?

  23. منْ للتصانيفِ فيها زينةٌ وهدىً

    ورجم باغٍ فيا لله من شهب

    Who of authorship in which is adornment and guidance

    And pelting an insolent one? By God, what a meteor!

  24. أمضى من النصلِ في نصرِ الهدَى فإذا

    سلَّت نِصال العِدَى أوقى من اليلب

    More conclusive than a blade in supporting guidance so when

    The blades of injustice were drawn, he was firmer than a mountain

  25. ذو همَّةٍ في العُلى والعلمِ قد بلغتْ

    فوق السماك وما تنفكُّ في دَأَب

    Of lofty aspiration and knowledge he reached

    Above the highest heaven and does not cease in diligence

  26. حتَّى رأى العلم شفع الشافعيّ بهِ

    وقالَ مِنْ ذا وذا أدركتُ مطلبي

    Until he saw that knowledge interceded through Al-Shafi'i

    And he said “From this one I have attained my request”

  27. من للتهجُّد أو من للدُّعَا بسطت

    به وبالجودِ فينا راحتا تعب

    Who spread comfort and generosity through devotions and supplications

    I yearn for every dignified one of his sons who cried

  28. من للمدائحِ فيه قد حلَت وصفَت

    كأنَّما افترَّ منها الطرسُ عن شنب

    And that is right, facing the pond and drinking place

    And every wilderness in the curtains, I said to it

  29. لهفي لنظَّامِ مدحٍ فكرُ أجمهعم

    بالهمِّ لا بالذَّكا أمسى أبا لهب

    O sister of the best brother, O daughter of the best father

    To Al-Hussain the journey of Ali concluded so no

  30. كأنَّ أيديهمو تبت أسىً فغدت

    من عيِّ أقلامِها حمَّالةَ الحطب

    Congratulating O you who left worry through triumph

    After Imam Ali we have no loyalty

  31. لهفي على الطهر في عرْضٍ وفي سمةٍ

    وفي لسانٍ وفي حكمٍ وفي غضب

    To time or kinship through lineage

    O you who lasted while praise spreads him

  32. محجبٌ غير ممنوعِ الندَى بسنَا

    عليائِه ومهيب غير محتجب

    You remained while the days destroyed us

    Sleep in the abode of unending bliss

  33. أضحى لسبكِ فخارٍ من محاسنه

    على العراق فخار غير منتقب

    While we are in the fire of unceasing grief

    Who can join me to Egypt where you gathered us

  34. آهاً لمرتحلٍ عنا وأنعمهُ

    مثل الحقائبِ للمثنين والحقب

    Even the bowels of the earth, so what rapture is in it!

    How strange is the state for me, a heart in Egypt and

  35. إيمان حبٍّ إلى الأوطانِ حرَّكهُ

    حتَّى قضى نحبه يا طول منتحب

    My body in Damascus and the tear of my eye in Aleppo

    Despite the elegies after praising you, they do not

  36. لهفي لكلِّ وقورٍ من بنيه بكى

    وهو الصواب بصوب الواكِف السرب

    Comfort us as we are amidst clamoring days

    No connection remains between our livers and worry

  37. وكلُّ باديةٍ في الحجب قلنَ لها

    يا أختَ خير أخٍ يا بنتَ خير أب

    No, and poetry has no cause for it

    As for poetry, were it not for your progeny, its

  38. إلى الحسين انتهى مسرى عليّ فلا

    هنأت يا خارجيّ الهمّ بالغلب

    Markets would be stagnant and deprived of pull

    The Chief Justice consoles for the Imam of piety

  39. بعدَ الإمام عليٍّ لا ولاءَ لنا

    من الزَّمان ولا قربَى من النسب

    In merit, he instructed the commandments for progeny

    You are in the ranks of the high for whom the sea

  40. يا ثاوياً والثَّنى والحمدُ ينشرهُ

    بقيتَ أنتَ وأفنتْنا يدُ الكرب

    Spoke of in wonder

    The aura of your father in knowledge, piety and generosity

  41. نمْ في مقامِ نعيمٍ غيرِ منقطعٍ

    ونحنُ في نارِ حزنٍ غير متَّئِب

    Did not disappear from us

    Your abundant goodness poured forth, O Judge of Judges

  42. من لي بمصر التي ضمَّتكَ تجمعنَا

    ولو بطون الثَّرى فيها فيا طربي

    Flowing with a tail over your resting place

    And every shining one from us walked to you

  43. ما أعجبَ الحال لي قلبٌ بمصرَ وفي

    دمشقَ جسمِي ودمعُ العينِ في حلب

    Greetings, every one with a grieving heart and depressed

    God's greetings we direct to you and follow with

  44. بالرُّغم منَّا مراثٍ بعد مدحك لا

    تُسلَى ونحنُ مع الأيَّامِ في صخب

    After your remoteness, there is no profit in life

    And lighten the grief, we will join those who

  45. ما بينَ أكبادنا والهمّ فاصلةٌ

    كلاَّ ولا لِصَنيعِ الشعرِ من سبب

    Passed away and spent nights of ancient calamities

    If he does not travel to us, we will travel to him

  46. أمَّا القريضُ فلولا نسلكُم كسدتْ

    أسواقهُ وغدتْ مقطوعةَ الجلب

    Over our days, the golden and shooting stars

    We are shadows made of dust

  47. قاضي القضاةِ عزاءً عن إمام تقى

    بالفضلِ أوصى وصايا المرءِ بالعَقب

    So the return of dust to dust is no wonder

  48. فأنتَ في رتب العليا وما وسعت

    بحرٌ تحدَّث عنه البحر بالعجب

  49. ما غابَ عنَّا سرَى شخص لوالدِه

    وعلمهُ والتُّقى والجود لم يغب

  50. جادتْ ثراكَ أبا الحكَّام سحبُ حياً

    تخطو بذيلٍ على مثواك منسحب

  51. وسارَ نحوكَ منَّا كلُّ شارقةٍ

    سلام كلُّ شجيّ القلب مكتئب

  52. تحيةُ الله نهدِيها وتتْبعها

    فبعدَ بُعدِكِ ما في العيشِ من أرب

  53. وخفِّف الحزن إنَّا لاحقون بمن

    مضَى فأمضَى شَبَاة الحادث الأشِب

  54. إن لم يسرْ نحوَنا سِرنا إليهِ على

    أيَّامنا والليالي الذَّهب والشهب

  55. إنَّا من التُّربِ أشباح مخلقة

    فلا عجيبٌ مآل التُّربِ للتُّرب
