1. ربع لعزَّة صامتٌ لا يفهم

    وقلوبنا في رسمِهِ تتكلَّم

    A silent quarter that does not understand

    While our hearts in its drawing speak

  2. لو لم تعف حماه غرّ سحائبٍ

    تهمى لعفَّته مدامع تسجم

    If its protector had not been forgiving of clouds

    That intended to stain its chastity, tears would have engraved

  3. وعلى البكى فلقد يروق كأنما

    قطع الغمام عليه برد معلم

    And weeping is pleasing to it, as though

    Clouds have cut through it with educated coldness

  4. ما أنسَ كم ليل عليه قطعته

    بالوصلِ تعذرني عليه اللّوم

    How many nights whose separation you made

    Blaming me for connection is difficult

  5. حيث الجرَّة فيه شكل سبيكة

    قد جرَّبت فالبدر منها درهم

    Where roughness in it is a form of ingot

    That I have tested, so the moon from it is a dirham

  6. وضجيعتي جود بحكمِ جفائها

    ولقائها يشقي المحبّ وينعم

    And my bedmate's generosity rules her estrangement

    Her meeting makes the lover miserable and blissful

  7. حوراء إلاَّ أنها قد أسكنت

    قلبي الذي تبلّته وهو جهنم

    A houri, except that she has inhabited

    My heart which her waters have made murky

  8. لو لم تكن روضاً لما كانت إذا

    هطلت غيوث مدامعي تتبسَّم

    If she were not a garden, then when

    The rain of my tears pours, it would not smile

  9. يا قلب هذا شعرها وجفونها

    فاصْبر إذا زحفَ السواد الأعظم

    O heart, this is her hair and her eyelids

    So be patient if the great darkness crawls

  10. ما الشمس أشرف بهجة منها ولا

    صوب السحائب من عليّ أكرم

    The sun is not nobler in joy than it, nor

    Are the clouds more generous to me when they gather

  11. بحرٌ تعلمنا المديح صفاته

    فعقوده منه عليه تنظّم

    A sea that taught us the traits of praise

    So its strands upon it are composed

  12. متيقّظ الآراء تحسب أنه

    كلُّ الأمور لديه غيباً يُعلم

    Awake in opinion, you'd think that

    All matters are to it unseen knowledge

  13. ومسدَّد الحركات ينهلّ الندى

    وتخيِّم العلياء حيث يخيّم

    Aim true in deeds, sipping the dew

    And the sublime tents where it camps

  14. جزل العطا والبأس حينَ خبرته

    كالسيفِ حينَ يروق ثمَّ يصمم

    Vast in giving and ferocity when experienced

    Like a sword when it pleases then determines

  15. تجني فيحلم بعد ما جاورته

    حتَّى تظنّ لديه أنك تحلم

    It reaps so it dreams after you dwelt with it

    That you'd think in its presence you're dreaming

  16. رفق كما انْحلّت خيوط غمامةٍ

    فإذا سطا نزلَ القضاء المبرم

    Gentle as the threads of a cloud disbanded

    So if it poured, the definite decree descended

  17. نطقَ الزمان به وكلٍّ مفاخر

    كلمٌ على لسنِ الزمان مجمجم

    Time spoke of it, and every pride

    Is words on the tongue of time engraved

  18. انظر لحبوته وأنعمه تجد

    من جانبي رضوى سيولاً تفعم

    Look to its love and gifts you will find

    From its two meadows, floods energizing

  19. لا عيب فيه سوى تسلّط جوده

    فالمال من نفحاته يتظلم

    No flaw in it but its overflowing generosity

    So money from its breaths hides

  20. لله ما بلغت مساعيه وما

    جمعت من المجد الذي لا يرغم

    I have not reached the extent of its efforts, nor

    Gathered the glory that does not cease

  21. كرم تصلي السحب خلف صلاته

    لكنها للعجز عنه تسلم

    Generosity that the clouds pray behind its prayers

    But from incapacity towards it, submit

  22. وثناً يقيد بالمدائح ذكره

    فتراه ينجد في البلاد ويتهم

    An idol that praises bind its mention

    Yet you see it savior in the land and blamed

  23. عبق الشذا تحكيه زهر كمائم

    في الروض إلا أنها تتكلم

    The fragrance of apple it tells like a flower

    In the garden, except that it speaks

  24. وفضائل لذّت وعزّ مرامها

    فكأنها شهدٌ يذاق وعلقم

    And virtues whose pleasure and pride intended

    So it is as honey tasted and chewed

  25. من كلّ ساجعة السطور كأنما

    همزاتها وُرْقٌ بها تترنم

    From every coursing line, it is as though

    Its punctuation is paper it hums on

  26. وقصيدة غرّاء تعلم أنه

    قد غادر الشعراء ما يُتردم

    And an ode it knows that it

    Has left the poets what they resent

  27. وتواضع كالشمس دانٍ ضوءها

    والقدر أرفع أن ينال ويكرم

    And humility like the sun, its light submissive

    Yet destiny is loftier than to gain and honor

  28. يممه يا راجيه تلقَ خلاله

    تسدى بها حلل الثناء وترقم

    Seek it, O hopeful, you will find through it

    Robes of praise opened and embroidered

  29. يرجى فيعطي فوقَ كلّ رغيبة

    وتطيش ألباب الرجال فيحلم

    Hope in it, it gives beyond every wish

    And minds of men in it wander and dream

  30. وإذا دعى الداعي نزال وجدتهُ

    بالرأيِ يطعن واليراع فيهزم

    And if the supplicant calls, you will find it

    With opinion piercing and the adversary defeating

  31. قلمٌ له في كلِّ يومٍ كريهة

    أنباء يجري في جوانبها الدّم

    A pen that for it each wretched day

    News runs through its edges with blood

  32. نادى سواد النفس لما أفصحت

    كلماته أنا عبد من يتفهّم

    The darkness of the soul proclaimed when its

    Words declared, I am a slave who comprehends

  33. وجرت بحكمته يدٌ من تحتِها

    أبداً يدٌ من فوقها أبداً فم

    And by its wisdom a hand beneath which

    A hand above it never, and a mouth never

  34. يا ابن الذين لهم سناً بهر الورَى

    وعلاً نبجّل ذكرها ونعظم

    O son of those whose fame dazzled existence

    And height we revere its mention and glorify

  35. شرفٌ ولكن بالهلالِ متوَّج

    فوقَ السماء وبالسماك مخيم

    Honor but crowned with the crescent

    Above the sky and with steadfastness camping

  36. يفدِي ربيع نداك مثرٍ كفّه

    أبداً جمادى أو نداه محرَّم

    Your springtime generosity will ransom fruit in its palm

    Never sparse or generous as deprived

  37. قرم تعيّس للمديحِ إذا شدا

    فكأنه عند المديح مذمم

    Wretched palm for praise if exhilarated

    It is as though for praise displeased

  38. أنت الذي لجأت إليه مدائحي

    أيام لا وزرٌ ولا مستعصم

    You are who my praises took refuge in

    Days with no might and none steadfast

  39. أغنيتني عمَّن إذا مدح امرؤ

    لم يفرحوا وإذا هجا لم يألموا

    You enriched me beyond those whom if one praises

    They do not rejoice, and if one slanders they feel no pain

  40. خذها إليك بديهة عربيّة

    ما نالَ غايتها زياد الأعجم

    Take it to you instinctively Arab

    It did not attain its purpose, increase of non-Arabs

  41. شابَ الوليد لعجزِهِ عن مثلها

    وارْتدَّ عن نظم القوافي مسلم

    It perplexed Al-Walid for his incapacity for its like

    And Muslim turned back from composing rhymes
