1. أعدَى بغيركُم دمع المحبينا

    حتَّى تلوَّن يوم البين تلوينا

    With others you have made lovers' tears overflow

    Until the day of separation was dyed with color

  2. يا هاجرين بلا ذنبٍ سوى شجنٍ

    بين الجوانح لا ينفكّ يشجينا

    O exiles who have no sin but yearning

    That will not cease to ache within our breasts

  3. لا تسألوا ما جرى من فيضِ أدمعنا

    فيكم وما قد جرى من غدركم فينا

    Ask not what our overflowing tears were over

    For you, and what your treason was against us

  4. أمَّا الرجاء فما راعيتموه لقد

    غرّت بدوركُم آمالَ سارينا

    As for hope, you never guarded it

    Your cycles deceived our hopes that strode

  5. كيف السبيل إلى إنصاف قصتنا

    إذ خصمنا في سبيلِ الحكم قاضينا

    How can our story find justice

    When our opponent in judgment is our judge?

  6. يجني علينا ويجني للأسى ثمراً

    شتَّان ما بين جانيكم وجانينا

    He does us wrong and reaps the fruits of sadness

    Far apart are your wrongs and ours

  7. كونوا كما شئتموا نأياً ومقترباً

    إنْ لم تكونوا من الدنيا كما شينا

    Be as you wish, distant or close

    If you are not to the world as we have deemed

  8. إنَّا وإن غدرت فينا عهودكُم

    من الذين همُ للعهدِ راعونا

    Though your vows betrayed us

    We are still true to our word

  9. في قبلة العشق أو ميدان حليته

    نحن المصلون أو نحن المجلّونا

    In devotion or its domain

    We are the worshippers or we are the adorned

  10. لا يقبس الوجد إلا من جوانحنا

    ويستقي الدَّمع إلا من مآقينا

    Passion ignites only from our breasts

    And tears draw only from our springs

  11. حمرٌ مدامعنا صفرٌ مناظرنا

    سودٌ مذاهبنا بيضٌ نواصينا

    Red are our tears, yellow our faces

    Black our creeds, white our temples

  12. لو كانَ في الألف منا واحد فدعوا

    مَنْ عاشقٌ ظنهم إياه يعنونا

    If one of a thousand us were a lover

    They would think he, not us, mad

  13. منذ اشْتغلنا بتكرار الغرام بكم

    لم ينس خوف دروس العهد ماضينا

    Since we have been consumed with loving you

    Fear of past vows left us not

  14. لكنكم وجلال الله يكلؤكم

    تسترفضون جميلاً من توالينا

    Yet you - God's glory light your way

    Spurn the grace of our succession

  15. وتصرفون لأقوام عنايتكم

    عنَّا وما قصرت عنكم مساعينا

    And grant your care to other tribes

    Not us, though our efforts for you never flagged

  16. هي الحظوظ فعشْ منها بما وهبت

    ولا تقل عالياً عزمي ولا دونا

    Take what fortunes you are granted

    Say not my will too high or low

  17. يعنى بذا دون هذا مع تماثله

    وقسْ على ما تراه السين والشينا

    One means less than another, though equal

    Judge by what you see of the seen and unseen

  18. همنا فإن يسلُ عن أسداء أنعمه

    كفّ الفلان فإنَّ الدهر يسلينا

    Our concern - should ease from boons cease

    May Fortune console us then

  19. لله درّ فلان الدِّين من رجلٍ

    يسرّ دنيا ويرضى بالتقى دينا

    God bless So-and-so of faith

    Who contents the world and religion alike

  20. فتى يضاعف أثمان الرجاء لمن

    سعى له ويراه بعدُ مغبونا

    A man who doubles hope's reward for one

    Who strives, yet sees himself robbed

  21. جذلان تحذف جمع المال راحته

    حذف الإضافة في الأسماء تنوينا

    Wealth's plenty makes Flan forget grammatical rules

    As genitive links make words decline

  22. نستمنح المال مكيولاً بأنعمه

    وننظم القول في علياه موزونا

    We seek tied wealth through his boons

    And rhymed words his heights adorn

  23. ويصبح المدح إلاَّ في مناقبه

    كالبكر زوَّجها الأهلون عنينا

    Praise dwells only in his traits

    As girls wed by kin against their will

  24. نعم الملاذ بجاهٍ أو نوال يدٍ

    في حادثِ الدهر يحمينا ويروينا

    What refuge in might or gift of hand

    In fate's events to guard and sustain us

  25. كادت عطاياه أن تبقى معطلة

    لأن نائلها لم يبق مسكينا

    His gifts almost stayed unmet

    For none being poor remained to take them

  26. وكادَ من لطف ألفاظٍ محررةٍ

    يردّ سائله المفتنّ مفتونا

    And from gentle, eloquent words

    His tempted asker left enchanted

  27. يا جائل الطرف في السادات قف بحمى

    من ليس يحتاج تعريفاً وتبيينا

    O roving-eyed one, stand guard for the nobles' protection

    One who needs no introduction or exegesis

  28. لسنا نسميه إجلالاً وتكرمةً

    وقدره المعتلي عن ذاك يغنينا

    Not in reverence or honor name we him

    For his lofty state makes that needless for us

  29. شمه تجد حاجباً من نور طلعته

    لكنه لم يزل بالنجحِ مقرونا

    Scent him - you will find brows of light

    Though always crowned with success

  30. وآمراً بنوال القاصدين فما

    يزال فيهم رشيد الرأي مأمونا

    Commanding boons for visitors - thus he remains

    Wise of counsel and trusted among them

  31. تريك أقلامه في بحر راحته

    فلكاً بما ينفع الآمال مشحونا

    You see his pens in the sea of ease

    Like ships laden with hope's benefits

  32. كأنَّها وهيَ بالألفاظِ مطربةٌ

    قضبٌ تجيد عليها الوُرق تلحينا

    As if they, though in words enchanting

    Reeds on which leaves sing their tune

  33. في كفّ أبلج يلقى الجود مفترضاً

    لدى علاه وحدّ العزم مسنونا

    In a snow-white palm generosity's duty he meets

    For his Heights, judgment's zeal focused

  34. له نجومٌ من الآراء نعرفها

    بصحة السعد لا حدساً وتخمينا

    Stars of thought we recognize through

    The fortune of auspiciousness, no guesswork

  35. وفكرة ذات ألفاظ منوّرة

    يكاد سامعها يجني البساتينا

    An idea in illuminated words

    Its hearer nearly reaps orchards

  36. من مبلغ العرب عن شعري ودولته

    إنَّ ابن عبَّاد باقٍ وان زيدونا

    Of eloquent Arabs' views on my poetry and reign

    Ibn Abbad remains though they forget us

  37. حبرتها فيها زهراء المعاطف من

    أغلى وأنفس ما يهدي المجيدونا

    In it the brilliant robes' flowers were dyed

    With the finest and dearest gifts the great present

  38. إذا رأيت قوافيها وطلعته

    فقد رأت مقلتاك البحر والنونا

    Seeing its rhymes and dawning

    Your eyes behold sea and noon alike

  39. كأن ألفاظها في سمع حدسِها

    كواكب الرجم يحرقن الشياطينا

    As if its words in hearing's senses

    Were stars of shooting burning devils

  40. يا ماجداً فاز بادينا وحاضرنا

    به وأنجح قاصينا ودانينا

    O glorious one who won past and present through him

    And successful, near and far

  41. إن كانَ يزداد شيءٌ بعد غايته

    فزادك الله في العلياءِ تمكينا

    If more can be added beyond the limit

    May God give you greater power
