  1. إذا ظفرت يوماً بقربكُم المنا

    فلست أبالي من تباعد أو دنا

    If I gain your nearness one day,

    I won't care if you're far or near.

  2. ولعت بعشقي فيكُم فتأكدت

    معانيه فاستولى فأصبح ديدنا

    I fell in love with you and realized

    Its meaning, so it became my way.

  3. ولما جنى طرفي رياض جمالكم

    جعلتم سهادي في عقوبة من جنى

    When my eyes enjoyed your beauty's garden,

    You made me sleep deprived for enjoying it.

  4. أجيراننا إن عفتم السفح منزلا

    وأخليتموا من جانب الجزع موطنا

    Neighbors, if you leave the plain untouched

    And empty the place of sadness,

  5. فقد حزتم دمعي عقيقاً ومهجتي

    غضاً وسكنتم من ضلوعيَ منحنى

    You have harvested my tears like gems

    And stilled the bend in my ribs,

  6. وأرسلتُم طيف الخيال لمقلةٍ

    إذا ما أتاها استصحب السهد ضيفنا

    Sending an imaginary form to her eyelids,

    So that sleep joins her as a guest.

  7. وكم فيكُم يوم الوداع لشقوتي

    هلالٌ سما غصنٌ زها رشأٌ رنا

    On the day of farewell, how much woe for me

    In you - a crescent that rose, a bending branch, a gazelle that glanced.

  8. إذا شمت تحت الحاجبين جفونه

    أرى السحر منها قاب قوسين أو دنا

    If I smell beneath the eyelids a slumber,

    I see magic in it - two bow lengths or less.

  9. أما والذي لو شاء قصَّر بينكم

    فلم يتعب الطيف المردَّد بيننا

    By Him, if He wished, He would shorten the distance between us,

    So the hovering specter wouldn't tire between us.

  10. لقد خلقت للعشق فيكم جوانحي

    كما خلق الملك المؤيد للثنا

    He created in you my wings for love

    As He created the victorious king for glory.

  11. مليكٌ له في العلم والجود همةٌ

    ترى المال في الإقتار والعيش في العنا

    A king whose ambition in knowledge and generosity

    Sees money in destitution and life in toil.

  12. بنى رتباً قد أعرب المدح ذكرها

    فيا عجباً من معرَبٍ كيف يبتنى

    He built ranks which praise mentioned

    So strange for a builder - how does he build!

  13. وأولى الندى حتى اقتنى الحمد مخلصاً

    فأكرم بما أولى وأعظم بما اقتنى

    And he attained sincerity until he owned praise purely

    So he was generous with what he owned and greatest with what he attained.

  14. وجلى ثغور الأرض من قلح العدى

    ولم لا وقد جرَّ الأراك من القنا

    And he cleared the land's borders of the enemy's insolence

    Why not, when he dragged spears from their sheaths.

  15. يكاد يعد النبل في حومة الوغى

    أقاحاً وأطراف الأسنة سوسنا

    You'd think he counted valor in the heat of battle

    As thorns, and spearheads as lilies.

  16. أخو فعلاتٍ تصرف الروع بائناً

    إلى كلماتٍ تنفث السحر بيننا

    A brother whose actions divert fear

    To words that breathe magic between us.

  17. لئن أجريت ذكرى المعادن إنني

    أرى أرضه للعلم والجود معدنا

    If I let flow memories of minerals, I see

    His land as a mine for knowledge and generosity.

  18. خليليَّ هذا من حماةٍ محله

    فعوجا على الأرض التي تنبت الهنا

    My friend, his place is protected

    By supporters, in the land growing passion.

  19. فلا جلّقٌ بالسهم تمنع قاصداً

    ولا حلب الشهباء تلبس جوشنا

    No coats of mail can stop an intent arrow,

    No iron armor can don battle gear.

  20. غنيت بجدواه فأطربني السرى

    ولا عجبٌ أن يطرب المرء بالغنا

    I sang his virtues, so the nocturnal journey delighted me,

    No wonder that song delights a man.

  21. ولا عيب فيه غير أني قصدته

    فأنستنيَ الأيام أهلاً وموطنا

    No flaw in it, except that I visited him

    And days made me forget family and home.

  22. تعلمت أنواع الكلام برفده

    فأصبحت أعلا الناس شعراً وأحسنا

    I learned all kinds of speech through him

    So I became highest in poetry and best in it.

  23. إذا قيل من ربّ المكارم في الورى

    أقلْ هو أو ربّ القريض أقلْ أنا

    If it's said "Who is most generous in the world?"

    Reply "He is" or say "I am".
