شغلَ القرائح بالدعاءِ الصالح

إشغالُ وقتك عن قريض المادح

Occupy your time with sincere prayers,

Rather than praising poets with idle words.

شغلاً وتدبيراً بمملكةٍ رأت

منك الجميلَ فأعرضت عن طامح

Keep yourself busy serving a kingdom that

Saw your goodness, yet spurned the grasping hands.

لا طعنَ في قلم شرعتَ بدولةٍ

إن كانَ يطعنُ في السماك الرَّامح

Do not blame the pen if it denounces

A gluttonous king who wrongs the innocent.

يا صاحب الدعوات والبركات أيّ

مدائح تولي وأيّ قرائح

O you whose prayers and blessings are sought,

What praises or poems can measure your worth?

يا موثراً كتمَ الهباتِ وكتمها

كالمسك لا يزدادُ غيرَ نوافح

O you who hides your gifts, like musk

That only grows more fragrant when crushed.

الله يعلمُ ما تكنّ من الدعا

والحمد عجز أو مخافة كاشح

God knows the sincerity of your prayers,

While our praise falls short, bound by awe.

أقسمت يا موسى الزمانِ لقد وفا

بالصدقِ من أثنى عليك بصالح

By the truth of time, O Moses, I swear

Those who praised your virtues spoke right.
