لآلٍ في سلوكٍ قد جلاها

بنانك أم معانٍ في سطور

With eloquence in every line portrayed

Are thoughts sublime or grace in what is said?

وألفاظٌ بأفضالٍ توالت

علينا أم قلائد في نحور

A stream of words like favors granted us

Or pearls around the neck in order spread?

رعاكَ الله من بحرٍ أجادت

بديهةُ فكرِهِ نظمَ البحور

May God protect you in the sea profound

Where genius fashions verse like one who’s led.

وصدرٍ تقبل الكلمات منه

فتجلسها المسامع في الصدور

A breast that harbors words and lets them dwell

Till ears absorb them and hearts keep them fed.

لقد رقت وقد راقت لسمعي

نظائر منه كالروض النضير

How fine the lines that meet my ears; how choice

The counterparts that please like meadows fresh.

وشيَّد لي بيوتاً من جمانٍ

إذا شيدت بيوتٌ من صخور

With gems he builds for me a house of words

When others build with stone that's rough and crude.

مشى الأدباء في طرق المعاني

به وبلفظه فمشوْا بنور

The masters of our art pursue with him

Ideas and terms; they walk in light renewed.
