1. أذكى سنا البرقِ في أحشائهِ لهبا

    وجاذبتهُ يدُ الأشواقِ فانجذبا

    The lightning flashed its brightest in his core,

    And longing's hand pulled him till he was sore,

  2. واستخرجَ الحبَّ كنزاً من محاجرهِ

    فقامَ يبكي على أحبابهِ ذهبا

    Love he drew as treasure from his veins' mines,

    Weeping o’er his loved ones turned to golden ore.

  3. صبٌّ يرى شرعةً في الحبِّ واضحةً

    فما يُبالي إذا قالَ الوشاةُ صبا

    A downpour seeing passion’s path clearly etched,

    Cares not if slanderers call him wild and unbridled.

  4. نحا الهوَى فكرَهُ العاني فصيَّرهُ

    بعامل القدِّ لا ينفكُّ منتصبا

    Passion inclined his weary mind till it was shaped

    By the hands of fate - erect, unbending, idle.

  5. مقسم الدمعِ والأهواءِ تحسبه

    بينَ الصدودِ وبين النأي منتهبا

    Dividing tears and passions they think him torn

    Between aloofness and plunder now feeble.

  6. ذو وجنةٍ بمجاري الدَّمعِ قد قرحتْ

    وخاطر بجناحِ الشوقِ قد وجبا

    With cheeks furrowed by tears’ streams that pained,

    And a heart roaming on longing's wings unstable.

  7. كأنَّ مهجتهُ ولَّتهُ فاتَّخذتْ

    سبيلها عنه في بحرِ البكى سربا

    As if his insides had left their place

    To wander in seas of tears as schools swim stable.

  8. يا ساريَ البرق في آفاق مصر لقدْ

    أذكرتني من زمان النيل ما عذُبا

    O lightning roaming Egypt's horizons, you

    Reminded me of Nile's past, gentle, subtle.

  9. حدِّث عن البحرِ أو دمعي ولا حرجٌ

    وانقل عن النارِ أو قلبي ولا كذِبا

    Talk of the sea, or my tears, no shame,

    And speak of the fire, or my heart, no fable.

  10. واندُب على الهرمِ الغربيّ لي عمراً

    فحبَّذا هرمٌ فارقته وصبا

    Mourn the western pyramid, my bygone youth,

    Blessed the pyramid I left no longer able.

  11. وقبِّل الأرضَ في بابِ العلاءِ فقدْ

    حكيتَ من أجلِ هذا الثغرَ والشنبا

    And kiss the earth at the Aula's door, for there

    You told the best tales, lyrical, florid, verbal.

  12. واهْتفْ بشكوايَ في ناديهِ إنَّ بهِ

    في المكرماتِ غريباً يرحمُ الغرَبا

    Cry out my complaint in his club, for in

    Kindness to strangers, none so noble, sacred.

  13. هذا الذي إن دعا الأقرانُ فكرتهُ

    قالت عزائِمهُ ليس العُلى لعبا

    His will, when peers invite, does not reckon

    The sublime as play, but purpose sacred.

  14. وفى الكتابةَ في علمٍ وفي عملٍ

    هذا وعارضهُ في الخدِّ ما كُتبا

    In knowledge's work, and practice, none reproached

    Except what pens wrote on his cheek - these words.

  15. وجانست فضلَ مرباهُ فضائلهُ

    فراحَ في حالتيهِ يتقن الأدبَا

    His mentors' virtues mingled with his own,

    In manners he perfected gentle, lauded.

  16. ذو البيت إن حدَّثت عنه العلى خبراً

    جاءتْ بإسنادِها عنه أباً فأبا

    When the sublime of his house is told in tales,

    His fathers, relayed in sequence, applauded.

  17. بيتٌ أفاعيلهُ في الفضلِ وازنةٌ

    فما تراهُ غداةَ المدحِ مضطرِبا

    A home whose pillars in virtue equal,

    Never wavering in praise, modest.

  18. لذَّتْ مناسبه في لفظِ ممتدحٍ

    حتَّى حسبنا نسيباً ذلك النسبا

    His match in an ode's words so suited him,

    We deemed that lineage his, mistaken.

  19. وطالع الفكر من أنبائه سيراً

    فما رأى غيرَ أبناءٍ من النجبا

    Thought gleaned his annals and found naught

    But noble scions, pure, unshaken.

  20. يقفو أخٌ في المعالي والعلومِ أخاً

    فبطلع الكلُّ في آفاقها شهبا

    Brothers vie in merits and knowledge alike,

    All rise in horizons radiant tokens.

  21. من كلِّ ذي قلمٍ أمست مضارِبهُ

    سيفاً لدولةِ ملكٍ يدفعُ النوبا

    All writers' tents became for a kingly state

    Swords dispelling harm, defenses unbroken.

  22. أما ترى بعليٍّ مصر فارحةً

    فلا عليًّا فقدناه ولا حَلبا

    Do you not see Egypt joyous with a Ba'ali,

    Now we've lost both Ali and Aleppo.

  23. مهدِي المقالَ لأسماع الورَى دررا

    وممطر الجودِ في أيديهمو ذهبا

    Guide for speech's ears, pearls he pours,

    And rain of bounty, hands gold bespoken.

  24. يصبو إذا نطقَ الصابي ويرمُقه

    طرفُ ابن مقلةَ بالإجلال إن كتبا

    He smiles when a child recites, and looks

    At Ibn Muqla's son with reverence unjoking.

  25. لم أنسَ لم أنسَ من إنشائِهِ سُحباً

    بآية النظم يتلو قبلها سحبا

    I forget not, from his works clouds recalled

    By verses preceding, rainclouds a token.

  26. مرتّ بلفظِ فتيِّ الرُّومِ قائلةً

    ما تطلب الرُّوم ممنْ أعجزَ العربا

    Passing by a Roman girl's words asking:

    What do Romans want with those who mastered Arabic?

  27. لو أنَّ فحلَ كليب شامَ بارقها

    أمسى يلفُّ على خيشومه الذنبا

    Had Kulaib's stud seen her lightning,

    He'd wrap his tail round his nose ashamed.

  28. تلكَ الَّتي بلغت في الحسنِ غايتهُ

    ولم تدعْ لنفيس بعدها رتبا

    She who reached the height of beauty,

    Leaving nobles after her no rank.

  29. حتَّى اغْتدى الدُّرُّ في أسلاكه صدفاً

    والمندل الرطب في أوطانِهِ حطبا

    Pearls made necklaces look like shells,

    And wet kindling in its land looked burnt and charred.

  30. وطارحتْني وشيبي شاغلٌ أذني

    أبعدَ خمسينَ مني تبتغي الأدبا

    She discarded me and my white hair, busy,

    Seeking erudition after my fifties embarked.

  31. يا سيدَّ سرَّني مسراهُ في نهجٍ

    لنْ يستطيعَ له ذو فكرةٍ طلبا

    O master, your path pleased me, none able

    To seek it, however thoughtful and wise.

  32. هذي بديهتكَ الحسناء ما تركتْ

    للسحر والنحلِ لا ضرْباً ولا ضرَبا

    This, your beautiful improvisation left

    No room for magic, bees, composition or enterprise.

  33. متى أشافه هذا اللفظَ من كتبٍ

    تملى فامْلأ من أوصافِهِ الكتبا

    When will I meet this eloquence in books

    To fill tomes with its qualities precise?

  34. شكراً لأقلامك اللاَّتي جرت لمدىً

    في الفضلِ أبقي لباغِي شأوهُ التعبا

    Thanks to your pens that flowed long

    In virtue - may my reach of it not tire.

  35. حلَّتْ وأطربتْ المصغي وحزت بها

    فضل السباق فسمَّاها الورَى قصبا

    They came and pleased the hearer, were inspired,

    Won the race's merit - so people admired.
