1. أما وتلفّت الرَّشاء الغرير

    ولين معاطف الغصن النضير

    When the twigs were adorned with dewdrops,

    And the branches softly swayed,

  2. لقد عبثت لواحظه بعقلي

    فيا ويل الصحيح من الكسير

    His alluring glances stirred my soul -

    Woe to the sane among the broken ones!

  3. غزالٌ كالغزالة في سناها

    تحجبه الملاحة بالستور

    A gazelle with the beauty of a doe,

    Veiled by bashfulness with a curtain.

  4. شديد الظلم حلّ صميم قلبي

    كذاك الظلم يوقع في الأسير

    His oppression pierced my heart -

    Thus oppression wounds the captive.

  5. تبسم ثم حدّث بالّلآلي

    فأعجزَ بالنظيم وبالنثير

    He smiled, then spoke with charm,

    Leaving me speechless and stupefied.

  6. وأسكر لحظه من غير ذوقٍ

    فيالله من لحظٍ سحور

    His glance intoxicated without tasting -

    What an enchanting glance that was!

  7. وأجفانٌ مؤنثةٌ ولكن

    تقابلنا بأسيافٍ ذكور

    With feminine eyelids, yet

    They confronted me with masculine swords.

  8. وخدّ لاح فيه خيال دمعي

    فقل في الرَّوض والماءِ النهير

    On his cheek shined the image of my tears -

    Tell this in the garden by the flowing stream.

  9. شجاني منه أمرد ما شجاني

    وثنى بالعذار فمن عذيري

    His affection hurt me, though I know not why,

    And he bent the boughs, so who is to blame?

  10. ومن لي فيه من ليلٍ طويل

    أكابده ومن جفنٍ قصير

    In this long night of mine, who do I have

    To endure it, with my short slumber?

  11. لحى الله الوشاة فإن تدانو

    ولحّ الظبي عنَّا في النفور

    May God curse the slanderers, for if they come close,

    The gazelle distances itself in alienation.

  12. وعزّ لقاؤنا والربع دانٍ

    كما أبصرت تفليج الثغور

    And may our meeting be honoured while the land lies low,

    As you saw the opening of the frontiers.

  13. فرُبَّ دجىً لنا فيه عناقٌ

    تغوص به القلائد في النحور

    Many a dark night we had intimate embraces,

    With necklaces plunging into bosoms.

  14. زمانُ العيش مبتسمُ الثنايا

    ووجهُ الأنس وضَّاح السرور

    The days of life have smiling cheeks,

    And the face of company is joyful and delighted.

  15. ووصلُ معذِّبي جناتُ عدنٍ

    لباسي فيه ضمٌّ كالحرير

    My union with the one torturing me is the Garden of Eden,

    My garment in it is a soft silk.

  16. تروم يداي في خصريه مسرًى

    ولكن ضاق فترٌ عن مسير

    My hands intend intimacy around his waist,

    But the opportunity is too short for travel.

  17. وتعي الكفّ عن كشحٍ هضيمٍ

    فأرفعها إلى رِدفٍ وثير

    They refrain from a shameful stinginess,

    So I raise them to a generous plenty.

  18. وأستر ثغره باللثمِ خوفاً

    على ليلي من الصبح المنير

    And I conceal his mouth with a kiss, fearing

    For my night from the shining dawn.

  19. سقى صوب الحيا تلك الليالي

    وإن عوضتُ بالدمعِ الغزير

    Those nights gave drink to the throat of life,

    Though I compensated with copious tears.

  20. وحيى منزل اللّذات عنا

    وإن لم يمس منا بالعمير

    The abode of bliss has distanced itself from us,

    Though not touched by the short-lived.

  21. وبدراً فائزاً بالحسنِ يحثو

    تراب السبق في وجه البدور

    A rising full moon, excelling in beauty,

    Spurring the steed of superiority amid the full moons.

  22. يلذّ تغزّلُ الأشعار فيه

    لذاذة مدحها في ابن الأثير

    Poetry loves to flirt with him -

    The delight of praising the son of the well-versed.

  23. أغرّ إذا اجتنى وحبا العطايا

    رأيت السيل يدفع من ثبير

    He is most generous when intimate and loving gifts -

    I saw the torrent pouring forth from the clouds.

  24. أخو يومين يوم ندًى ضحوكٍ

    ويوم ردًى عبوسٍ قمطرير

    A brother to two days - a day of smiling joy,

    And a day of frowning gloom.

  25. يصوّب مقلتي كرمٍ وبأسٍ

    فيقلع عن فقيد أو عقير

    He aims his glances with generosity and might,

    Uprooting one lost or transgressing.

  26. كذلك المجد ليس يتم إلا

    بمزج العُرف فيه والنكير

    Thus glory is not complete

    Except by blending dignity with condemnation.

  27. رأيت عليّ كابن عليّ قدماً

    وزيراً جلَّ عن لقب الوزير

    I saw Ali like the son of Ali preceding -

    A minister, elevated above the title of minister.

  28. يسائله عن التمهيد ملكٌ

    فيسأل جدّ مطّلعٍ خبير

    A king questions him about introduction,

    So he asks a wise elder who is well-informed.

  29. ويبعث كتبه في كلّ روعٍ

    كتائب نقعها شكل السطور

    He sends his letters in every thought -

    Battalions whose lines are shaped like curves,

  30. فمن دالٍ ومن ألفٍ وميمٍ

    كقوسٍ أو كسهمٍ أو قتير

    Or bows, or arrows, or spears -

    Of dāl, alif, and mīm.

  31. كأن طروسه بين الأعادي

    نذيرُ الشيب بالأجل المبير

    As if his countenances amidst the enemies

    Are a warning of old age with impending death.

  32. كأنَّ حديثه في كلِّ نادٍ

    حديث النار عن نفسِ العبير

    As if his talk in every assembly

    Is the talk of fire about kindling wood.

  33. يظلّ السائدون لدى حماه

    سدًى يستأذنون على الحضور

    The leaders remain in his protection,

    Seeking permission for attendance like commoners.

  34. مثولاً مع ذوي الحاجات منّا

    فما يُدرى الغنيّ من الفقير

    Meeting with people of requests,

    The rich indistinguishable from the poor.

  35. إلى أن يرفعَ الأستارَ وجهٌ

    تراه من المهابة في ستور

    Until a face lifts the curtains,

    Appearing solemn and veiled.

  36. فمن رفدٍ يفيئ لمستميحٍ

    ومن رأيٍ يضيئ لمستنير

    Bestowing upon the petitioner,

    Enlightening the enlightened.

  37. ومن حقٍّ يساقُ إلى حقيق

    ومن جدوى تفاض على جدير

    Leading the right to the truthful,

    And benefit to the deserving.

  38. سجية سابق الطلبات سامٍ

    يظلّ على معاركة الأمور

    Of noble temperament, surpassing requests,

    Shaded as if the man were on the verge.

  39. ذكيرٌ لا ينقّب عن حلاه

    تلقى المجد عن سلفٍ ذكير

    Retreating without gain after effort,

    Save the cry of an angry lion.

  40. فإن تحجب فلهجة كلّ راوٍ

    وإن تظهر فنصب يد المشير

    Speaking of his ascent, an arrogant nose

    Follows what it speaks with sniffing.

  41. كذا فليحوها قصب المعالي

    سبوقٌ جاء في الزَّمن الأخير

    How can the goal of one so high

    Be attained when sights recoil like glances?

  42. بعيد القدر من آمال باغٍ

    قريب البرّ من يد مستمير

    He is thanked here and there,

    And his excuses sprout like clover.

  43. يهاب سبيل مسعاه المجاري

    كأنَّ الرَّجل منه على شفير

    Noble virtues not denying requests,

    As morning gleamed for the seeker.

  44. ويرجع بعد جهدٍ عن مداه

    بلا حظٍّ خلا نفس نهير

    Had the one making similes wished, he would have said

    As fast as them in producing ideas.

  45. يحدّث عن علاه رغيم أنفٍ

    فيتبع ما يحدّث بالزفير

    He has a pen of hidden benefit and continuous flow

    That spends the night watchful over kingdoms.

  46. وكيف ترام غاية ذي علاءٍ

    يردّ الطرف منها كالحسير

    He learned in youth the traits of a lion,

    Even in its roar.

  47. سميّ الشكر من هنّا وهنّا

    ونبت عذراه مثل الشكير

    Have you not seen him when matters interfered

    And the steed intended, he declared with neighing?

  48. مكارم لا تمنّع عن طلوبٍ

    كما لمع الصباح لمستنير

    Ink was the garb of a night upon him,

    So he unveiled a shining brilliant morning.

  49. فلو شاء المشبه قال سحراً

    بسرعتها لإخراج الضمير

    And composed in volumes the Garden of Eden,

    So his volumes contained the drinking of wines.

  50. له قلمٌ سريُّ النفع سار

    يبيت على الممالك كالخفير

    He neighbored the sweet life until

    He dripped from it like ample dripping.

  51. تعلّم وهو في الأجمات نبتٌ

    سجايا الأسد حتى في الزئير

    His wisdom ruled with the insight of a sage,

    A watchful seer with medicines of ascension.

  52. ألم تره إذا اعترضت أمورٌ

    ورام الفرس أعلن بالصرير

    Of those who have an ascent

    To the heights, swifter than the revolving sphere.

  53. ولثّمه المداد لثامَ ليلٍ

    فأسفر عن سنا صبحٍ منير

    People sleep in peace and awake

    To find him battling the evils of time.

  54. وأنشأ في الطروس جنان عدنٍ

    فحلّ بطرسهِ شرب الخمور

    In them are hearts concealing secrets for God -

    Thus secrets are entrusted to hearts.

  55. وجاوره الحيا المنهلّ حتى

    تصبّب منه كالعرَق الدزير

    Their dreams have settled, and their delights have spread,

    So he honored them with mountains and rocks.

  56. تصرَّف حكمه بمنى حكيمٍ

    بأدواء العلى يقظٍ بصير

    I have gentle speech, substantial as

    The flow of fresh water from the rocks.

  57. من القوم الذين لهم صعودٌ

    إلى العلياءِ أسرع من حدور

    My poetry ascended to their heights,

    So we titled it the sphere of influence.

  58. تبيتُ الناسُ في سلمٍ وتمسي

    تحارب عنهم كرّ العصور

    The finest composition is a delicate verse

    Woven into great verses.

  59. صدورٌ فيهمُ لله سرٌ

    كذا الأسرار تودع في الصدور

    Most brilliant and beneficial of the worlds,

    Bestower of well-being in the difficult times.

  60. رست أحلامهم وسرت لهاهمُ

    فأكرم بالجبالِ وبالصخور

    Our excuse in you has for ages increased affection

    For your distinction over the ages.

  61. ولي لفظٌ رقيق الوِرد جزل

    كما نبع الزّلالُ من الصخور

    If the weak attributes a sin to him,

    Your generosity comes with pardoning favor.

  62. سما شعري وعاد على علاهم

    فلقّبناه بالفلك الأثير

    The state of the sovereign sprouted branches,

    So by your auspices you were its sharpest arrow.

  63. وأحسن ما سرى بيت لطيف

    يصاغ ثناه في بيتٍ كبير

    You protected its porch and built within it,

    By your influence, each line like a wall.

  64. أأندى العالمين ندًى وأجدى

    على العافين في الزمن العسير

    You settled Al-Basīṭah from commotion,

    No branch shaking in the grove.

  65. عذرنا فيك دهراً زادَ حبًّا

    لما ميزْت منه على الدهور

    Nothing made you helpless in days

    That you attempted, save the sight of an equal.

  66. إذا أحصى الضعيف عليه ذنباً

    أتت يمناك بالكرم الغفور

    You are fortified by an evident argument, sweet

    To remember over the course of time.

  67. ودولة مالكٍ نثلت جفيراً

    فكنت أشدّ سهمٍ في الجفير

    You have reaped every withered life,

    Leaves fleeing before the hawks.

  68. حميت رواقها وبنيت فيها

    بيمنك كلّ سطرٍ مثل سور

    As if the earth were ruled by a sky

    Illuminated with crescents and full moons.

  69. وسكّنت البسيطةَ من هياجٍ

    فما يهتزّ فرعٌ في دَبور

    Travel folded the plains with ease -

    Excellent provision for the Day of Resurrection!

  70. ولمْ يعجزْك في الأيام شيءٌ

    تحاوله سوى مرأًى نضير

    The sands of Mecca will say when you arrive,

    What a large delegation this is!

  71. لتهنك حجةٌ غرّاء يحلو

    تذكرها على مرّ الدّهور

    Are you not the best of riders of steeds

    And highest of newcomers in brilliance?

  72. جنيتم كلّ ضامرةٍ لعيش

    فرار الورق قدّام الصقور

    In it contentment revolves around you

    Like your circulation around the Sacred House.

  73. كأنَّ الأرض تحتكمُ سماءٌ

    تجلّت بالأهلة والبدور

    And a fragrance diffuses among you at the ritual,

    As if musk were some of the sacrificial blood.

  74. سُرىً تطوى به الفلوات طياًّ

    ونعم الذَّخر في يوم النشور

    The torrents of provision remain in the Hejaz,

    Never rushing to a rainy place of shelter.

  75. تقولُ بطاحُ مكةَ يوم لحتم

    ألا لله من وفدٍ جهير

    When you honour human efforts, you spur

    To give abundantly in gathering rewards.

  76. ألستم خير من ركب المطايا

    وأعلا القادمين سنا نور

    So glad tidings to Egypt and its inhabitants!

    Your journey towards it is the best outcome.

  77. يطوف عليكم الرّضوان فيها

    طوافكُم على البيتِ الطهور

    Your promise in the sky of governance is a full moon

    Branching out from the rising of celestial spheres.

  78. ويعبق بينكم في النحر عرفٌ

    كأنَّ المسك بعضُ دم النحير

    An eye for the times, manifesting expert opinion,

    Which makes the corners of the frontiers smile.

  79. وتمكث بالحجاز سيولُ رفدٍ

    فما تهفو إلى نوءٍ مطير

    I prolonged praising him, while finding in him

    Generosity unparalleled by any equal.

  80. إذا كرمت مساعي المرءِ حثت

    لبذل الوفر في جمع الأجور

    I stood by his status complaining of the nights,

    As the subjects complain to the prince.

  81. فيا بشرى لمصرَ وساكنيها

    مصيرك نحوها أزكى مصير

    I wonder how I thirst when around clouds,

    While the majestic encompasses the lowly.

  82. وعودك في سما التدبير بدراً

    يفرّع من ركوب هلال كور

    How can his shadows accommodate the wilds

    When I stand amid the desolate ruins?

  83. وعيناً للزمان تجيل رأياً

    تبسم عنه أرجاء الثغور

    There is no dew in the clouds like his hands,

    No gratitude in the land like me.

  84. أطلتُ مديحه وأجدتّ فيه

    وما حابيته وَزْن النقير

    May God protect your home - the complaint of a servant

    Clinging to you for equitable justice.

  85. وقمت بجاهه أشكو الليالي

    كما تشكو الرّعية للأمير

    The like of you has rescued the ally of a house,

    Reviving some inhabitants of graves.

  86. وأعجب كيف أظمأ من غمامٍ

    وقد شمل الجليل مع الحقير

    Do not consider my right, but rather

    What is in you of generosity and goodness.

  87. وكيف ظلاله تسعُ البرايا

    وشخصي قائمٌ وسطَ الهجير

    I have come to you devoid of any skill -

    So allow me, O Kaʿbah, refuge!

  88. وما في السحب مثل ندى يديه

    ولا في الأرض مثليَ من شكور

    And gather in your era every age

    As the year gathers its months.

  89. رعاك الله دارِكْ شكوَ عبدٍ

    تمسّك منك بالعدل السفير

  90. فمثلك من أغاث حليف بيتٍ

    فأحيى بعضَ سكانِ القبور

  91. ولا تنظرْ إلى حقي ولكنْ

    إلى ما فيك من كرمٍ وخير

  92. أتيتك محرماً من كل صنعٍ

    فدُمْ يا كعبةً للمستجير

  93. وجمعْ في زمانك كلّ عصرٍ

    كجمع العام أفراد الشهور
