1. حمدت دموعي إذ وفت بوعودِها

    فكأنَّ ما في مقلتي في جيدها

    My tears have kept their promise,

    As if what's in my eyelids is on its cheeks.

  2. وتأوَّدتْ تدعو للذَّة ضمِّها

    ما دامت الرَّقباء طوعَ هجودها

    It yearned and called for the sweetness of its embrace

    As long as the gazelles obeyed its beckoning.

  3. وهممت فامْتنعت عليَّ نهودها

    واحسرتا حتَّى رقيب نهودها

    It intended, but denied itself to me

    And I regretted until the gazelle of its denial.

  4. سمراء تطعن بالقوام ورُبَّما

    نظرت فصالت بيضها مع سودها

    A brunette who mocks with her figure, and sometimes

    Glances, so her whiteness mixes with her darkness.

  5. وقفت عليها لوْعتي وصبابتي

    ومدامعِي تجري على معهودها

    I stood before her, with my love and my youth,

    And my tears flowing as they always have.

  6. لم يبقَ في زمن الوزير بقيةٌ

    في الظلمِ إلاَّ ظلمها لعميدها

    No injustice remains in the time of the minister

    Except her injustice to her beloved.

  7. هذا وقد أصبحتُ في أبوابهِ

    أدعى وأحسب من عديد عبيدها

    And now I come to his doors

    Pretending, and counting myself among his many slaves,

  8. لا غَرْوَ إن نفحت مدائحُ ناظمٍ

    والخضرُ سارٍ في خلال نشيدها

    No wonder, if the praises of a composer blow

    While the green one walks among its melodies,

  9. ذو همَّةٍ رأت المكارم في الورى

    ضيعاً فأعْجبها افتراع نجودها

    One with lofty ambition, who saw generosity in people

    Lacking, so was pleased to make it flourish.

  10. ومواهب مثل السحائب برّة

    يوم الندى لقريبها وبعيدها

    And gifts like heavy rains

    On a dewy day, for both neighbor and stranger.

  11. ومنازل ما بين كفِّك والغنى

    يا مشتكي الإقتار غير ورودها

    And dwellings between your palm and wealth

    O you who complain of poverty, other than its roses.

  12. يتواضع العلماءُ فيها هيبةً

    لأعزّ ممدوح الفعال سديدها

    The scholars are humble before it

    Out of reverence for the most praised of effective men.

  13. ومبشّر بالقاصدين كأنه

    وأبيك قاصدها وطالب جودها

    And heralding those who visit, as if he

    Were visiting it and seeking its bounty.

  14. يلقى العدى وذوي المقاصد والنهى

    بمميتها ومغيثها ومفيدها

    He meets enemies and those of purpose and prohibition

    With its death, its life, and its benefit.

  15. يا بهجةَ العليا ونسر صيفها

    وملاذ عاديها وغيظ حسودها

    O joy of the exalted, hawk of its summer,

    And refuge of its people, and anger of its envious,

  16. أما نفوس عداك من غيظٍ فقدْ

    كادتْ تكون جسومها كلحودها

    The souls of others nearly die of envy

    Their bodies shrivel like parchment.

  17. فافْخر بنفسك إنَّها النفس التي

    كملت فما تبغي سوى تأبيدها

    So boast of yourself, for it is the only soul

    Perfect, seeking only eternity.

  18. وتهنّ بالأعوام نزعُ خليقها

    مستأنف النعمى ولبس جديدها

    It scorns the passing years, the fading of its form,

    Renewing blessings and wearing a new cloak,

  19. تجلى أهلتها إليكَ محبةً

    فكأنها أهوت لشكر سجودها

    Its readiness has inclined it to you in love,

    As if it fell in gratitude prostrate before you.

  20. ولقد قصْدتكَ شاكياً حرّ الظما

    فكرعتُ في عذبِ الصلات بِرودها

    And I came to you complaining of the heat of thirst,

    So I drank from the sweetness of its cool salvation.

  21. وتقلدتْ عنقي عطاياك التي

    حكّمت في الأيام عن تقليدها

    And your gifts have adorned my neck, those which

    Have ruled the days, never discarded.

  22. فلأسْمعنَّك ما ترنمَ صادح

    مدحاً يصغّر ماضيات وليدها

    So let me hear you chanting loudly

    A praise that diminishes all past newborns.

  23. لا ينبغي حرّ المقال فريده

    إلاَّ على حرّ الكرام فريدها

    No heated speech befits the unique

    Except regarding the uniquely generous.
