يحير الغصن بين اللّين والهيف

ويفضح الظبي بعد الجيد والعطف

The branch wavers between softness and roughness

And the gazelle exposes itself after coyness and kindness

أغنّ لم يبقَ مرأى حسنه بشراً

خال من الوجدِ يلحاني على شغفي

Sing! There is no longer a sight of his beauty among people

Empty of passion he importunes me for my fervor

يا حبَّذا البدر حاز التمّ أجمعه

وزاد في مهج العشَّاق بالكلف

Oh how excellent is the full moon having gained perfection

And increased in the hearts of lovers with burdens

غزال رملٍ ولكن غير ملتفتٍ

وغصنُ بانٍ ولكن غير منعطف

A gazelle of the sand yet inattentive

And a flexing branch yet unbending

يشكو السقامَ إلى أجفانه جسدي

فأعجب له دَنفاً يشكو إلى دنف

My body complains of sickness to its eyelids

So I wonder at it complaining to eyelids about eyelids

متى يحقِّق وعداً من تواصله

والمنع ينظر من وجهٍ إليَّ خفي

When will he fulfill a promise of communication

While prohibition looks from a hidden face at me

في الخدِّ لامٌ وفي عطف الصبا ألف

وآلة المنع بين اللاّم والألف

In the cheek a hint and in the kindness of morning familiarity

And the implement of prohibition between hinting and familiarity

هلاّ سوى سحر ألفاظ تلقت به

فكان في قصد موسى مانعٌ تلفي

Why did it counter with nothing but the sorcery of words it received

Thus there was in the aim of Moses a preventing evasion

مشير ملكٍ تجلَّى رأيه فسطا

بالخصبِ يطو بياض الصبح في السدف

An indicating king whose opinion emerged prescribing

With fertility the whiteness of dawn blankets the saddlebags

فاقَ البريَّة في عدلٍ ومعرفةٍ

فليسَ عن رتب العليا بمنصرف

He surpassed the desert in justice and wisdom

Thus he is not turned from the highest ranks

سجية في اقتضاء الحمد ناشئةٌ

على الندى والسدى والمجد والشرف

A nature in requiring praise arising

Upon dew, happiness, glory, and honor

وهمَّة دبَّر الإسلام كافلها

تدبير متّصف بالحقِّ منتصف

And the resolve that ensured the wellbeing of Islam

A resolution characterized by truth, balanced

يا جائل الطرف في السادات منتقداً

ها قد وصلت إلى أزكاهُم فقف

Oh glance roving among the elite appraising

And you have found the meanings of virtue manifest

وقد وجدت معاني الفضل باهرةً

فإن قدرت على أوصافها فصف

So if you can describe them, then describe

The abode of praise upon the pole in whom the minds converged

دار الثناء على القطب الذي اتّفقت

فيه العقول فلا قول بمختلف

With no differing sayings

Do not seek a station of superiority after his station

لا تبغِ منزلَ فضلٍ بعد منزلهِ

من حلّ طيبةَ لم يحتج إلى النجف

Whoever settles in Tayba has no need for Najaf

From a group of eminent ones whose glory

من معشرٍ نجبٍ ما زال مجدهمُ

يوصي به السلف الماضي إلى الخلف

The departed ancestors enjoin upon those to come

The Banu Khakan erected the sublimities and came together

شادَ المعالي بنو خاقان واجْتمعوا

في واحدٍ بمعاني البيت مكتنف

In one with the meanings of the house enveloped

His resolve advanced him over the elite

قد قدّمته على السادات همّته

في الفضلِ تقديم بسم الله في الصحف

Like beginning in the name of Allah in scripture

Sufficient for armies with warring strategies

كافي الجيوش بآراءٍ مناضلةٍ

تكاد ترعد منها أنفسُ النّطف

That nearly thunder from them the souls of the brave

No sin with one collapsed if you support

فلا جناحٌ بمنهاضٍ إذا عضدت

من جانبيه ولا قلبٌ بمرتجف

Him from both flanks, and no fainthearted heart

In his palm a pen like an upright sword

في كفِّه قلمٌ كالسيف منتصبٌ

لكنه لبني الآداب كالهدف

Yet for the learned it is like a target

Flowing with the palm of Suhaili the Sublime thus

جارٍ بكفِّ سهيليّ العلى فلذا

كم في المهمَّات من روضٍ له أنِف

How many glories in important matters for him refined

Contemplate his gifts and review his virtues

أمّل عطاياه وأستعرض فضائله

فما يردّ جناه كفّ مقتطف

For no palm gathers its yield like a picking palm

And smell with your eye in the world his beauties

وشمْ بعينك في الدنيا محاسنه

إذا دَلفت ودَعنا من أبي دُلف

When you enter and leave off from Abi Dulaf

They said, “Is it in his force or his leniency?”

قالوا أفي بأسه أم في سماحتِهِ

فقلتُ في ذا على رغم الحسود وفي

I said, “In this despite the envious and in this”

Oh you who bore at his doors blessings

يا من تحملت في أبوابه نعماً

لا عيبَ فيها سوى أن أثقلت كتفي

With no fault in them except they weighed down my shoulder

Be felicitous with the auspicious position its bird

تهنّ بالمنصب الميمون طائره

واقبل لدستِك يا موسى ولا تخف

And draw near to your hand oh Moses and do not fear

And forgive the crime of days for which I apologized

واغفر جنايةَ أيامٍ قد اعتذرت

وأبشر بسعدٍ على الأيام مؤتلف

And give glad tidings of fortune reconciled with days

God knows what you find him to be

الله يعلم فيما أنت واجده

ونور حظِّيَ من بشري ومن أسفي

And the light of my fortune from my cheer and my sorrow

For me in your honor an unfailing tower

لي في جنابك برجٌ غير منقلبٍ

إذا التجأت ونجمٌ غير منكسف

When I seek refuge and an undimmed star

For in your patronage my affirmation when the state

ففي وَلائك توكيدي إذا اختلفت

حالُ امرئٍ وإلى علياك منعطفي

Of a person differs, and to your heights the bend in my road

I swore you have no peer so I did not

حلفتُ أنَّك معدوم النظير فما

راجعت فكري وما اسْتثْنيت في حلفي

Reconsider my thought nor make exception in my oath
