1. ليلُ وصل معطرُ الأرجاء

    لاحَ فيه الصباحُ قبلَ المساء

    The night of reunion has fragrant breezes,

    In it the dawn shone before dusk.

  2. زارني من هويته باسمَ الثغ

    ر فجلى غياهبَ الظلماء

    I was visited by one whose identity was clouded,

    So he dispelled the darkness of gloom.

  3. ألتقيه ويحسبُ الهجرَ قلبي

    فكأنِّي ما نلتُ طيبَ اللقاء

    I met him while my heart reckoned estrangement,

    As if I had never tasted the sweetness of meeting.

  4. ربَّ عيش طهرٍ على ذلك الس

    فح غنمناهُ قبل يومِ التنائي

    O Lord, grant a life of purity on that plain,

    That we enjoyed before the day of parting.

  5. نقطعُ اليوم كالدجى في سكونٍ

    ودجاهُ كاليومِ في الأضواء

    Today we sever like the darkness in stillness,

    And its gloom like the day in illuminations.

  6. فكأنِّي بالأمن في ظل إسما

    عيلَ ربّ العلى وربّ الوفاء

    It's as if I'm secure in the shade of the name of the Exalted Lord,

    Lord of the Most High and Lord of loyalty.

  7. ملكٌ أنشرَ الثنا في زمانٍ

    نسي الناس فيه ذكر الثناء

    A just king who spread prosperity in an era,

    In which people forgot to mention praise.

  8. هاجرٌ حرفَ لا إذا سئل الجو

    دَ كهجران واصل للرَّاء

    An emigrant whose generosity, when asked,

    Was like the emigration of one who unites for ostentation.

  9. يسبقُ الوعدَ بالنوالِ فلا يح

    وِجُ قصَّادهُ إلى الشفعاء

    He precedes promise with bestowal, so he doesn't

    Need advocates to mediate for him.

  10. شاعَ بالكتمِ جودُ كفَّيه ذكراً

    فهو كالمسكِ فاح بالإخفاء

    The repute of his concealed munificence spread,

    So it's like musk diffusing in concealment.

  11. جاد حتَّى كادتْ عفاة حماهُ

    لا يذوقون لذَّةً للحباء

    He was so generous that the palms of his proteges

    Could barely taste the delight of life's comfort.

  12. كلَّما ظنَّ جودَهُ في انتهاء

    لائمٌ عادَ جودُهُ في ابتداء

    Whenever his generosity seemed to wane,

    A critic returned, his generosity renewed in inception.

  13. عذَلوهُ على النوالِ فأغروا

    فنداه نصبٌ على الإغراء

    They blamed him for bestowal, so they enticed,

    And he established ranks upon enticement.

  14. وحلا منّ بابه فسعت كالنَّ

    ملِ فيه طوائفُ الشعراء

    The gates of his abode opened, so—like ants—

    Hordes of poets flocked through them.

  15. شرفٌ في تواضع واحتمالٌ

    في اقتدارٍ وهيبةٌ في حياء

    Nobility in humility, endurance in capability,

    Awe in modesty, and grace in timidity.

  16. ربَّ وجناء ضامر تقطعُ البي

    دَ على أثرِ ضامر وجناء

    O Lord, a withering neighbor who severs hands

    In the tract of a withering neighbor.

  17. في قفارٍ يخافُ في أُفقها البر

    قُ سرًى فهو خافق الأحشاء

    In barrens where lightning fears the horizons,

    Flickering in intestines and kindling fervor.

  18. رتعتْ في حماك ثم استراحت

    من ألِيمَين الرحلِ والبيداء

    It relished your protection, then rested

    From the misery of travel and the desert.

  19. وظلامٌ كأن كيوان أعمى

    سائلٌ فيهِ عن عصا الجوزاء

    A darkness as if a blind whale

    Seeking in it the staff of the archer.

  20. ذَكرَ السائِلونَ ذكرَكَ فيهِ

    فسرَوْا بالأفكارِ في الأضواء

    Those who asked mentioned your name in it,

    So they roamed in thoughts amid the lights.

  21. وحروبٍ تجري السوابحُ منها

    في بحارٍ مسفوحةٍ من دماء

    And wars in which the swimmer flows

    In seas poured from blood.

  22. من ضراب تشبّ من وقعةِ النا

    رُ وتطفي حرارةُ الشحناء

    From clamor that sparks from the strike of fire

    And temperance extinguishes ardency.

  23. يئس الناسُ إذ تجلى فجلَّ

    يت دُجاها بالبأسِ والآراء

    People despaired when you appeared, so you

    Dispelled its darkness with might and opinions.

  24. فاجل عني حالاً أرانيَ منها

    كلَّ يومٍ في غارةٍ شعواء

    Remove me now from a state in which I see

    Every day in ferocious attack.

  25. فكفى من وضوحِ حاليَ أنِّي

    في زماني هذا من الأدباء

    It's enough that my condition's clarity is that

    In this time, I'm of the cultured.

  26. ضاع فيه لفظي الجهير وفضلي

    ضيعةَ السيفِ في يدٍ شلاَّء

    My loud voice and merit are lost—

    Like the sword gone astray in a withered hand.

  27. غير أنِّي على عماد المعالي

    قد بنيتُ الرجا أتمَّ بناء

    Except I've constructed hope on pillars of glory,

    Perfectly building reliance.

  28. ليتَ شعرِي من منك أولى بمثلِي

    يا فريدَ الأجوادِ والكرماء

    I wonder who of your court is worthier than me,

    O unique one of the generous and open-handed.

  29. دمتَ سامي المقامِ هامي العطايا

    قاهر البأس فارجَ الغماء

    You remain lofty in status, ambitious in grants,

    Vanquisher of evil, dispeller of sorrows.

  30. لمواليك ما ارْتجَى من بقاءٍ

    ولشانيك ما اخْتشَى من فناء

    For your loyalists, what they hope for in survival,

    And for your dignity, what they fear in demise.
