O sea, grant knowledge and hopes,

And O land, grant the hopefuls,

Whose palm is moistened by rain,

Whose breath is freshened by meadows.

See how a servant has become,

In state and rank, so low and mean,

Each dawn conspires for my murder,

Thus does God say: I am supreme.

And if I complain of cold to anyone,

They cover me in coarsest gown.

My bluish body and pale complexion

Have clad me in torment's garb.

What snow has made the land a view,

When it has aged my joints' cores?

Cotton sheds tears while it's just cotton,

So does a stranger when in need.

Strange that my body complains of cold

While my core complains of heat,

Increased by cold, if he sought warmth

We'd say: right he is, or a poet.

What afflicts me is far worse.

So give alms by sending some embers,

My coals are no more, and wax is scarce.

    Bring them, youth-like, to rejuvenate,

The cold has hardened them to ignite.

When winter grows fierce and rages,

It sends me its harshest, most fierce.

Quickly grant this wish, for my frail state

    Cannot endure further delay.

    The servant pens his handwriting,

Though not all that transpired can convey.
