1. لغرة الأفق بياضٌ شدَخ

    جسمي به من قبل شهري انسلخ

    The horizon's coquettishness is a dazzling whiteness

    My body shed its skin months ago

  2. ويلاهُ من ثلجٍ صميمٍ إذا

    تساكت الناسُ لديه صمخ

    Woe to the biting, stinging frost when

    People fall silent before it, stunned

  3. قامت به شعرةُ أجسامنا

    بزرقةٍ فالويل منها خوخ

    The hair on our bodies stood on end

    With blueness - oh the woe of it - bent

  4. كأنَّني محراكُ فرنٍ إذاً

    قالوا عجينُ الثلج في الأرضِ طخ

    As if I were a furnace poker

    They said the frost dough in the ground - mashed

  5. كم يبصق الثلج على لحيةٍ

    وكم يقول الرعد في الوجه إخّ

    How much does the frost spit on a beard

    And how much does thunder say in the face - Hush!

  6. كم تعقد الآفاقُ عقدَ اللّبا

    منه وكم ينثرُ نثرَ اللبخ

    How the horizons knot the knot of cowl

    Of it and how it scatters the sprinkling of crumbs

  7. كم بشر بالثلج لما غدا

    كالحجرِ المطروحِ قبل المسخّ

    How much it foretold snow when it came

    Like a discarded stone before petrification

  8. كم اثر نيران إذا ما رعى

    بالثلجِ يجري ماءَه قبل سخ

    How much the trace of fire when it grazes

    The snow, its water flowing before melting

  9. وحاولَ البربخ في الماءِ أن

    يحكي مجارِي رشحهِ فانْبرخ

    The flea in the water tried

    To tell the courses of its dripping - it burst

  10. لا كانَ ذاكَ البخ منه ولا

    كرَّر في أيَّامهِ قول بخ

    Neither was that dripping from it, nor

    Did it repeat in its days the word 'drip'

  11. كم ليلةٍ بالثلجِ شابت وكم

    مداد جنح بضياه انْتسخ

    How many nights whitened with snow and how much

    Ink of its wings after being soaked

  12. صكَّت به الأجرام من فوقنا

    ودار بالآفاقِ منَّا فلخ

    The celestial bodies above us clinked with it

    And around the horizons from us it slid

  13. وجاز في آذاننا واغلاً

    كأنَّهُ يقلعُ منها زنخ

    And it passed violently in our ears

    As if it were plucking twigs from them

  14. ما لي ببابِ الثلج من طاقةٍ

    وخوفه من كبدِي قد رسخ

    I have no power with the door of snow

    And its fear of my liver has taken root

  15. فعوّذوني دونه بالرّقى

    أو بخِّروني بالحصى والكلخ

    So protect me from it with incantations

    Or cense me with pebbles and potash

  16. متى أرى من مطرٍ رحمةً

    تطرد من قاعدةٍ ما انْفسخ

    When will I see rain's mercy

    That dispels what disintegrated from the base

  17. متى أرى جيب الغوادِي انْفرى

    وروع أفراخي لديهِ انْفرخ

    When will I see the pocket of clouds burst open

    And the chicks take fright in it - hatched

  18. اللائذين اليومَ من حاتمٍ

    كأنه شعوآءُ فيها فنخ

    Those who take refuge today from Hatem

    As if he were ravenous among them - inhaled

  19. تكوَّموا في البيتِ من خوفه

    فالبيت أو ناظمهُ كومُ فخ

    They huddled in the house in fear of it

    So the house or its arranger is a bird trap

  20. عادوا بنعمى أحمدٍ فاقْتضوا

    منها لدفعِ الثلج عادات رخّ

    They returned with Ahmed's blessing, so they took

    From it to repel the snow, easy customs

  21. ذو القلمِ الرَّاقي حياً أو علاً

    فيا له غصناً دَنا أو شمخ

    The one with the lofty pen, alive or sublime

    Oh what a branch he lowered or towered!

  22. وأنفق الخاءآتِ لكنه

    لعبدهِ من وفرِها ما رضخ

    And he spent generously but for

    His servant did not yield from its abundance

  23. فحيث من مصر ينخى الذي

    عارض من شرقيها ثوب نخ

    So where from Egypt will he who

    Opposed its east a dress of fringe, mew?

  24. من أينَ للقومِ الأولى قوَّضوا

    كذهنكَ المقتدح الممترخ

    Whence for the first people who undermined

    Your boiling mind like a relaxed bow

  25. هذا وفي الأقوامِ ذُو قوَّةٍ

    وإنَّما الشيخ عديّ شيخ

    This one has power over the people

    And yet the sheikh Adi is just a sheikh
