1. من مبلغ علماء الأعصر الأوَل

    إن التفاصيل قد جمّعن في الجمل

    From the bearers of knowledge of past eras

    Verily details have been gathered in sentences

  2. تجمعت في فتى العليا ولا عجبٌ

    إن يجمع الله كلّ الناس في رجل

    United in the eminent youth, no wonder

    If God unites all people in one man

  3. قاضي القضاة الذي سارت مآثرهُ

    بغير مثلٍ يوازيها سوى المثل

    The judge of judges whose exploits

    Have walked unmatched but by parables

  4. جمال ذي الأرض لا زالت محاسنه

    عن أفقها وجمال الدِّين والدول

    The beauty of the one whose excellences on earth

    Did not cease to adorn its horizons, the beauty of religion and state

  5. من أنشر العلم من بعدَ الهمود ومن

    ضمَّت يدله المعالي وهو كالهمل

    Who spread knowledge after collectiveness and who

    Brought together heights while being forbearing like a camel

  6. من اسْتقامت به الأوقات واعْتدلت

    للناسِ قبلَ نزول الشمس في الحمل

    By whom times were set right and moderated

    For people before the sun descended in Aries

  7. من لو أعارت حلاه المشتري شرفاً

    لم تعترضه عوادِي النحس من زحل

    If its rising graced his perfection with nobility

    No adverse fortunes from Saturn would oppose him

  8. أما دمشق فقد فازت بما ارْتقبت

    من طارفِ السعد أو من تالد الأمل

    As for Damascus, it has won what it hoped for

    Of auspicious fortune or fulfilled hopes

  9. فليهنها إن راعي حكمها يقِظٌ

    بالعلم حكم لا بالسعي والحيل

    So congratulations, for its ruler is vigilant

    Through knowledge, ruling not through striving and cunning

  10. ليت ابن إدريس لاقى ابن الدروس بها

    لكان يملأ قلب الأمّ بالجذل

    If only Ibn Idris met Ibn al-Durus there

    He would fill the heart of the mother with flowing tears

  11. ليتَ القضاة الأولى عادوا لما فقدوا

    مواقع القلم المرعيّ بالمقل

    If only early judges returned to what they lost

    Of fields for the grazing pen honored by the reed-pen

  12. ما أوضح الحكم فيها عن إمام هدى

    بالعلم متَّزر بالحلم مشتمل

    How clear is the rule through the imam, the guide

    Learned, wearing forbearance, all-encompassing

  13. لين الخلائق صعب البأس مانعه

    كأنه الجدّ بين السهل والجبل

    Gentle to all creation, fierce in might, protecting him

    As if he were honesty between easy and difficult

  14. أغرّ لو كانَ منه في الهلال سناً

    لم يستهلّ بسعدٍ غير متَّصل

    I wish if there was youthfulness in him from the crescent

    It would never have risen with disconnected good fortune

  15. وظاهريّ الأيادي غير خافيةٍ

    وليس عن شيم العليا بمعتزل

    With hands open, not concealed

    And not distant from the noble traits

  16. موكل بنقيَّات الأمور له

    إلى العلى عزمٌ لا وانٍ ولا وَكل

    Entrusted with purifying matters, his will

    Is lofty, neither wavering nor neglectful

  17. تزين العلم في عينيه حمَّلها

    كلّ الدجى وحماها النوم في الكلل

    Knowledge adorns his eyes; he carried all

    Darkness and protected them from sleepiness in stillness

  18. لم يكس في حلل العلياء يوسعها

    حتَّى لها عن قدود البيض في الحلل

    He never wore the garb of scholars, expanding it

    Until it was like the expanse of whiteness in garments

  19. له صفاتٌ بها الأقلام راكعةٌ

    كأنها من قبيل الصحف في قبل

    He has traits at which pens bow down

    As if they were pages in the early scripture

  20. سل علمه عن خفيَّاتٍ محجَّبةٍ

    وعن إحاطة أوصافٍ فلا تسل

    Ask his knowledge about veiled mysteries

    And do not ask about encompassing qualities

  21. مكارم لو رأى الطائيّ مسرحها

    لقال لا ناقتي فيها ولا جملي

    If only al-Ta’i saw their theater of nobilities

    He would say “neither my she-camel nor my supplies are here”

  22. ومنطق لو أراد الفخر غايته

    لبات بالريِّ يشكو بارح الغلل

    And logic, if al-Fakhr wanted its extremity

    He would spend the night confused, complaining of cramps

  23. وسؤدد يتدانى من تواضعه

    ولو ترقَّت إليه الشهب لم تصل

    And eloquence would cower before his humility

    Even if meteors descended onto him, they would not reach

  24. وفصل قول يلذّ الخصم موقعهُ

    حتَّى يودّ قضاءً غير منفصل

    His conclusive words please the opponent’s ears

    Until he would want a judgment not yet finished

  25. قالت يراعته والفكر يرشدها

    أصالة الرأي صانتني عن الخطل

    His vigilant conscience and thought guiding it said

    The authenticity of opinion protected me from error

  26. وأنشدت وبأرضِ الشام مركزها

    أعلى الممالك ما يبنى على القلل

    And it recited, while Syria was its stage

    “The highest kingdom is what is built on hills”

  27. وعطلت كتباً في الدين مارقةً

    فكلّ درع كتاب قدَّ من قبل

    And it invalidated in religion heretical books

    For every coat of mail is a book presented beforehand

  28. قد ختمت بيضة الإسلام والْتحقت

    بعشِّ أقلامه في الحادثِ الجلل

    It sealed the egg of Islam and ascertained

    In the nest of its pens during the momentous event

  29. كم من سعاة علومٍ قد تقدَّمهم

    تقدُّم السعي بالهادِي على الكفل

    How many seekers of knowledge it surpassed

    Like the surpassing of effort by the guide over the young

  30. إذا قصصت على راوٍ له خبراً

    حلّى من الذوقِ أو حلّى من العطل

    If an account was narrated to a transmitter who knows him

    He would make it sweeter with refinement or more fruitless with barrenness

  31. إذا شدا صوت عافية ومادحهُ

    غدا وحاشاه مثل الشارب الثمل

    When the voice of one healthy and praising him sang

    It went in the morning while protecting him from intoxication like a drunkard

  32. يا ماليَ البيت بيت الشعر من مدحٍ

    وكانَ أقفرَ بالوعساء من طلل

    Oh why is the abode of poetry full of praise from me

    When it was more desolate than ruins with owls

  33. يا من رأى جوده العافون منسرحاً

    فوجَّهوا العيس تطوي الرمل بالرمل

    Oh you who saw his open generosity overflowing

    And they turned the wood to be submerged in the sand

  34. ثنى امتداحك شعري عن عوائده

    فما بدأت بتشبيب ولا غزَل

    My poetry folded up its accustomed praise of you

    For I did not begin with descriptions of youth or love poems

  35. هذا على أنَّ لي عيناً مسهَّدة

    للحبِّ مخلوقة الإنسان من عجل

    That is because I have an eye prepared for love

    Created for passion when humans were created in haste

  36. أستلمح البرق غربيّ الديار متى

    تقدح أشعّته الأحشاء تشتعل

    I perceive the lightning of the west of the lands when

    Its gleams kindle embers in the darkness

  37. وأستصحّ بمعتل الصبا جسدي

    وربَّما صحَّت الأجسام بالعلل

    And I gain consciousness with the inclination of youth

    While bodies may gain health through illnesses

  38. وأذكر العيش مصقولاً سوالفه

    إذ مصر داري وأحبابي بها خوَلي

    And I recall refined life and its conversations

    When Egypt was my abode and my loved ones in it were my familiars

  39. هيهات ذكرك أحلى في فمي وكلا

    كفَّيك لا ذو اللمي أشهى إلى قبلي

    Alas! Your mention is sweeter in my mouth but neither

    Your palms, nor the smooth-cheeked one are more precious to my kiss

  40. تشاغل الناس في لذَّات دهرهمُ

    وأنت بالفضل والأفضال في شغل

    People are busy in the pleasures of their worldly lives

    While you are busy with virtue and all that is virtuous
