أثنى شذا الروض على فضلِ السحب
واشْتملت بالوشي أرداف الكُثب
The garden's breeze extolled the clouds' virtue
While hillsides donned cloaks of olives green
ما بين نورٍ مسفر اللثام
وزهر يضحك في الأكمام
Between unveiled light and flowers laughing
In sleeves, a pleasing sight and scene
إن كانت الأرض لها ذخائر
فهيَ لعمري هذهِ الأزاهر
If earth has treasures, these flowers are
Strewn by palm fronds over gold dinars
قد بسطتها راحة الغمائم
بسط الدنانير على الدراهم
Before each house, a garden lies
Between villages, a meadow vies
أحسن بوجه الزمن الوسيم
تعرف فيهِ نضرة النعيم
Have you not seen leaves vying
To captivate hearts fully
وحبَّذا وادِي حماة الرَّحب
حيثُ زهى العيش بهِ والعشب
Seize joy, my friend, when time allows
All seasons we let slip away
أرض السناء والهناء والمرح
والأمن واليُمن ورايات الفرح
As life meanders, let joy hold sway
Best I recall was our hunting sortie
ذات النواعير سقاة التربِ
وأمَّهات عصفه والأبّ
To seek quarry, most propitious
We caught beasts stealthily
تعلَّمت نوح الحمام الهتَّف
أيام كانت ذات فرعٍ أهيفِ
And did to birds more than requisite
When time came to shoot partridges
فكلّها من الحنينِ قلبُ
لا سيَّما والماء فيها صب
Happily we strode, faces joyous
In company judicious and just
لله ذاكَ السفح والوادِي الغرد
والماء معسول الرضاب مطَّرد
And lads like full moons luminous
From each a heavenly comet
يصبو لها الرائي ويهفو السامع
ويحمد العاصي فكيفَ الطائع
Leaving clouds of dust frenetic
Sweet youth, erect like spear
إذ نظرت للربى والنهر
فارْوِ عن الربيع أو عن جعفرِ
After moon joined bow, sincere
But for fear of bow in hand
محاسن تلهي العيون والفكر
ربيع روضات وشحرور صفر
Paper would sing under sleeves so grand
In his grip, tender limbs
أمام كلّ منزلٍ بستان
وبين كل قرية ميدان
Like the new moon slaying lives
Green and flowery, marvelous
أما رأيت الوُرق في الأوراق
جاذبة القلوب بالأطواق
Among meadows so wondrous
Mouths gaping, seeking feathers
فبادر اللذَّة يا فلان
واغْنم متى أمكنك الزَّمان
As if notes they gathered
Like a Nun about water
ولا تقل مشتى ولا مصيفُ
فكل وقتٍ للهنا شريف
Or conjoined eyebrows rather
Born for joy, though deaf as stones
كلّ زمانٍ يتقضَّى بالجذلْ
زمان عيش كيفما دارَ اعْتدلْ
Hearing mothers' urges and tones
Alas, these comets he lets fly
أحسن ما أذكر من أوقاتِهِ
وخير ما أبعث من لذَّاته
Piercing the dark, starry sky
As if shooting devils down
برُوزنا للصيدِ فيهِ والقنص
وحورنا من مرِّه أحلى الفُرَصْ
With meteors, never to frown
Until we reached a charmful place
وأخذنا الوحشَ من المسارب
وفعلنا بالطيرِ فوقَ الواجب
Brothers true, smiling face to face
So fine in beauty, serious and humorous
لما دنَا زمان رمي البندق
سرنا على وجهِ السُّرور المشرق
Aimed sincerely or facetious
Birds above, descending
في عصبة عادلة في الحكم
وغلمة مثل بدور التمّ
As if to water conjoining
We did not stop sharing
من كلِّ مبعوثٍ إلى الأطيارِ
تظله غمامة الغبارِ
Tales of bygone hunting ventures
Until the horizon donned garb of poppies
وكلّ معسول الشباب أغيد
منعطف عطف القضيب الأملد
And the West swallowed the sun completely
Musk spread from skies high above
قد حمدَ القوم بهِ عقبى السفر
عند اقْتران القوس منهُ بالقمر
As heaven's cheek blushed in our love
The group turned to observation
لولا حذار القوس في يديهِ
لغنَّت الورق على عطفيه
Witnessing from dusk's station
As birds in their abode retired
في كفِّه محنيَّة الأوصال
قاطعة الأعمار كالهلال
They watched with eyes untired
Like lions fierce in the darkness prowling
زهراء خضراء الإهاب معجبه
ممَّا ثوت بين الرياض المعشبه
The moon stars in blackness fouling
Flocks of birds arrived
فاغرة الأفواه للأطيار
طالبة لهنَّ بالأوتار
Like lines of prose described
Blessed the lines of seasoned fowlers
كأنَّها حولَ المياه نون
أو حاجب بما تشا مقرون
Dotted with letters from rifles
Each refined Tamm deserves the name
لها نبات بالمنى مغدوقة
من طيبةٍ واحدة مخلوقة
His brilliance gleaming like Full Moon's flame
Their necks adorned with morning's light
سامعة لما تشير الأمّ
مع أنَّها مثل الحجار صمّ
Below darkness's skirt in the night
All beauty and perfection endowed
واهاً لها من شهب تخطف
شاهرة بالعزمِ وهي تقذف
As if each in horizon a cloud
Accompanied by a dusky goose
كأنَّها والطيرُ منها هارب
خلفَ الشياطين شهاب ثاقب
And a grey Francolin let loose
Before them a colorful female
حتَّى نزلنا بمكانٍ مونق
إخوان صدقٍ أحدق بالملّق
Excelling in beauty, details
The hunter reaps what he's sown
فيا لهُ في الحسنِ من محلٍّ
مراد جدّ ومراد هزل
The colorful are most finely grown
Sometimes a partridge strutted by
للطيرِ في مياههِ مواقع
كأنَّها من فوقه فواقع
As if atop vigor he trod high
An eagle descended from mountains hiding
فلم نزل في منزل كريم
نروي حديث الرمي عن قديم
In stars it nested, confiding
Covered in dust, strong in hunt
حتَّى طوى الأفق رداء الورس
والْتقمَ المغرب قرص الشمس
Crafting from ruins vocab to vaunt
Each coot walked bizarre in a way
وذرّ مسك الليل من فرقِ الأفق
واتَّشحت خود السماء بالنطق
Phantom birds in array
Through darkest vales it walked
وابْتدرَ القومُ إلى المراصد
من ساهرِ الليل التَّمام ساهد
From Baghdad to Egypt it stalked
Goading on a destructive eagle
بينا الطيور في مداها سائره
إذا هم من عينه بالساهره
Lowering birds' gaze, forever regal
When flock finished its travail
كالليث يسطو كفه بأرقم
والبدر يرمي في الدجى بأنجم
Connected threads that had failed
Among white clouds is one named sentinel
وأقبلت مواكبُ الطيور
على طروسِ الجوِّ كالسطور
Many nights it stood as one
Urging nobles of highest ilk
فحبَّذا السطور في المهارق
منقوطة الأحرف بالبنادق
Over other cranes to soar and bilk
Each hawk studied prey closely
من كلِّ تمّ حقّ أن يسمي
ضياؤه المشرق بدر التمّ
Like lightning o’er darkness brightly
One white as clouds, well-arranged
تخالهُ من تحتِ عنقٍ قد سجا
طرَّة الصبح تحتَ أذيال الدجى
Why not, for it is sentinel
Guarded by a strong, towering
وكلّ حيّ حسن الوسامه
كأنَّه في أفقهِ غمامه
Among birds a Moses bestowed
Besides those of special qualities
تتبعه أوزَّة دكناء
من دونها لفلفة غرَّاء
Named in hunting as Duck Catcher
Black one whose chest a patch
تقدّمها أنيسة ملوَّنه
تابعة من كلّ وصفٍ أحسنه
As if guiding light in the pitch
Our bows never missed them
يجني بها الآكل خير ما جنى
وأحسن المأكول ما تلوَّنا
Striking with archers' vision
Until their breasts were bloodied
ورُبَّما مرَّ لديها حبرج
كأنَّه على نضارٍ يدرج
Fallen over dust heavily
As if at Qays shrines kneeling
وانْقضَّ من بعض الجبال النّسر
له بأبراج النجوم وكرُ
What sin to kill, they ponder, squealing
Following the mood of night and daybreak too
مغبرُّ الخلق شديد الأيدي
يبني على الكسرِ حروف الصيدِ
Both lovely scenes, nothing eschew
O glorious prey appealing to the eye
وكلّ كركيّ عجيب السير
كأنَّه طيف خيال الطير
Two faces, pleasing companions thereby
We did not stop until more game secured
ما بينَ أحشاء الظلام يسري
من أرضِ بغداد لأرض مصرِ
Royal prey with falcons allured
That which souls of hunters desired
يحثّ مسراه عقاب كاسره
خافضة لحظ الطيور ناصبه
Becoming for quarry cupids fired
We set out saying God's name, fate incurring
إذا مضت جملتها المعترضه
تواصلت خيوطها المنقرضه
Gliding regions with fastest racing
Horses flanking prey where'er it veered
وأبيض الغيم يسمَّى مرزما
كم بات مثل نوئه منسجما
Like shadows o'er it steered
Hooves unbounded sought to run
يحثُّ غرنوقاً شهيّ المجتلى
مقدَّماً على الغرانيق العلى
As if the four winds they become
Pleasant, of varied stunning hues
وكلُّ صوع مبهت المفاجي
كالبرقِ يخطو فوقَ ليلٍ داجي
As if gardens donned floral shoes
Red the lightning about which we knew
وأبيض مثل الغمام يسجم
وكيف لا يسجم وهو مرزمُ
Beauty's truth is red, is true
Yellow ones like gold coins
يحفُّه شبيطرٌ قويّ
في ملَّة الأطيار موسويّ
Pleasing palms of falconers refines
Greyish straight as arrows in full flight
هذا وكم ذي نظر ممتاز
ينعت في الواجب بالعُنَّاز
Paper bright as stars in light
Galloping, robes flow back
أسوده ذو غرَّة في الصدر
كأنه نور الهدى في الكفرِ
With arrows and parchment in their pack
Chestnut like verdant life
فلم تزل قسينا الضَّواري
تصيبها بأعين النظَّارِ
How not, for it is green and rife
Sorrel dominating steeds' run
حتَّى غدت دامية النحور
ساقطة منها على الخبيرِ
Thus darkness in darkness won
Youths above were like trees
كأنها وهي لدينا وقّع
لدى محاريب القيسّ ركَّعُ
Stars rising in the Atlas' seas
Belts equipped with weapons
وأصبحت أطيارنا قد حصّلت
قلا تسل بأيّ ذنبٍ قتلت
Each arrow heading to fortune beckons
Every plume kept feathers from resting
مُستتبعاً وجه العشا وجه السحر
وكلّ وجه منهما وجه أغَر
As if for guests' hearts manifesting
With shapes like letters engraved
يا لك من صيدٍ مقرّ العين
يرضي الصحاب وهو ذو وجهين
Read by guests when cravings caved
An ostrich like Jim, robust and able
لم نرضَ ما وفى من الأماني
حتَّى شفعناه بصيدٍ ثاني
While the eye sparkled like Mim notable
Yields to one reading it fine
صيد الملوك الصيد بالكواسر
والخيل في وجهِ الصباح السافرِ
Arrow or blade in perfect line
Each noble falcon, wings spread
ذاك الذي تصبو له الجوارح
فهي إلى طلاّبه طوامح
Continuous hunting, resting unsaid
Large claws for hunting steadfast
واثقة بالرزق حيث كانا
تغدو خماصاً وتجي بطانا
Scorching whatever the hunter has grasped
Talons like a sickle unleashed
سرنا على اسم الله والمناجح
نعومُ في الأقطارِ بالسوابح
To reap birds' lives without ceased
Hunters' living thereby made free
خيل تحاذي الصيد حيث مالا
كأنها أضحت له ظِلالا
Worthy of naming kitchen deputy
Fine the birds, serious and playful
تسعى لها قوائم لا تتبع
وكيف لا وهي الرياح الأربع
Diving, then to sky rising graceful
The lofty Crane, grand in repute
رائقة المنظر زهراء الغرر
كأنها الروضات حيّت بالزهر
Announcing news without refute
Like a Caliph who came
من أحمر للبرق عنه خبر
يشهدُ أن الحسن حقًّا أحمرُ
Corrupting earth, bloodshed and blame
Seeking fortune impatiently
وأصفر الجلدة كالدينار
يسرُّ كفّ الصائد الممتار
As if from sky it's summoned promptly
And each hawk, frightening to behold
وأشهب كالسهم في انْقضاضه
وصفحة الطرس في ابْيضاضه
Like a Jinn to birds, we're told
Bringing many beasts decay
ماضي السباق أظهر اللباس
ناهيك من سهمٍ ومن قرطاس
Killing many herds at bay
Blessed the royal hawks
وأخضر مثل سنا العيش النضر
يطوي الفلا وكيف لا وهو الخضر
Without peer or flaw
Exclusively endowed with perfect reason
وأدههمٌ سادَ على الجيادِ
وهكذا السواد في السواد
Humps like domes in their season
That hump, by my life
تحفُّنا من فوقها غلمان
كأنهم لدوحِها أغصان
Worthy of King of the Hunchback's wife
Prepared groups came forth
تركٌ تريك في سناء الملبس
كواكباً طالعة في الأطلسِ
With hounds and leopards of worth
Each leopard, carry noble
منظومة الأوساط بالسلاحِ
من كلِّ سهمٍ رجل النجاح
Seeing prey, it ropes and holds
Blessed its approach and withdrawal
وكلّ عضب ذرب المقاطع
يحرّف الهام عن المواضع
Facing state with canine full
As if its sharpness makes it bleed
على يدِ الزائر منهم زاده
من كلِّ باز قرم فؤاده
Burning stars with flame conceded
Bearing some old friends
قد كتبت في شكلِهِ حروف
تقري بما يقرى به الضيوف
Marks for brows, beauty trends
Unseen the like of its engraving
فالمنسر الأشفى بحال جيما
والعين تجلى بالنضارِ ميما
How not, when Ibn Muqla 'tis craving
Sulooqi pedigrees unlimited
دان لمن يتلوه خير جمّ
سهم إذا حبرته أو شهم
Motivate reward for feet fleet
Twisting hearts, claws spreading
وكلُّ شاهينٍ شهيِّ المرتمى
كبارقٍ طار وصوب قد همى
Marvel, a twister deploying
Hunting with might or just walking
بينا تراهُ ذاهباً لصيده
معتصماً بأيده وكيده
Reaching wishes running unbalking
Like a bow but more like an arrow
حتَّى تراهُ عائداً من أفقِهِ
ملتزماً طائره في عنقِه
Piercing clouds with meteors bright and sparrow
Seeing steers, it charges swift
أفلحَ من كانَ على يسراه
حتى غدت حاسدة يمناه
Like Mars rising with Bull adrift
Below its grip, ears bend
تلك يدٌ لا تعرف الإعسارا
لأجل ذا قد سمِّيت يسارَا
Waiting for its legs to offend
Were it possible for it to overtake the sun
وكلُّ صقر مسبل الجناح
مواصل الغدوّ والرَّواح
It would not be called gazelle for its run
Each cave lion assists its worth
ذو مقلةٍ لها ضرام واقد
تكادُ تشوي ما يصيد الصائدُ
Mighty over dens of the earth
Nearly seeking stairs to the sky
كأنما المخلب منه منجل
لحصدِ أعمار الطيور مرسل
Or in earth, tunnels whereby
Alas, from greed in hunt
عيش ذوي الصيد به عيش رخيّ
يصلحُ أن يدعى وكيل المطبخ
Those hounds all tricks blunt
Until the matter was done
يا حبَّذا طيور جدّ ولعبْ
تهوي إلى الأرضِ وللأفق تثبْ
Birds circled, to dust they stun
Between gardens we stood dignified
من سنقر عالي المدا والشانْ
معظم الأخبار والعيانْ
Ruling their spheres far and wide
Their foolish birds came
كأنه خليفة قد أقدما
يفسد في الأرضِ ويسفكُ الدما
As if mourners proclaiming
But our claws laid siege
يصعدُ خلفَ الرزق ليس بمهله
كأنه من السما يستعجله
To partridges and cranes
When flock finished its stand
ومن عقابٍ بأسها مروّع
كأنها للطيرِ جنٌّ تفزع
Threads rejoined in the sand
Those beasts lay dead
كم جلبت لطائرٍ من همن
وكم وكم قد أهلكت من قرن
As if the land their blood shed
Or meadows bloomed red
وحبَّذا كواسر الكواهي
عديمة الأنظار والأشباه
Their dead like infidels
Death their fate, and hell
مخصوصة بالطرد القويم
حدباً كظهر الذنب الركيم
The sight pleased hearts
With meat and fat as sweet tarts
ذاك لعمري حدبٌ للرائي
يعدل ملك القلعة الحدباء
By God, the hated scene
Meaning's spring from leaves green
هذا وقد تجهَّزت أعدادٌ
تجمعها الكلاب والفهاد
Filled our hands with triumph neat
Thanking fate we were compete
من كلِّ فهدٍ عنتريّ الحمله
إذا رأى شخص مهاة عَبله
Circling the victorious king
Like stars round the moon's ring
مبارك الإقبال والإعراض
مستقبل الحال بنابٍ ماض
Muhammad defender of Ahmad's creed
The King, son of King Muyiidd
كأنه من حدِّه كنابه
قد أحرق الأنجم في إهابه
People said lucky his share
I said, yes, and my portion his care
له على مسائل الجفون
خطّ لبعض الألفات الجون
As a child, the lofty he reached
Since the cradle, Mahdi entreached
ما أبصر المبصر خطًّا مثله
وكيف لا والخطّ لابن مقله
Nursed with weaned milk tips
Intermingled like milk sips
وكلُّ منسوب إلى سلوق
أهرت وثَّاب الخطا مشوق
Between notebooks of flags and signs
Revered by pens' confines
طاوي الفؤاد ناشر الأظافر
يا عجباً منه لطاوٍ ناشرِ
Firm, gentle wielding the sword
Rewarding with pen, book award
يعضُّ بالبيض ويخطو بالقنا
ويسبق الوهم لإدراك المنى
Were he to touch a rock, a river burst
Accompanying a star, a full moon birthed
كالقوس إلاَّ أنه كالسهم
والغيم يجلو عن شهاب رجم
By his fortune, bounties sealed
So on all fronts, the Seal
إذا ترآى بقر الوحش انْدفع
كأنه المرِّيخ في الثور طلع
No injustice under his castle of might
Save upon enemies and wealth profiteered right
قاصرة عن طرفِ يداه
مشروطة برجلِهِ أذناه
Consider his love of hunt excessive
We are trained for his battle prepasis
لو أمكن الشمس التي تجلى له
ما سمِّيت من خوفها غزاله
Don't you see the dinar fearful
In the crook's palm, dry and tearful
يشفعه بكلِّ غورٍ غار
مغالب الصيد على الأوكار
O you who traverse horse and sand
Seeking heights, arriving by caravan
يكاد يبغي سلَّماً إلى السما
أو نفقاً في الأرضِ حيثُ يمَّما
When you contemplate his triumphant stand
Bind to it your waist's most precious band
واهاً لها من أكلُبٍ طوارد
معربة عن مضمر المصائد
A king, if pondered, a king declared
Cut down by fate's scissors fair
قد بالغت من طمعٍ في كسبها
ففتَّشت عن أنفسٍ لم تخبها
Like full moon in its halo and perfection
Like a towering height in its poise and discretion
حتَّى إذا تمَّت بها الأمور
حفَّت بنا لصيدِها الطيور
Bow before him, world of men
An inheritance from Adam gained
ما بين روضات صمدنا نحوها
ودور آفاق ملكنا جوّها
No harm to stand in his camp's protection
To taste his sweetest honey description
واسْتقبلت أطيارها البزاة
معلمة كأنها عزاة
A vision healing pride in people
A copy responding to the original
فلم تزل تسطو سطا الحجَّاج
على الكراكيّ أو الدرَّاج
His home no enmity would dare approach
Successful gate leading to hopes
إذا نحت سائرة محلِّقة
عادت بها كمضغة مخلّقه
In his shade, I am rich, need no land
As one settled in Muzan no villages demand
حتى غدت تلك الضواري صرعى
مجموعة لدى التراب جمْعا
His gifts in succession relayed
As I recount Jabir and Ata's tales
كأن أقطار الفلاة مجزره
أو روضة من الدماءِ مزهره
Clutching the Muyiidd's generosity
Praising Muhammad's decree
كأنَّ صرعى وحشها كفار
الموت عقبى أمرها والنار
Seeking old favour or romance anew
No quest went astray therein nor me too
للمرء فيها منظرٌ أحبّه
يملأ من لحمٍ وشحمٍ قلبه
My words gain more vividness thereby
As if wine when decanted thereby
لله ذاكَ المنظر المهنى
إنّ معان عن ذراه عدنا
You have enough of my verse eulogizing
And my poetry empowered, Turkish rising
قد ملئت من ظفر أيدينا
وقد شكرنا الفضل ما حيينا
نشير حول الملك المنصور
كالشهب حول القمر المنير
محمدٌ ناصر دين أحمد
الملك ابن الملك المؤيد
قالَ الأنام حظّه جليّ
قلتُ نعم وجدُّه عليّ
ذاكَ الذي ساما العلى صبيًّا
وجاءه من مهده مهديا
ناش على الحرِّ وتقليب المنن
كأنما مزجته من اللَّبن
بين حجور العلم والأعلام
تكنفه لواحظ الأقلام
محكم السطوة سحَّاح الديم
يأخذ بالسيفِ ويعطي بالقلم
لو لمس الصخر لفاض نهرا
أو صحب النجم لعاد بدرا
تختمت بيُمنه المكارمُ
فهو على كلِّ الوجوه حاتمُ
لا ظلم تلقى في حماه العالي
إلاَّ على الأعداء والأموال
أما ترى بالصيدِ فرط حبّه
تمرنا على اعتياد حربه
أما ترى الدينار منه خائفا
أصفر في كفِّ العفاة ناشفا
يا قاطعاً عرض الفلا وواصلاً
وقادماً يبغي العلا وراحلا
إذا تأمَّلت المقام الناصريّ
فاعْقد عليهِ أكرم الخناصر
ملك إذا حققته قلت ملك
قاضية بسعدِهِ أيدِي الفلك
كالبدر في سنائِهِ وتمِّهِ
والطود في وقاره وحلمه
تسجد إن لاحَ رؤوس العالم
وراثة قد حازها من آدم
ما ضرَّ من خيَّم في جنابه
أن لا يكون الشهد من أطنابه
مرأى يشفُّ عن فخارِ الأهل
ونسخة قد قوبلت بالأصل
جنابه عن جاره لا ينكب
وباب نجح للمنى مجرَّب
غنِيتُ في ظلالِهِ عن الورى
غنى نزيل المزن عن قصد القرى
ورحت عن نعماه بالتواتر
أروي أحاديث عطا وجابر
معتصماً بالكرمِ المؤيد
مصلي الحمد على محمد
قديم قصد وثناء أو هوى
ما ضلَّ سعيٌ فيهما ولا غوى
يزيد لفظي بهجةً ورونقاً
كأنه الخمرة إذ تُعتقا
حسبكَ منِّي في الثناءِ شاعرا
وحسب شعري قوَّة وناصرا
