1. هدَّدتموا بالضنا من ليسَ يرتدع

    هيهات لم يبقَ فيه للضنا طمع

    You threatened with abandonment one who cannot be deterred

    Alas, there is no longer in him hope for abandonment

  2. صبًّا تحجب عن عذَّاله سقماً

    فاعْجب لمن بعوادِي الضرّ ينتفع

    Pouring copious tears to hide his illness from his tormentor

    So strange is he who benefits from the calamities of misfortune

  3. أحبابنا كم أقاسي بعدكم جزعاً

    لو كانَ ينفعني من بعدكم جزع

    How much, O beloved ones, have I suffered anguish since you left

    If only anguish after you could avail me

  4. حمَّلتمُ العين يا أشهى العيان لها

    من أدمع وسهاد فوق ما تسع

    You burdened the eye, O most beloved of eyes,

    With tears and pillows beyond what it can contain

  5. ماءٌ من الجفنِ يغني روح واحدةٍ

    كأنما السمّ حقًّا فيه منتقع

    Tears from the eyelids avail one soul

    As if poison itself were steeped in them

  6. يا منعمين بطيفٍ بعد فرقتهم

    دعوا التهكم أين الأعين الهجع

    O you made blissful by a phantom after their separation

    Spare your mockery, where are the sleeping eyes

  7. كلفتموني مواريثَ الذين قضوا

    من الغرامِ فهل للوصلِ مرتجع

    You tasked me with the inheritance of those who passed away

    From passion, so can there be a return to union?

  8. وعاذلٍ فيكُم تعبان قلت له

    إن كنت أعمى فإني لستُ أستمع

    And to the critic among you, wearied, I said

    If I am blind, I am not deaf

  9. يخادعُ السمعَ والأحشاء قائلةٌ

    غيري بأكثر هذا الناس ينخدع

    It deceives the hearing and intestines when she says

    Others are more often deceived than these people

  10. ليتَ الثغور جلت برقاً له فرأى

    سحائب الدمع وجداً كيفَ تنهمع

    Would that the battlefields were ablaze for him to see

    The clouds of tears and the flowing of blood

  11. وربّ ظالمةٍ ما عند مقلتها

    لفارشِ الخدّ إلاَّ السيف والنطع

    By the Lord of a dark night whose eyelids contain

    Only the sword and the sheath

  12. يشكو كما يتشكَّى خصرها سغباً

    وجارهُ الرّدف قد أودى به الشبع

    It complains just as her waist complains of leanness

    While her fleshy thigh is harmed by obesity

  13. كأنما ينقل البين المشتّ لها

    دمي فتحمرّ خدَّاها وأمتقع

    As if the distance transfers my blood to redden her cheeks

    And gather in her pure complexion

  14. حثَّت لوشك النوى عيساً تحبّ سرًى

    لكنها للأسى بين الحشا تضع

    She urged the drinking of wine in secret though she loves

    But she puts sorrow between joy and intimacy

  15. وخادعتنيَ من عرفِ الحمى سحراً

    بالريح والعاشق المسكين ينخدع

    And she deceived me, knowing the magic of passion

    With the wind, while the hapless lover is deceived

  16. كفى دلالك إن الصبر طاوعني

    وإن قلبيَ من كفَّيك منتزع

    Enough of your coquetry, patience has obeyed me

    Though my heart is snatched from your hands

  17. لا تبتغي كلماتي اليوم في غزلٍ

    فهنَّ لابن عليّ في الثنا شِيَع

    Do not seek my words today in love poetry

    For they are for the son of Ali sincerely devoted

  18. والمانح الجزل لا منٌّ ولا ملك

    والمانع السرح لا خوفٌ ولا جزع

    The generous conferrer, neither limited nor finite

    And the withholder of drink, neither fear nor anguish

  19. علا عن المدح حتَّى ما يهش له

    كأنما المدح في أوصافِه قزَع

    He rose above praise until none hasten to him

    As if praise in describing him is inadequate

  20. يممْ حماه إذا ما خفت ضائعةً

    فبابه بالندى كالصدر متسع

    When valuables are endangered, his protection encompasses them

    So his door, like his chest, is open wide

  21. وقلْ لحاسدِه المغرور مت كمداً

    ذاك الجناب صفاه ليسَ ينصدع

    And say to his arrogant envious rival, kill yourself in rage

    That exalted companion, his being is pure, it cannot crack

  22. هيَّا لك الكرم الطائيّ مفترق

    للناسِ والسؤدد القيسيّ مجتمع

    The cloud that depicted his virtues, do you not see

    It pouring down upon the face of the earth?

  23. بابٌ لبذلِ اللهى في كلّ نائبة

    مجرَّبٌ وندًى في الجدب منتجع

    The dark-lipped said: Whomever of us attends to him

    Spends her night, as they say, thunderstruck

  24. وسيد بالمعالِي الغرّ مؤتلفٌ

    بالحمدِ مشتغلٌ بالمجدِ مطَّلع

    The authority of pens flourished with his support

    So they came to excel in every good thing

  25. جمُّ المناقب يلقى العسر من يدِه

    في المحل ما لقيت من علمه البدَع

    Darkening falsehood and clarifying every confusion

    Is it the night that is murky or is it the lamp?

  26. لو لم يكن نجمه كالسيف منصلطاً

    ما راحَ كلّ قرين وهوَ منقطع

    O noblest of creatures in purified morals

    And best of people whether they fly or fall

  27. يهوى المعالي وأبكارَ الكلام فما

    يزال يفرع أعلاها ويفترع

    The masses have bowed their necks down

    To your perfection, overtaken by awe

  28. فتوَّةٌ وفتاوٍ لا نظيرَ لها

    كأنه في الندى والحكم مخترع

    Do not listen to people's talk of nobility

    The words of others are lies and worthless

  29. وأنعمٌ قربت عن همَّةٍ بعُدت

    كالشمس يدنو سناها حينَ ترتفع

    A band claims knowledge though ignorant

    Splitting their noses as the misguided do

  30. لا عيبَ في لفظه المنظوم جوهرُه

    إلاَّ نوافثُ فيها للنهى خدَع

    They portrayed you while depicting no wisdom

    The mosques tell of their own function

  31. جُنَّ الغمام الذي حاكى مكارمه

    أما تراه على وجه الثرى يقع

    An army whose garments expose their ankles

    As if they follow in your footsteps

  32. وقالت السمر من يلقى يراعته

    منا فأمست كما قد قيل تقترع

    His prayers turned away the arrows of those who opposed

    Not white, mourning, nor sanctioned

  33. صحَّت إمامة أقلامٍ براحتِه

    فأصبحت بخبير الخير تلتفع

    O son of the foremost nobility in every honorable deed

    Whether they boast or clash, they clash

  34. تسوَدّ نِقْساً وتجلو كلّ داجيةٍ

    فهل هيَ الليل داج أم هي الشمع

    They have no keys to generosity when they reach

    The pinnacle of glory, nor in times of distress

  35. يا أشرفَ الخلق أخلاقاً مطهَّرةً

    وأفضل الناس إن طاروا وإن وقعوا

    However much their efforts attained seriousness, they have not triumphed

    In it, and however much time brought them down, they did not yield

  36. إن الجماهيرَ قد ذلَّت رقابهُم

    إلى كمالك واسْتوفاهمُ الهلع

    For him is the finest eloquence of pens in his hand

    And piercing through the tumult in times of peace

  37. لا تسمعنَّ حديثَ القوم في شرفٍ

    حديثُ غيرك موضوعٌ ومتضع

    Its blade increases as the spear pierces his side

    As if another rib were added to his ribs

  38. وعصبة تدعي علماً وقد جهلت

    أنشقت آنافها نكباء تجتدع

    And the refuge of knowledge in his homeland is for a lad

    Of generosity, and in it are the honey and the sting

  39. حاكوك شخصاً ولكن ما حكوا رشداً

    إن المساجد تحكي شكلها البيع

    Let the kinfolk who avoided me know

    That I am residing with you, neither poverty nor distress

  40. وجحفل لجبّ تطفو غواربه

    كأنما تبّع في أثره تبع

    Collared with gifts, sounding poetry without match

    Forgetting the ancients, their generosity, and rhymes

  41. ردَّت رداه سهامٌ من دعائك لا

    بيضٌ حدادٌ ولا خِطّيةٌ شرع

    I have comfort in your delightful gathering

    And in the copious drink, relaxed and seated

  42. يا ابن الكرام الأولى في كلّ مكرمةٍ

    إن فاخروا فخروا أو قارعوا قرعوا

    Excellent is the lad you are, not tiring of a youth

    His day sufficed him, neither keeping nor leaving

  43. لا في اليسارِ مفاريحٌ إذا بلغوا

    غايات مجدٍ ولا في أزْمة جزع

    You restored my state without hearing my complaint

    After people resented me, though they heard

  44. كم نالَ سعيهمو جدّ فما بطروا

    فيه وكم نالهم دهرٌ فما خضعوا

    My thoughts flowed freely in some praises of him

    And to the poor also, with drink and passion

  45. من كلّ أروع للأقلام في يدِه

    وللظُّبا في الوغى والسلم مطلع

    I searched for your brilliant traits but its attainment is denied

    Safekeeping it and keeping your loftiness from reach

  46. تزداد والرمح في جنبيه سوْرَته

    كأنما زيدَا في أضلاعه ضلع

    I will not cease restoring favor to me though

  47. وملجأ العلم في أوطانه لفتىً

    للجودِ والبأس فيه الشهد واللسع

    My youth expires, there can be no restoring it

  48. من مبلغٌ عنِّيَ الأهل الذين نأوا

    إني نزيلك لا فقرٌ ولا فزع

    And I said to al-Khatib, praise him mentioning the munificence

    Of others, though most people are thereby deceived

  49. مطوَّق بهباتٍ ساجعٌ بثناً

    ينسي الأوائل ما جادوا وما سجعوا

  50. لي بالجنا الحلو في ناديك مرتفقٌ

    وبالندى الغمر مصطاف ومرتبع

  51. نعمَ الفتى أنتَ لا تحنو على نشبٍ

    كفَّاه يوماً ولا تبقي ولا تدع

  52. أجديت حالي ولم تسمع شكايته

    من بعد ما ضنَّ أقوامٌ وقد سمعوا

  53. وجادَ فكري بنوعٍ من مدائحه

    وللمساكين أيضاً بالندى ولع

  54. بحثت عن وصفك الزاكي فنائله

    مسلمٌ ومدى علياك ممتنع

  55. ما زلت ترتجع النعمى إليَّ إلى

    إن خلت أن شباب العمر مرتجع

  56. وقلت للخاطبِي مدحي بذكرِ ندى

    غيري بأكثر هذا الناس ينخدع
