1. تصرّمت الأيام دون وصالكِ

    فمن شافعي في الحب يا ابنة مالكِ

    The days have passed without your company,

    So who will intercede for me in love, O daughter of Malik?

  2. فكان الكرى يدني خيالك وانقضى

    فلا منك تنويلٌ ولا من خيالكِ

    The phantoms drew near and then withdrew,

    Neither did you intend, nor did your phantoms.

  3. رويدك قد أوثقت بالهمِّ مهجتي

    عليك فماذا يُبتغى بملالك

    My innermost being is tightly bound by worries for you -

    What can be sought from your indifference?

  4. أفي كلّ يوم لي إليكِ مطالبٌ

    ولكنها محفوفةٌ بمهالك

    Do I make demands of you each day

    Yet they are surrounded by your delays?

  5. وغيرانَ قد مدّ الحجب من الظبا

    وقد كان يكفيه حجابُ دلالك

    Jealousy has drawn veils from the antelope

    And your father's veil would have sufficed, O noble one.

  6. فتنت بخالٍ فوق خدِّكِ صانه

    أبوك فويلي من أبيكِ وخالك

    I saw the sun in your cheek, once radiant and once distant

    How strange of one so reliant on your ropes.

  7. وعاينت منك الشمس بعداً وبهجةً

    فيا عجباً من واثقٍ بحبالك

    You abandoned me, and the lover gained nothing

    I ransom you - abandon me after that!

  8. هجرتِ وما فاز المحبّ بزورةٍ

    فديتك زُوري واهجري بعد ذلك

    May God grant you a heart that, whenever it turns

    To beauty, finds a strong bond.

  9. لك الله قلباً كلما جرّ طرفه

    إلى الحسن ألقى عروة المتماسك

    That wards off evil and bends away

    From the harm of love - wayward and crooked.

  10. تأبط شراً من أذى الوجد وانثنى

    كثير الهوى شتى النوى والمسالك

    Stop and watch for him suffering in the terrible darkness

    Following your path, or else in the ashes of your abode.

  11. قفي تنظريه في لظى البيد تابعاً

    سراك وإلا في رماد ديارك

    May God water the sides of the abode with bright flowers

    In which flowers laughs open-mouthed.

  12. سقى الله أكناف الديار هوامعاً

    تبيت بها الأزهار غرّ المضاحك

    As if the dew of the Glorious King made them flourish

    And the blossoms of the open country burst into bloom.

  13. كأنَّ ندى الملك المؤيد جادها

    فأسفر نوَّار الربى عن سبائك

    A king whose wishes outstrip his gifts

    Racing the pilgrims towards the sacred rites.

  14. مليكٌ إلى مغناه تستبق المنى

    مسابقة الحجاج نحو المناسك

    He has a nature that counts praise of him

    If you count the interwoven flowers of the stars.

  15. له شيمٌ تحصي المدائح وصفها

    إذا أحصيت زهر النجوم الشوابك

    On earth are news and traces of him

    Flying through the heavens amidst the angels.

  16. وفي الأرض أخبار له ومآثرٌ

    تسير سرَى الأسماء بين الملائك

    His views and swords protected the earth

    With every shining point in the gloom of battles.

  17. حمى الأرض من آرائه وسيوفه

    بكل مضيءٍ في دجى الخطب فاتك

    And he calmed it, so that if he wished, no hand would touch

    The branches of the mimosa beneath the pounding winds.

  18. وسكّنها حتى لو اختار لم تمس

    غصون النقا تحت الرياح السواهك

    And when the Glorious King made his view prevail

    His far-reaching shadow and the light of realms prevailed.

  19. ولما جلا الملك المؤيد رأيه

    جلا ظله الممدود وهج الممالك

    August in rule, munificent in gift, outpacing the lofty,

    Resplendent in state, revealing the night of battles.

  20. مهيب السطا هامي العطا سابق العلى

    جليّ الحلا كشَّاف ليل المعارك

    He assumed control when the greatest rulers were helpless

    And he was generous, so we said: Shame on the platforms!

  21. تولى فيا عجز الأكاسرة الأولى

    وجادَ فقلنا يا حياء البرامك

    Al-ʿĀfūn shared his wealth with him

    Yet has no share in his glory or partnership.

  22. وشاركه العافون في ذات ماله

    وليس له في مجدِه من مشارك

    Noble, he is ashamed of words and deeds

    And accepts only genuine, untarnished pearls.

  23. كريمٌ يجيل الرأي فعلاً ومنطقاً

    فلا يرتضي غير الدراري السوامك

    The heels of the bows are a wonder in his presence

    Watered by his bounty's dew above your stature.

  24. كعوب القنا عجباً براحته التي

    يروِّي نداها مشرعات طوالك

    When the King shakes a cultivated heel amongst them

    What a heel to be blessed!

  25. إذا هزَّ منها الملك كعباً مثقفاً

    فيا لك من كعبٍ عليه مبارك

    And when he hauls their heads towards the frontiers

    The skulls of the enemies are stripped bare.

  26. وإن جرَّ في صوبِ الثغور رؤوسها

    جلت قلح الأعدا جلاء المساوك

    By his hand are pens of knowledge

    That unravel the minds of men, unraveling you.

  27. ولله من أقلام علمٍ بكفِّه

    سوالب ألباب الرجال سوَالك

    As if their meanings were coquettish girls

    Frolicking over the embroidery above your couch.

  28. كأنَّ معانيها كواعب تنجلي

    على حبكِ الإدراج فوق آرائك

    As if the whiteness of the pages amidst their lines

    Were his hands in the folding up of the passing years.

  29. كأنَّ بياض الطرس بين سطورها

    أياديه في طيِّ السنين الحوالك

    O you whose white hands are bestowed with triumph

    Over you, despite the passage of time.

  30. أمسدي الأيادي البيض دعوة ظافر

    لديك على رغم الزمان المماحك

    You looked upon my state with the glance of one departing

    In which time had extended its respite towards you.

  31. عطفت على حالي بنظرة سائرٍ

    وقد مدَّ فيها الدهر راحة هاتك

    So without you my eulogy is inadequate

    Making up for its deficiencies, just for you.

  32. فدونك من مدحِي اجتهاد مقصر

    تداركت من أحواله شلوَها لك

    Worry, dismissed for a while, possesses him

    Until the approval of the Owner erases the anguish of loss.
