1. واوحشتي لمقامٍ منك محمود

    واحسرتي لودادٍ فيك معهود

    I long for the dwelling where you once stayed

    And mourn for the love that was familiar to you

  2. لو شامَ طرفك ما ألقاه من حربٍ

    لم تدرِ من هوَ منَّا الهالكُ المودِي

    Had your glance met the wars I have endured

    You wouldn't know who among us would perish

  3. إنَّا إلى اللهِ منْ رُزْءٍ دنا فرمى

    دمعي وشجوي بإطلاقٍ وتقييد

    We are destined by fate to suffer and so it cast

    My tears and laments into bondage and freedom

  4. يا معرضاً عن لقاءِ الصحب منقطعاً

    وكان أكرم مصحوبٍ ومودود

    O you who shun the company of friends, aloof

    Yet were the noblest of companions and beloved

  5. بالرّغم أن أنشدَ الألفاظ عاطلةً

    من حلي مدحك أثناءَ الأناشيد

    Though you recited words devoid of meaning

    In praising you during lyrical chants

  6. وأن أعوَّضَ منثورَ المدامع عن

    سماعِ درٍّ من الأقوال منضود

    And compensated scattering tears for

    Hearing precious words sung in verse

  7. لم يبقَ بعدك ذو سجعٍ أعارضه

    إلاَّ الحمائم في نوحٍ وتعديد

    None remains for me to contend with in rhyme

    Except doves in their weeping and cooing

  8. لم يبقَ بعدك من تدعو بديهته

    لحجِّ بيتٍ من الأشعارِ مقصود

    None remains whose natural talent invites

    To compose a versical house purposefully built

  9. من للدَّواوين يقضي بالتأمل في

    مخرّجٍ من معانيها ومردود

    Who ponders poetic collections to deduce

    Meanings, insights and benefits untold

  10. كنَّا نعدُّك فرداً في موازنها

    لقدْ رُزِئنا بموزونٍ ومعدود

    We counted you unmatched in appraising them

    Yet we are scorned by measures and numbers

  11. من للرَّسائلِ في لاماتِ أحرفها

    تغزو العداةَ بألفاظٍ صناديد

    Who dispatched messages whose words

    Vanquished foes with the swords of orators

  12. من للتصانيفِ ضمَّت كلّ شاردةٍ

    وصحّحت بعد تبديلٍ وتبديد

    Who compiled each scattered piece

    And corrected after changing and dispersing

  13. للهِ ما ذا لجدواها وأحرفها

    من القلائدِ في سمعٍ وفي جيد

    To God - how many necklaces of words

    Adorn ears and necks from their produce

  14. سقياً لعهدكَ من سحَّاب ذيل تقًى

    مضى وليسَ الأذى منه بمعهود

    Quenching from your pact, clouds of reverent spirits

    Have passed, while harm from you stays unfulfilled

  15. عضبٌ إذا رمت زهداً أو حذرت وغى

    أرضاكَ في ذا وفي هذا بتجريد

    Wrath, if you reject asceticism or forbid evil

    Pleases you through this or through abstinence

  16. هيَ المنيةُ لا تنفكُّ صائدةً

    نفوسنا بين مسموعٍ ومشهود

    It is death, ever hunting

    Our souls amid the seen and the unseen

  17. أينَ الملوكُ الأولى كانت منازلهم

    تزاحمُ البحرَ في عزٍّ وتسييد

    Where are the early kings whose abodes

    Rivaled oceans in might and domination?

  18. لم يحمهم سرد داود الذي ملكوا

    من المنونِ ولا جنْد ابن داود

    Recording David's rule did not protect them

    From death, nor the hosts of David's son

  19. إيهٍ سقاكَ شهاب الدِّين صوب حياً

    يكادُ يعشب أطراف الجلاميد

    Alas! The shooting star of faith took you to live

    Among pastures almost turning green

  20. لو لم تكنْ بوفاء القصد تسعفنا

    كانت بنوكَ وفاً عن كلِّ مقصود

    Had your loyalty not aided us providentially

    Your children's loyalty would have fallen short

  21. في كلِّ معنًى أرى حسناك واضحةً

    فحسرتي كلّ وقتٍ ذات تجديد

    In every sense, I see your virtues manifest

    So my regrets renew at every moment
