1. قاضي القضاة بيمنى حكمه القلم

    يا ساريَ القصد هذا الباب والعلم

    The supreme judge rules with his right hand

    O you who intend righteousness, this is the door of justice and knowledge

  2. هذا اليراع الذي تجني الفخار به

    يدُ الإمام التي معروفها أمَمُ

    This flowing river from which pottery is collected

    The hand of the Imam, well known among nations

  3. إن آلم الحكم فقد الذاهبين فقد

    وافى الهناء فزال اللبس والألمُ

    When he assumed authority, those who passed were gone

    He attained glory, so ambiguity and pain disappeared

  4. ولىّ عليّ ووافى بعد مشبهه

    كالسّيل أقبل لما ولّت الدّيم

    Ali succeeded and after those like him arrived

    Like a torrent that approaches when the rain pours down

  5. لا يبعد الله أيام العلاء فما

    يقضي حقوق ثناها في الأنام فمُ

    God does not prolong the days of glory, so none

    Establishes rights or sings his praises among people

  6. ويمنع الله بالراقي لرتبته

    فقد تشابهت الأخلاق والشّيمُ

    And God protects him for his status

    So morals and traits have become similar

  7. معْيي المماثل في علمٍ وفيض ندًى

    فالسحب باكية والبحر ملتطمُ

    There is no equal to him in knowledge and flowing wisdom

    Thus the clouds weep while the sea roars

  8. وكاتم الصدقات الغرّ تكرمةً

    للمرء لو كانَ عرف المسك يكتتم

    One who hides good deeds out of dignity

    Should a man conceal the scent of musk?

  9. وافى الشآم وما خلنا الغمام إذاً

    بالشام ينشأ من مصرٍ وينسجم

    He came to Damascus and before we left the clouds

    Damascus flourishes from Egypt and blends in

  10. آهاً لمصرٍ وقد شابت لفرقته

    فليس ينكر أن يعزى لها هرم

    Alas for Egypt when he left it

    Who would deny that it should be consoled for its ruin?

  11. تقاسمت بعد رؤياه الأسى ودرت

    أن البلاد لها مثل الورَى قِسم

    After seeing him it shared the sorrow and knew

    That, like mirrors, lands possess a portion

  12. وأوحش الثغر من مرأى محاسنه

    فما يكاد بوجه الدهر يبتسم

    His absence desolated the border from the sight of his beauty

    So that the face of time scarcely smiled

  13. ينشي وينشد فيه الثغر من أسفٍ

    بيتاً تكاد له الأحشاء تضطرم

    The border lamented in agony

    A poem that nearly set my heart aflame

  14. يا من يعزّ علينا أن نفارقهم

    وجْداننا كل شيء بعدكم عدم

    O he whose loss grieves us, whom we hate to leave

    Without you everything is naught

  15. يزهو الشآم بمن فارقت طلعته

    وا حرّ قلباه ممن قلبه شبم

    Damascus glories in him who left it

    While his heart burned for those whose hearts are resolute

  16. نعم الهدى ونجوم الليل حائرة

    والمجتدى وزمان المحل محتدم

    What fine guidance, while the stars wander astray

    The guided, while the age is in turmoil

  17. أقسمت بالمرسلات السمر في يده

    لقد تهيّب منها الأبيض الخدِم

    I swear by the crescent moons in his hand

    Even the brightest servant is awed by them

  18. وقائل أسرت مسراه قلت له

    نعم المنام الذي أبصرتَ والحلم

    I said to one who claimed to control his destiny

    What a fine sleep you saw and dream!

  19. لو لم تنم لم تحاول في العلى طرقاً

    زلّت بنجم الثريَّا دونها القَدَم

    Had you not slept, you would not have sought lofty paths

    Stumbling under the Star of Taurus' footsteps

  20. كل الفصول ربيعٌ في منازله

    وكل أشهرنا في بابه حرُمُ

    In his dwellings all seasons are spring

    And every month in his court inviolable

  21. يا واثق الظن في علياه عش أبداً

    وأنت معتضدٌ بالسعد معتصم

    O confident of aid from the Most High, live forever

    Supported by fortune, steadfast

  22. ورُمْهُ إن طاشت الأيام أو بخلت

    فالحلم والجود في ناديه مقتسم

    And hurl him, if days rebel or stint

    Forbearance and munificence in his club are partners

  23. هنالك الطود إلا أنه رجل

    في كفِّه البحر إلا أنه كرم

    There lies the mountain, yet he is but a man

    In whose palm the sea lies, yet he is generous

  24. حبر طباق المعالي فيه متضحٌ

    فالمال مفترق والمجد ملتئم

    The ink of sublime tablet pages is clear in him

    Wealth is shared, glory assembled

  25. وللجناس نصيب من مناقبِه

    فالفضل والفصل والأحكام والحكم

    Rhyme has a share in his virtues

    So grace, judgment, laws and wisdom

  26. ما يرفع الظن طرفاً في مكارمه

    إلا وعزم الرجا بالنجح منجزم

    Nothing raises hopes of his nobility

    Save that intention to succeed is resolute with him

  27. لبشره وارتياح المكرمات به

    مقدّمات عليها تنتج النعم

    The loftiest traits and gifts rejoice in him

    Inducements to which boons are led

  28. قالت مناقبه العليا وما أفكت

    هذا التقّي النقّي الطاهر العَلم

    His sublime traits spoke, and were not silent

    "This pious, pure, immaculate learned man"

  29. أهلاً بمحتكم الآراء فاصلها

    والقاصدون على جدواه تحتكم

    Greetings O judge of competing claims, their arbiter

    Those who intend his favor will submit to him

  30. كانَ الزمان لنا حرباً نخادعه

    فاليوم أُلقيَ فيما بيننا السلم

    Time was at war with us, deceiving us

    Today peace was cast between us

  31. وكان مغنى العلى عطلاً فقام به

    ركنٌ تطوف به العليا وتستلم

    The dwelling of the lofty was inactive, so a pillar

    Which the lofty circumambulate and take charge of stood for it

  32. يا حاكماً ما رصدنا نجم مقدمه

    إلا انجلت عن ليالي قصدنا الظلم

    O ruler, we observed no star precede his auspiciousness

    Save that the darkness of the nights we intended disappeared

  33. حدوتَ لي أملاً من بعد ما عرفت

    نفسي عن الناس إن ضنوا وإن كرموا

    You gave me hope after I knew

    My soul was aloof from people, whether they were generous or stingy

  34. وكان منطقيَ العربيّ ممتنعاً

    عن الأنام فلا عرب ولا عجم

    My Arabic expression was inaccessible

    To people, neither Arabs nor non-Arabs

  35. مالي وللشعر في حيٍّ وفي زمنٍ

    سيَّان فيه حسام الهند والجلم

    What is poetry to me in an age and time

    Where the Indian and Persian swords are equal?

  36. حتَّى إذا أشرقت علياك عاطية

    رأيت عقد القوافي كيف ينتظم

    Until your noble ones shone upon me, giving

    I saw the string of rhymes, how it is threaded

  37. هدمتَ بيت الغنى مما تجود به

    فاهنأ بأبيات مدحٍ ليس تنهدم

    You demolished with your gifts the house of wealth

    So delight in verses praising you that will not be demolished

  38. ما بعد علياك يحيي واصفٌ كَلِماً

    وليت لو وسعت أوصافك الكلم

    After you none will revive the words of a describer

    Would that the words sufficed to describe you

  39. لا عطّلت منك دنيانا ولا فقدت

    نسيم أنفاسك الأرواح والنسم

    You neither invalidated our worldly lives nor lost

    The breath of your life-giving breezes and zephyrs
