1. An age Fate struck; its calamities came wheeling round.

Claimed by the earth lies a virtuous man whose beneficence embraced all.

  2. Muʿṭī Allāh—prophetic in character were his virtues.

A sea flowed, bitter as colocynth—its honeyed draught was spat out.

  3. A meadow blossomed; a spring whose drinking places were sweet.

Master of hospitality, an open hand—his shoulder was Time’s right hand.

  4. A mountain of wisdom; at the public treasury, he was its keeper.

Lofty of summit, ever ascending—his descending onslaughts were feared.

  5. A full moon of splendor, a horizon whose stars shone forth.

A lion of the earth, a flame—his fingertips poured like rain.

  6. The star Suhā; celestial were his ranks.

The pride of humankind, Ḥaydar-like—his bounty embraced all.
