1. رَوى عن الرّيقِ منها الثّغْرُ والشّنَبُ

    معنىً عن الرّاحِ تَروي نظْمَهُ الحَبَبُ

    Her mouth and lips told tales of the soul's rapture,

    Meanings wafted gently like the winds' soft murmur.

  2. وحدّثَتْ عن نُفوسِ الصّيدِ وجنَتُها

    أخبارَ صِدقٍ يُقوّيها دمٌ كذِبُ

    And she told of the gazelles and their meadows fair

    True stories that even false blood could not impair.

  3. وأرسلَتْ للدُجى من فرعِها مثلاً

    تمثّلَتْهُ فُروعُ البانِ والعذَبُ

    To night's gloom she sent branches to portray

    Her image in the boughs at break of day.

  4. وجالَ ماءُ محيّاها فأوهَمَنا

    أنّ الصّباحَ غَديرٌ موجُهُ ذهَبُ

    The glitter of her water tricks the sight

    We think the dawn's a brook of golden light,

  5. بيضاءُ عن وجهِها في الجنحِ ما سفرَتْ

    إلّا وقامتْ لها الحِرباءُ ترتقِبُ

    When the kohl touches her bowed eyelids, it seems

    Her lashes dance under raven tresses' gleams.

  6. لم يَلقَها الليلُ إلّا دُهمُهُ صدرَتْ

    بيضَ الثّيابِ وغارتْ فوقَها الشُهُبُ

    The lovelorn sniff her trace till they swoon dead

    As violets bend when storm clouds loom overhead.

  7. ريمٌ بأحداقِها ليثٌ يَصولُ وفي

    أطواقِها ذنَبُ السِّرحانِ منتصِبُ

    Her cheeks in the saffron dawn are rich cream white

    Her hair through darkness is the Pleiads' starlight,

  8. إذا أصابَ غُبارُ الكُحْلِ مُقلتَها

    تكادُ ترقُصُ من أهدابِها العُضُبُ

    A lion with his savage wrath is she,

    Yet round her neck the lissome fawn dances free.

  9. مِن لحظِها لا يصونُ القِرْنُ مهجتَهُ

    ولا تُضَمُّ عليهِ البيضُ والسُّلُبُ

    If she bestows a kind or tender look

    Turtle-doves gather, warbling as in a nook,

  10. يحنو إليها حَمامُ البانِ حين يَرى

    منها القوامَ فيَشْدو وهْو مُكتئِبُ

    With her fair wrists the bangles' circlet small

    Seems like the sunburst at dawn's first pall,

  11. قد أيّدَتْ دولةَ المُرّانِ قامتُها

    وحكّمَتْها على سُلطانِها القُضُبُ

    Her beauty spot's a cunning thief who spread

    His stolen hoard, while blood in droplets shed,

  12. مَهاةُ خِدْرٍ سِباعُ الطّيرِ تألَفُها

    لعِلمِها بجُنوبٍ حَولَها تَجبُ

    Calmly upon her neck the earrings sway

    The bough coils up - a slithering snake are they!

  13. تخالُ سَمعاً لديها وهي أفئِدةٌ

    تهوي إليها وفيها الشوقُ يلتهِبُ

    As if her witching in the dawn's first shaft

    Bound men below while she in sunlight laughed!

  14. تُمسي العيونُ إذا مِن خِدرِها وردَتْ

    ماءَ الشّبابِ بماءِ الوردِ ينسكِبُ

    What race exists, from oceans' pearls to the

    Fount of life itself, where men did not flee

  15. للحُسنِ سرٌّ طواهُ في مراشِفِها

    أوحاهُ منه إليها النّحْلُ والعِنَبُ

    To her, what falling stars but the twined zone

    Around her waist, about the sun's bright throne?

  16. يظنّ أصداغَها الرائي إذا اِنسدلَتْ

    تتلو عَقارِبُها سِحراً فتنقلِبُ

    The hatred in her foes, the love in friends

    From that soft cheek its secret influence lends,

  17. كأنّ منها سِوارَ البِكر شمسُ ضُحىً

    شقّ الصّباحُ حَشاها فهْي تصطخِبُ

    They who love's nest would build high out of reach

    Must pluck the boughs hope twines about for each.

  18. والخالُ لصٌّ أميرُ الحسن أفرَشَهُ

    نطعَ الدِّماء وهُزّتْ فوقَه القُضبُ

    For her a lion tribe whose very cubs

    Roar for the fray while scimitars stay sheathed,

  19. تهوي على جيدِها الأقراطُ ساكنةً

    فيسْحَبُ الفرْعُ ثُعباناً فتضْطَربُ

    These mediaeval coats of mail still donned

    Show their white faces luminous as the morn,

  20. كأنّما في عَمودِ الصبحِ سحرَتُها

    تحت الدُجى في حِبالِ الشمس قد صُلِبوا

    Seeking in their fair features meaning bright

    The dewdrops find in love lyrics their delight,

  21. أيُّ القَبائِلِ من دُرِّ البحار إلى

    عَينِ الحياةِ سوى إنسانِها هرَبوا

    When bared blades they smile, like their eyes' dark ken,

    Though black the lashes, still no brows to pen!

  22. وأيُّ شُهْبٍ سوى ما في قلائِدها

    أمْسَتْ صُفوفاً حَوالَ الشمسِ تصطحِبُ

    They who in war's travail or peace stand guard

    Pounce at each faint sound swiftly on their prey.

  23. من خدِّها في قُلوبِ المُدنَفين لظىً

    وفي المُحبّينَ من أكفانِها نصَبُ

    Honour with them is guarded zealously

    They seldom sleep to keep her company,

  24. لم يسمك الحُسنُ بيتاً للهوى بحَشاً

    إلّا وكان له من فرعِها طُنُبُ

    With their life's blood they made their sacrament

    A musk-gazelle's soft cheek their monument,

  25. ولا بَنو المجدِ بيتاً للنّسيبِ بنَوْا

    إلّا لها وعليها سجفَهُ ضربوا

    Their coats are silks from India, faces dark

    In colour, while in race they're nobly stark,

  26. للّهِ أُسْدُ عَرينٍ من عَشيرَتها

    ترضى الصّوارِمُ عنهم كلّما غَضِبوا

    Unschooled, no scribing hand have they, but when

    They write, blood's their fluid ink in gold pen!

  27. غُرٌّ إذا اِنكشفَتْ عنهم ترائِكُهُم

    تحت الدّجُنّةِ من أقمارِها حُسِبوا

    They tamed the lightning's jagged angry tongue,

    Smiling as clouds through which they headlong plunged,

  28. تطلّبَ الدّرُّ معنىً من مَباسمِهِمْ

    فأدركَ النّظْمَ لمّا فاتَهُ الشّنَبُ

    And when death gapes to bare his greedy fangs

    They stitch his lips in one courageous pang!

  29. سُيوفُهُم في مَضاها مثلُ أعيُنِهم

    سُودُ الجُفونِ ولكنْ فاتَها الهُدُبُ

    Their valour is their hoard, their rule of might

    Is to usurp the rule, once won their right.

  30. قاموا لدَيْها وباتوا حولَها حرَساً

    إذا أحسّوا بطَيفٍ طارقٍ وثَبوا

    And if you wonder why women are close-fisted

    Look to Ali's open hand that never missed!

  31. عزّتْ لديهِم فحازَتْ كلّما ملَكوا

    حتّى لها النّومَ من أجفانِهم وهَبوا

    O Thou who gav'st such gifts as make her eyes

    The seat from which the shafts of kindness rise!

  32. قد صيّروا بالدّمِ المخطوبِ سُنّتَهُم

    خدَّ المَهاةِ وكفَّ الليثِ يختَضِبُ

    Were her fair traits equated with the stars

    She would outshine the noblest names of Mars!

  33. لحاظُهُم هِندَويّاتٌ ذوائِبُهُم

    زنجيّة اللّونِ إلّا أنّهُم عَرَبُ

    She is a cloud compassionately sad,

    Putting out the sun's fires as her tears patter,

  34. لم يُحسِنوا الخطّ إن راموا مُكاتبةً

    فوق الصّدورِ بأطرافِ القَنا كَتبوا

    She wonders much at thee, else would not gather

    Mirth's Sweet brooks, they flow when wonderment's the father.

  35. سلّوا البروقَ من الأجفانِ واِبتسَموا

    عنها وحادوا فقُلنا إنّهُم سُحُبُ

    Though named a monarch, yet like common wood

    One takes in kinds however noble the breed!

  36. إذا المنيّةُ عن أنيابِها كشرَتْ

    عضّوا عليها بذَيلِ النّقْعِ واِنتقَبوا

    In him two qualities combine and blend:

    Courage and wisdom both in measure true.

  37. شنّوا الإغارَ على نهبِ الجِمالِ وإذْ

    فيهِم أتَتْ وهَبوها كلّما نهَبوا

    With cool contempt he views the waving spears,

    Too trivial to arouse his concern or fears,

  38. يُعزى إلى حيّهم شُحُّ النساءِ كما

    إلى عليٍّ خِصالُ الجودِ تنتسبُ

    Power he views as nectar treacherously sweet,

    Its hollow reeds like pipes through which we eat.

  39. ربُّ الخصالِ اللّواتي في مصابِحِها

    يزهو القَريضُ وفيها تَشْرُقُ الخُطَبُ

    But for his judgment's strong and binding rope

    High place would lose its links and rungs would grope,

  40. حسبُ الكواكبِ لو منْ بعضِها حُسِبَتْ

    يوماً فينظِمُها في سِلكِها الحَبَبُ

    He guards the just, and drops pretenders' masks,

    So, foam reveals itself as foul or fair.

  41. خليفةٌ ورِثَ المعروفَ عن خلَفٍ

    فحبّذا خلَفٌ حازَ العُلا وأبُ

    In each firm limb some quality resides

    To create seas or raging storms provide.

  42. حرٌّ إذا اِفتخروا قومٌ بمرتبةٍ

    ففي أبيه وفيه تفخرُ الرُتَبُ

    War's terrors are to him sport's opening moves,

    His hand makes lightly wave the heavy spear,

  43. نجمٌ رحى الحربِ والرُكبانُ تعرفُه

    ودائراتُ اللّيالي أنّه القُطُبُ

    Though flames spread in the meadows where his horse

    Galloped, more wondrous still's the sparks' source!

  44. زَينُ الفِعالِ إذا مُدّاحُهُ اِمتدحوا

    حُسّانَها خلفَهُم في شِعرِهم نُسِبوا

    His spear tip is a star with tail of light

    Above it is the dark blue vault of night.

  45. لو أنّها مثّلَتْ في خَلقِه صُوَراً

    لنافستْهُنّ فيه الخُرَّجُ العرَبُ

    If that slim stem were grasped within his fist

    Ripe dates, thick-clustered, would fall ere he desist!

  46. فاقَ السّحابَ وأبكاها أسىً فلِذا

    تَذري الدموع وفيها الرّعدُ ينتحِبُ

    The scent of flowers from Kaba's veil blows sweet,

    The lineage of the Prophet makes musk complete.

  47. لولا تعجّبُها منه لما اِجتمعَتْ

    لا يحدُثُ الضّحكُ حتّى يحدُثَ العجَبُ

    What is dust before his essence pure? Compare

    Perfumes with him, their sweetness frail and spare!

  48. إن كان يشملُهُ لفظُ الملوكِ فقدْ

    يعمُّ بالجِنسِ نوعَ الصّندَلِ الخَشَبُ

    The verse of purity has truly rid

    His raiment of all filth - his sword lies hid!

  49. جسمٌ تركّب تركيبَ الطّباعِ به

    الحِلمُ والبأسُ والمعروفُ والأدبُ

    They were a folk to whom God gave life

    Revealed for them Chapter and Verse and Sign.

  50. يَغشى الرّماحَ العوالي غيرَ مُكترثٍ

    بها فيحسَبُ منها أنّه لعِبُ

    They are like angels, but in mortal guise,

    Upholders of faith beneath the open skies,

  51. رأى العُلا سُكّراً يحلو لطالبِه

    فظنّ أنّ أنابيبَ القَنا قصَبُ

    Sons come of glorious and generous strains

    Reared on weaned hearts' most noble milk sustained!

  52. لولاهُ جِسمُ العُلا أوصالُه اِفترقَتْ

    كأنّ آراءَهُ في ربْطِهِ عقَبُ

    If named "The Merciful" low they incline,

    Though raging battle rend their souls benign!

  53. يحمي الوليَّ ويقضي ذو النِفاقِ به

    كالماءِ يهلِكُ فيه مَنْ به الكلَبُ

    When viewed their flower-faces fill the sight

    As if they came from Precincts of the Light.

  54. في كلّ أنمُلةٍ منه وجارحةٍ

    يمُدُّ بحراً ويسطو فيلَقٌ لجِبُ

    Wherever they alight is Truth's own land,

    Wherever they depart she too must stand.

  55. قد أضحكَ التيهُ في أيديه صارمهُ

    وهزّ في راحتَيْهِ رُمحَهُ الطّرَبُ

    Sea of unstinted bounty, though winds blew

    They seethed and swayed, assailed, yet gentle grew,

  56. يسقي النجيع مواضيهِ فيُضرِمُها

    فاِعجبْ لنارٍ لها ماءُ الطُلا حطَبُ

    Their sweet scent when perceived could only mean

    They close to Holiness had ventured near.

  57. ذُؤابةُ الموتِ سمراءٌ بلهذَمِهِ

    كأنّه فوقَها نجمٌ له ذنَبُ

    The sober dawn still knows from what pure wine

    Their souls had light this starless dark to shine!

  58. لو هزّ جِذْعاً هشيماً في أنامِله

    يوماً لأوشَكَ منه يسقُطُ الرُّطَبُ

    As if they chose thee out of all mankind,

    Thee, Source of Glory, Excellence designed!

  59. يفوحُ نشرُ الكِبا من طَيّ بُردتِه

    وفي النبوّةِ منهُ يعبَقُ النّسبُ

    To follow them they left thee as their Guide,

    Then vanished, thee to Leadership applied.

  60. فأينَ طينُ الوَرى من طيبِ عُنصرِه

    وهل يُساوي رَطيبَ المُندُلِ الضّرَبُ

    Each land whose love from thee an instant passed

    Was left a lifeless corpse, all peace outcast.

  61. قد نزّهَتْ آيةُ التّطهيرِ ملبسَهُ

    من كلِّ نجْسٍ ولكنْ سيفُهُ جُنُبُ

    Deprived of thee, deprived its love must be,

    Nor Dust's soft cheek shows lively ermine's glee!

  62. من معشرٍ شرّفَ اللَّه الوجودَ بهم

    وأُنزِلَتْ فيهم الآياتُ والكتُبُ

    But for thy presence it had mourned their fate,

    As mourns the grass when rains have left it sere!

  63. همُ الملائِكُ إلّا أنّهم بشرٌ

    على الورى حُلَفاءٌ للهدى نُصِبوا

    If mete of what they did was thy deal due,

    Then for their sins they would have perished too!

  64. أبناءُ مجدٍ كرامٌ قبلَ ما فُطِموا

    عن الرّضاعِ لأخلافِ النّدى حَلَبوا

    But hoping on that Most Compassionate King

    Men court not His reward in anything.

  65. قومٌ إذا ذُكِرَ الرحمنُ من وجَلٍ

    لانوا وإنْ شهِدوا يومَ الوغى صعُبوا

    Though their solid ranks didst tear and tame,

    Against thee still they plotting came.

  66. غُرُّ الوجوهِ مصاليتٌ إذا نزلوا

    عنِ السّروجِ محاريبَ التّقى رَكِبوا

    Thy Light they thought to dim in deadly fight

    But God fulfilled in thee His Mighty Light!

  67. لا يسكُنُ الحقُّ إلّا حيثُ ما سكنوا

    وليس يذهبُ إلّا حيثُ ما ذهبوا

    The more they kindled flames themselves to burn

    The more against themselves those fires turn!

  68. بُحورُ جودٍ إذا هبّتْ رياحُ وغىً

    ماجوا ومجّوا وإنْ همُ سالَموا عَذُبوا

    God has shamed their gossip and their lies, else

    They had not earned Untruth's most wretched prize.

  69. إذا تنشّقْتَ ريّاهُم عرفْتَهُمُ

    بأنّهُم من جَنابِ القُدْسِ قد قَرُبوا

    Then bravely don the bride, High Place's veil,

    With blows that make the tall gazelles to quail!

  70. سَكرى إذا أصبحوا تَدري الصُحاةُ بهم

    من أيّ كاسٍ طَهورٍ بالدُجى شرِبوا

    And put on raiment dyed incarnadine

    In their own blood, while spears and arrows rain!

  71. كأنّهمُ يا عليَّ المجدِ إذ نظَروا

    تخيّروكَ منَ الأولادِ واِنتخَبوا

    Then joy when tidings spread like wildfire round

    That thy staunch lover shall to thee be bound!

  72. قد خلّفوكَ إماماً بعدَهم ومَضَوا

    وأبرزوكَ إِلى الإسلامِ واِحتجَبوا

    A day wherein the Friend shall glowing come,

    While on the foe shall settle fear and doom!

  73. تخوي العُروشُ إذا ما غِبْتَ عن بلدٍ

    حتّى تعودَ فيَحْيى ميْتُهُ الخَرِبُ

    Still swear to thee the spear tops glittering bright,

    And glorious on thy foemen pours their blight!

  74. لو لم تَعُدْ لم تعُدْ للحَوزِ بهجتُهُ

    ولا تورّدَ يوماً خدّهُ التَرِبُ

  75. لولا وجودُك فيه أهلُه هلَكوا

    كذاك يهلِكُ بعد الوابِلِ العُشُبُ

  76. لو كُنتَ مولىً تُجازيهِم بما اِقترَفوا

    من الذّنوبِ إذاً بادوا بِما كسبوا

  77. لم يُرجَ بالعَفو منهم فعلُ مكرمةٍ

    من عِندهم بل على الرّحمنِ محتَسبُ

  78. كسرْتَ جِبْتَهُم بالسيفِ فاِجتمعوا

    عليكَ أحزابُ ذاكَ الجِبْت واِعتصبوا

  79. همّوا بإطفاءِ نورِ المجدِ منك فلا

    فتمّ فيك ويأبى اللّهُ ما طَلبوا

  80. فكلّما أوقدوا ناراً بها اِحترقوا

    وأحدَثوا الحربَ فيهم يحدُثُ الحرَبُ

  81. أخزاهُمُ اللَّهُ أنّى يؤفَكون ولوْ

    حازوا الهُدى لطريقِ الإفكِ ما اِرتَكَبوا

  82. فدُمْ على رغمِهم بَعْلاً لبِكرِ عُلاً

    صِداقُها منكَ ضَرْبُ الهامِ والنُشُبُ

  83. واِلبَسْ قَميصاً من الإجلالِ في دمهِمْ

    قد دبّجَتْهُ المَواضي والقَنا السُّلُبُ

  84. واِسعَدْ بعيدٍ بنَحْسِ المُعتدينَ أتى

    مبشّراً أرسلَتْهُ نحوَكَ الحِقَبُ

  85. يومٌ وليُّكَ مسروراً بعودتِه

    وفي عدوّكَ منه الهمُّ والنّصَبُ

  86. فلا عصَتْكَ الليالي يا اِبنَ سيّدِها

    وحالَفَتْكَ على أعدائِكَ النّوَبُ
