ضربوا القِبابَ وطنّبوها بالقَنا

فمَحَوا بأنجُمِها مصابيحَ المُنا

They struck the domes and plastered them with mud

And erased its stars like lamps in Minā

وبَنوا الحِجالَ على الشّموسِ فوكّلوا

شُهْبَ السُّهاءِ برَجْمِ زوّارِ البِنا

They built walls upon the suns and tasked

The shooting stars with stoning the visitors of the structure

وجلَوْا بتيجانِ التّرائِبِ أوجُهاً

لو قابلَتْ جيشَ الدُّجنّةِ لاِنْثَنا

They veiled faces with horse-armor

Had it faced the army of darkness, it would have bent

وجرَوْا إلى الغايات فوقَ سوابِقٍ

لو خاضَ عِثيَرَها النهارُ لأوهَنا

They dragged banners to the zeniths above the excellent

Had the day traversed its plains, it would have weakened

للّهِ قومٌ في حبائِلِ حُسنِهم

قنصوا الكَرى لجفونِهم من عِندنا

By God, a people whose beauty snares glory

Sniped wishes for their eyes from us

غُرٌّ رَبارِبُهُم وأُسْدُ عرينِهم

سلّوا المَنونَ وأغمدوها الأجفُنا

Lions that roar for their dens and lions that guard their lair

They drew out swords and sheathed them in scabbards

إن زارَهُم خصْمٌ عليه نضوا الظُّبا

أو مُدنفٌ سلّوا عليهِ الأعيُنا

If an enemy visits them, they polish their swords

Or a slanderer, they sharpen their eyes

لم تلقَهُم إلّا وفاجاكَ الرّدى

من جَفنِ غُصْنٍ هُزَّ أو ريمٍ رَنا

You would not find them unless the calamity astonishes you

From the tremor of a branch brandished or an arrow launched

تُثْنى الظُّبا تحتَ السّوابِغِ منهُمُ

سُمرَ الرِّماحِ وفي الغلائِلِ أغصُنا

Tigers bow under their flowing garments

The tips of lances and branches in the thickets

من كلِّ محتجِبٍ تبرّجَ في العُلا

أو كُلِّ سافِرةٍ يحجِّبُها السّنا

From every veiled belle exposed in elevation

Or every voyager the years conceal

نُهدى بلَمعِ نُصولِهم لوصولِهم

ونرى ضِياءَ وجوهِهم فتصُدَّنا

We are alerted by the flashing of their weapons reaching them

And we see the glow of their faces so we are cautious

قسَماً بقُضْبِ قُدودِهم لخُدودِهم

كالوردِ إلّا أنّها لا تُجتَنى

I swear by the tenderness of their cheeks and their cheeks

Like roses except they cannot be plucked

كم مات خارجَ حيّهم من مُدنَفٍ

والروحُ منه لها وجودٌ في الفَنا

How many died outside their fence, slandered

While the soul still survives in demise

أسكنْتُهُم بأضالِعي فبُيوتُهم

بطُوَيلعٍ وشُموسُهُم بالمُنْحَنا

I housed them in my ribs so their homes

In munificence and their suns in eclipse

يا صاحِ إن جِئتَ الحجازَ فمِلْ بِنا

نحو الصّفا فهَوايَ أجمعُهُ هُنا

O companion, if you come to Hejaz, set out with us

To As-Safā for my love is all here

فتّشْ عَبيرَ ثَراهُ إن شِئتَ الثّرى

فالدُّرُّ حيثُ به نثَرْنا عتْبَنا

Seek the aroma of its soil if you wish for earth

For pearls are where we scattered our agony

واِنشُدْ به قلبي فإنّ مُقامَه

حيثُ المَقامُ به الحجونُ إلى مِنى

And recite to my heart there for its stance

Is where the heartsick halted in Minā

وسلِ المضاجِعَ إن شكَكْتَ فإنّها

منّا لَتَعْلَمُ عفّةً وتديُّنا

Ask the resting places if you doubt for they

Will inform you of chastity and piety

يا أهلَ مكّةَ ليت مَنْ فلَقَ النّوى

قسمَ المحبّةَ بالسّويّةِ بينَنا

O people of Mecca, if only He who cracked the seeds

Shared love equally between us

أطلقْتُمُ الأجسامَ منّا للشّقا

ولديكُمُ الأرواحُ في أسرِ العَنا

You freed your bodies from us to misery

And with you are our souls in the captivity of distress

أجفانُكُمْ غَصَبَتْ سَوادَ قُلوبِنا

وخُصورُكم عنهُ تعوِّضُنا الضّنا

Your gazes stole the darkness of our hearts

And your waists compensate us for its gloom

عن رِيّ غُلَّتِنا منعتُم زمزَماً

ورمَيتُمُ جَمَراتِ وجدِكمُ بِنا

You prevented Zamzam from us out of fear of our passion

And threw embers of your fervor at us

ظبياتُكُم أظمأنَنا وأُسودُكم

بجداوِلِ الفولاذِ تمنعُ وِرْدَنا

Your gazelles thirsted us and your lions

With sheets of steel deny us drink

ما بالُ فجرِ وصالِكُم لا ينجلي

وقُرونُكم سلبتْ ليالي بُعدِنا

Why does dawn of your union not emerge?

And your centuries stole the nights of our separation

أبِزَعْمِكُم أنّا يغيّرُنا النّوى

فوَحقِّكُم ما زالَ عنكمُ عهدُنا

Do you claim we alter our passion?

By your truth our covenant remains

أنخونُكُم بالعَهدِ وهْو أمانةٌ

قبضَتْ خَواطِرُنا عليهِ أرهُنا

We betray your covenant, which is entrusted

Our notions took it as pledges

أُخفي مودَّتَكُم فيظهَرُ سرُّها

والرّاحُ لا تَخفى إذا لَطُفَ الإنا

I conceal my love for you so its secret appears

And the soul cannot be hidden if the breeze is gentle

بِكُمُ اتّحدْتُ هَوىً ولو حيَّيْتُكُمْ

قلتُ السلامُ عليّ إذ أنتمْ أنا

Through you I fell in love so had I greeted you

I would say peace be upon me for you are me

للّه أيّامٌ على الخَيْفِ اِنقضَتْ

يا حبّذا لو أنّها رجعَتْ لنا

By God days on amusement elapsed

I wish they would return to us

أيّامُ لهْوٍ طالما بوُجوهِها

وضَحَتْ لنا غُرَرُ المحبّةِ والهَنا

Days of joy whenever by their faces

The intrigues of love and bliss appeared to us

وسَقى الحيا غدَواتِ لذّاتٍ غدَتْ

فيها غُصونُ الأُنسِ طيّبةَ الجَنا

And the life watered trysts of pleasures that were

In which the branches of company turned aromatic

وظِلالَ آصالٍ كأنّ نسيمَها

لأبي الحسينِ يهُبُّ في أرَجِ الثَنا

And the shades of friends as if their breeze

For Abul Hussein blows gently through the branches

ملِكٌ جلالتُه كَفَتْهُ وشأنُه

عن زينةِ الألقابِ أو حَلْيِ الكنى

A king whose might curbed him and whose rank

Turned him from the ornaments of titles or jewelry of teknonyms

سمْحٌ إِذا أثنى النّباتُ على الحيا

قصدَ المَجازَ بلفظِهِ ولهُ عَنا

Generous, if vegetation praised life

He interprets it figuratively though it is literal

قِرْنٌ لديه قِرى الجُيوشِ إذا به

نزلوا فُرادى الظّعنِ أو حِزبٍ ثُنا

A spear that armies of cavalry, if gathered by it

Alight as individuals of charging or a group

للفخرِ جَرْحاهُ تلَذُّ بضَرْبه

والبُرُّ يُرضي الجُرْبَ في ألَم الهَنا

The gashes are delighted by its strike for glory

And innocence satisfies harm in the pain of passion

تُمسي بأفواهِ الجِراحِ حرابُه

تُثْني عليه تظنُّهُنَّ الألسُنا

Its wars at the mouths of wounds

Praise it thinking they are tongues

سجدَتْ لعزْمتِه النِصالُ أمَا تَرى

فيهنّ من أثَرِ السُجودِ الإنحِنا

The blades prostrated to its resolve - do you not see

In them the mark of prostration, bent?

وهوَتْ عواليه الطِعانَ فأوشَكَتْ

قبلَ الصّدورِ زجاجُها أن تطعَنا

Its lofty spearheads nearly

Stab the chests before the bodies they pierce

بيتُ القصيد من المُلوكِ وإّما

يأبى عُلاه بوزنِهم أن يُوزَنا

A house of glory from kings or else

Its loftiness refuses to be weighed by their weight

يَصبو إلى نُجُبِ الوفودِ بسَمْعِه

طَرَباً كما يَصبو التّريفُ إلى الغِنا

It pours towards the noble delegations in hearing

Yearning like overflow pours to song

متسرِّعٌ نحو الصّريخِ إذا دعا

مترفِّقٌ فيه عن الجاني وَنا

Hastening to the scream when called

Cautious in it from the offender and protector

فالوُرْقُ تُشفِقُ منه يُغرِقُها النّدى

فلِذاكَ نلجأُ في الغُصونِ لتأمَنا

So leaves pour down dew in fear of it

Thus we resort to branches to be safe

والنارُ من فزَعِ الخُمودِ بصوبِه

فزِعَتْ إلى جوفِ الصخورِ لتكْمُنا

And the fire in dread of death by it

Fled to the core of boulders to hide

والمُزْنُ من حسدٍ لجودِ يَمينه

تَبكي أسىً وتظنُّها لن تَهتِنا

And the treasuries from envy of its open-handedness

Weep in woe and think they will never be rich

بطلٌ تكادُ الصّاعِقاتُ بأرضِه

حذَراً لصوتِ الرّعدِ أن لا تُعلِنا

A hero whom thunder in his land nearly

Fears the sound of thunder so it does not declare us

لو أكرَمَ البحرُ السّحابَ كوَفدِه

للدُّرِّ عنّا كادَ أن لا يخْزُنا

If the sea honored the clouds like its delegation

Of pearls, it nearly lacked storing us

أو يَقتَفيهِ البدرُ في سعي العُلا

لم يرضَ في شرفِ الثُريّا مَسكنا

Or the moon sought it in ascension

It would not be pleased with the honor of the Pleiades as residence

أو بِعْنَ أنفُسَها الأهلّةُ صفقةً

منه بنعلِ حذائِه لن تُغبَنا

Or the crescent sold themselves to him for the price

Of his shoe’s strap, they would not profit from us

حُرِسَتْ عُلاهُ بالظُّبا ففُروجُها

تحكي البُروجَ تحصُّناً وتزيُّنا

Guarded is its glory with tigers so its preserves

Tell of constellations in fortification and beauty

لا يُنكِرَنّ الأفْقُ غبطَتَهُ لها

أوَ ليسَ قد لَبسَ السّوادَ تحزُّنا

The horizon does not deny its fortune for them

Or has it not worn black mourning clothes?

تقفُ المنيّةُ في الزّحامِ لديه لا

تسعى إلى المهجاتِ حتّى يأذَنا

Death stands amidst the crowds by it not

Seeking the brains until it permits

نفذَتْ إرادَتُه وألقَتْ نحوَهُ الد

دُنيا مقاليدَ العُلا فتمكّنا

His will prevailed and the world

Cast the reins of elevation to it and enabled

فإذا اِقتضى إحداثَ أمرٍ رأيُه

لو كان ممتنِعَ الوجودِ لأمكَنا

So when its opinion demanded an impossible matter

If it were improbable to exist, it would enable

يا مَنْ بطَلعَتِهِ يَلوحُ لنا الهُدى

وبيُمنِ رؤيتِه نَزيدُ تيمُّنا

O you whose emergence heralds guidance

And good omen is in seeing you we gain certainty

ما الروحُ منذُ رحلْتَ إلّا مُهجةٌ

بكَ تُيِّمَتْ فخُفوقُها لن يَسْكُنا

The soul since you traveled is not but anguished

Made an orphan by you so its throbs will not calm

أضناهُ طولُ نَواكَ حتّى أنّه

دلّ النحولُ على هَواهُ وبرهَنا

Loss emaciated it for so long that indeed

Emaciation indicates its passion and proves

أخفى الهُدى لمّا اِرتحَلْتَ منارُه

فحلَلْتَ فيه فلاحَ نوراً بيّنا

It hid the guidance when its beacon departed

You lodged in it so radiance emerged clear

قد كنتَ فيه وكان صُبحاً مشرِقاً

حتّى اِرتحلْتَ فعاد ليلاً أدكَنا

You were in it and it was a rising dawn

Until you departed and it returned pitch darkness

سلبَ البلا مُذ غِبْتَ ملبَسَ أرضِه

فكسَتْهُ أوبَتُكَ الحريرَ ملوَّنا

After you left, afflictions permitted the enemy

From it citadels and you came to it so it fortified

فارَقْتَه فأباحَ بعدَك للعِدى

منهُ الفُروجَ وجِئتَه فتحصّنا

It became sorrowful due to your absence for youth

And now it became a source of joy for happiness

أمسى لبُعدِكَ للصّبابةِ مَحزَناً

والآن أصبحَ للمسرّةِ مَعْدِنا

The Beneficent never made His lands desolate of you

Ever and its glory did not abandon residence

لا أوحشَ الرحمنُ منكَ رُبوعَهُ

أبداً ولا برحَتْ لمجدِكَ موطِنا

My master, the enemy did not cease subjected to you

Terrified and time submitted to you so it yielded

مولاي لا برِحَ العِدى لكَ خُضَّعاً

رَهَباً ودانَ لك الزّمانُ فأذْعنا

If they asked you then treat them well

For the satisfaction of God for He was good to us

هبْ أنّهم سألوكَ فاِحسِنْ فيهم

لِرِضا الإلهِ فإنّه بكَ أحسَنا

Do not be surprised if you are tested by their deceit

The freeman is tested by the sons of fornication

لا تعجبنّ إذا اِمتُحِنْتَ بكَيدِهم

فالحُرُّ ممتَحَنٌ بأولادِ الزِّنا

So restrain your sight with patience, vigilant

And collect your opinion consciously, perceptive

فاِغضُضْ بحِلمِكَ ناظراً متيقّظاً

واِجْمَعْ لرأيكِ خاطِراً متفطِّنا

And forgive the mistake of one who, if an excuse he seeks

And he is eloquent, turns coward, scrawny tomorrow

واِغفِرْ خطيئَةَ مَنْ إذا عُذْراً بَغى

وهْو الفَصيحُ غَدا جباناً ألْكَنا

I know your absence from me is a sin but I say

Lamenting, separation from you is not trivial as suffering

إنّي لأعْلَمُ أنّ عنكَ تخلُّفي

ذَنْبٌ ولكنّي أقولُ مُضمِّنا

Glory continues rejoicing in you and not

Did your separation bring gloom upon elevation, hardships of life

أضحى فراقُك لي علَيْهِ عُقوبةً

ليس الّذي قاسَيْتُ منه هيّنا

لا زالَ فيكَ المجدُ مبتهِجاً ولا

فَجعَتْ بفُرقَتِكَ العُلا نُوَبُ الدُّنا
