1. بزَغَتْ بالظّلامِ شَمسُ الدُيورِ

    فأرَتْ بالشتاءِ وقتَ الهَجيرِ

    The sun of eras rose in the darkness

    It showed in winter, the time of departure

  2. وشَهِدنا الهَباءَ كالنّقْعِ لَيلاً

    حَولَها إذ بدَتْ منَ البلّورِ

    We witnessed the dust like dripping at night

    When it appeared from crystal

  3. وأرَتْنا السّماءَ ذاتَ اِحْمِرارٍ

    ومَحا نورُها السّوادَ الأثيري

    We saw the sky reddened

    Its light erased the endless darkness

  4. فحسِبْنا النُجومَ فيها فُصوصاً

    منْ عَقيقٍ وجِرْمَها من حَريرِ

    We reckoned the stars in it to be gems

    Of carnelian and their bodies of silk

  5. وغشَتْ في شُعاعِها الأرضَ طُرّاً

    فجرى ذَوْبُ لَعلِها في البُحورِ

    In its rays, dew covered the ground

    So its melting ran in the seas

  6. نارُ راحٍ ذكيّةٌ قد أصارَتْ

    كرةَ الزّمهَريرِ حرَّ السّعيرِ

    A gentle, bright fire that made

    The sphere of murmuring hot like embers

  7. خفِيَتْ من لَطافةِ الجرمِ حتّى

    لا ترى في وِعائِها غيرَ نُورِ

    It was hidden due to the delicacy of its body

    So that nothing can be seen in its container but light

  8. باينَ الماءُ لونَها فالأواني

    كالمُساوي لها على المَشهورِ

    Water changed its color so utensils

    Became like it commonly among the renowned

  9. تملأُ المُحتَسي ضِياءً إلى أنْ

    تنظر العينُ سِرّهُ بالضّميرِ

    It fills the drinker with radiance until

    The eye sees its secret by the conscience

  10. لو حَساها بَنو زُغاوَةَ يوماً

    من سَناها لَلُقّبوا بالبُدورِ

    If the tribe of Zughba sensed it one day

    From its brilliance, they would be titled al-Budur

  11. ذاتُ نورٍ إذا جَلَتْها سُحَيْراً

    في زُجاجِ الكُؤوسِ كفُّ المُديرِ

    It is a light, if Suhayr brought it out

    In the glass of cups, like the director's fists

  12. خِلتَهُ بالفَضيخِ مرّ جميعاً

    ثمّ بالنارِ خاضَ بعدَ المُرورِ

    I passed its bitterness with medicine, then

    With fire, after crossing the bridge

  13. صاحِ قد راحَ وقتُنا فاِغتَنِمه

    واِنتَهِبْ فرصةَ الزّمانِ الغَيورِ

    My friend, our time is passing so seize it

    And take advantage of the opportunity of jealous time

  14. أَتخيّلْتَ أنّ وقتَك ليلٌ

    سَفهاً إنّ ذا دُخانُ البَخورِ

    Do you imagine your time is a night?

    Nonsense! This is the smoke of incense

  15. فلقد شجّ في عَمودِ سَناهُ

    فلَق الصبحِ هامةَ الدّيجورِ

    It ripped through the pillar of its brilliance

    Splitting the dawn, the resolver of darkness

  16. وبُحورُ الظّلامِ غُرن وعامت

    حُوتُها من ضِيائِه في غَديرِ

    The seas of darkness moaned and its

    Whales roared within its reservoir

  17. وغدَتْ تقطُفُ الأقاحَ يَداهُ

    منْ رِياضِ المَلابِ والكافورِ

    It rose to pluck berries with its hands

    From the gardens of malabathrum and camphor

  18. وغَدا الكَفُّ والذّراعُ خَضيباً

    وبَدا بالدُجى نُصولُ القَتيرِ

    The palm and forearm became bloody

    And the rising of stars of the black night appeared

  19. واِنثَنى القلبُ خافِقاً إذ تجلّى

    مُصْلتاً صارِم الهِلالِ المُنيرِ

    The heart fluttered when the crescent appeared

    Unsheathing, with its bright blade bare

  20. وشَدا الديكُ هاتِفاً وتغنّى ال

    وُرقُ بالأيكِ خاطِباً للطّيورِ

    The rooster cried loudly and the

    Leaves sang to the birds

  21. وبَدا الطَّلعُ ضاحكاً ثمّ أهدى الط

    طَلُّ منظومهُ إِلى المنثورِ

    The buds appeared laughing, then the

    Branches delivered their stringed arrangement to the scattered

  22. فاِصطَبحها على خُدودِ العَذارى

    واِسقِنيها على أقاحِ الثغورِ

    Give it to me in the morning on the cheeks of maidens

    And serve it to me on the berries of the lips

  23. بينَ أبناءِ مجلسٍ لم يَزالوا

    بين خُضر الرّياضِ بيض النُحورِ

    Among the sons of a session who still

    Dwell among the greens of gardens and fawn-colored blossoms

  24. كلّما فاكَهوا الجليسَ بلفظٍ

    نظَمَتْهُ الحبَابُ فوقَ الخُمورِ

    Whenever they entertained a companion with words

    The bubbles arranged it over the wines

  25. طلبوا المجدَ بالرّماحِ ونالوا

    بالظُبى هامةَ المحلِّ الأثيرِ

    They sought glory with spears and attained

    The eminent turban of high rank

  26. صبيةٌ زفّها الصّباءُ اِرتياحاً

    للمَلاهي على بِساطِ السُرورِ

    Young girls marched happily

    To the amusements, on the carpet of bliss

  27. وبُدورٌ منَ السُقاةِ تُعاطي

    في كُؤوسِ النُضارِ شمسَ العَصيرِ

    And young servants who pass

    Glasses of nectar, sun of juice

  28. ما سعتْ بالمُدامِ إلّا أرَتنا

    قُضُبَ البانِ في هِضابِ ثَبيرِ

    They never aspired with wine except we saw

    Rod of ginger on the meadows of Thabir

  29. كلُّ ظَبيٍ عزيزِ شكلٍ غَرير

    يفضحُ البدرَ بالجَمال الغَزيرِ

    Every precious gazelle, charming and flirtatious

    Who shames the moon with abundant beauty

  30. بل أصمٌّ وشاحُهُ منطقيٌّ

    صحّ في جَفنِه حِسابُ الكُسورِ

    Even the deaf, his logic is sound

    Arithmetic is awake in his eyelids

  31. سُكّريٌّ رُضابُهُ كَوثَريٌّ

    جنّةٌ عذّبَ الأنامَ بِحُورِ

    One intoxicated, his talk ecstatic

    A paradise who pleased people with maidens

  32. كلّما هبّ بالمُدامِ نَشاطاً

    كسّلَ النومُ جَفنُه بالفُتورِ

    Whenever he was spirited with wine

    Sleep weighed down his eyelids with languor

  33. فرعُهُ والوِشاحُ سارا فهذا

    كَ اِغتدى مُتهِماً وذا بالغُوَيرِ

    His branch and turban went on, so this one

    Is as if he wore suspicion, and that in confusion

  34. كم غَزا الصبر باللّحاظِ كما قدْ

    غزَتِ الشوسَ أنصُلُ المَنصورِ

    How much patience Ghaza pierced with glances

    As Ghazat al-Shawus, the renowned swords

  35. يومَ غازَتْ جِيادُهُ آلَ فَضْلٍ

    بِلُهامٍ على الكُماةِ قَديرِ

    The day his steeds raided the clan of Fadl

    With resolute courage against the protectors, prevailing

  36. كلما سارَ بالظُبى والعَوالي

    بعثَ الذُعرَ قبلَهُ بالصُدورِ

    Whenever he marched with the gazelles and heights

    He evoked terror in hearts before him

  37. جحفلٌ يقتلُ الجنينَ إذا ما

    سارَ في الأرض وقعُهُ في النُحورِ

    A horde that kills the fetus when it

    Marched in the land, its impact in the pits

  38. لجِبٌ من دويّه الخلقُ كادوا

    يخرجوا للحسابِ قبلَ النُشورِ

    With its loud cry, people almost

    Emerged for judgement before the resurrection

  39. مارَ فيهِ السماء والأرضُ مادتْ

    وتَنادَتْ جِبالُها للمَسيرِ

    The sky and earth passed through it surrendering

    And its mountains called each other to march

  40. سارَ وهناً عليهم وأقامت

    خيلُهُ بالنّهارِ حتّى العَصيرِ

    He marched weakened upon them and his

    Horses spent the day with them until afternoon

  41. وأتى منهلَ الدُّوَيرِقِ ليلاً

    وسرى منْ مَعينه من سُحَيْرِ

    And the desert turned over them

    With the cycle of its legs like beetles

  42. وأتى الطيبَ والدُجَيلَ نَهاراً

    تقتَفيهِ الأسودُ فوقَ النسورِ

    It reached the Euphrates at night

    And flowed from its spring generously

  43. وغدا يطّوي القِفارَ إلى أنْ

    نشرَتْ خيلُهُ ثَراءَ الثُغورِ

    It reached al-Tayyib and al-Dujayl in the morning

    With lions pursuing it over the eagles

  44. واِنثنَتْ تَقلِبُ الفَلاةَ عليهمِ

    بمَداري قوائمٍ كالدَّبورِ

    He threw them there so they became

    With no helper other than his pardon

  45. وغدَت عُوَّماً بدجلةَ حتّى

    صار لُجّيُّ مائِها كالأسيرِ

    They submitted wealth and families and fled

    Escaping with themselves in every cave

  46. وأتت بالضُحى الجزيرةَ تُردي

    بأُسودٍ تَروعُها بالزّئيرِ

    If he willed, he would have killed them, they found

    No escape from his famous sword

  47. فرَماها بها هُناكَ فأضحَوا

    ما لهُم غيرَ عَفوهِ من نَصيرِ

    Where can the gazelles seek refuge in the caves from one

    Who hunts necks from the bow of Thabeer

  48. أسلَموا المالَ والعِيالَ وولّوا

    هرَباً بالنفوسِ في كلِّ غوْرِ

    Their hearts were terrified so they became

    Between their bowels like the dead in graves

  49. وهوَ لو شاءَ قتلَهُمْ ما أصابوا

    مهرَباً من حُسامهِ المَشهورِ

    Ignorant, mad and lost were they

    When he confused them with conceit

  50. أينَ منجى الظِباءِ بالغورِ ممّنْ

    يَقنِصُ العُصْمَ من قِنانِ ثَبيرِ

    They claimed in their lands they would not be reached

    By the people of the plateau in the valleys of carnelian

  51. ذُعِرَتْ منهمُ القُلوبُ فأمسَتْ

    بينَ أحشائهمْ كمَوتى القُبورِ

    He denied their claim and marched against them

    And threw them with his victorious army

  52. سَفَهاً منهمُ عصوْهُ وتِيهاً

    وضَلالاً رَماهمُ بالغُرورِ

    A king, whenever he marched seeking

    He reckoned the entire earth like a flea

  53. زعموا في بلادهمْ لن يُنالوا

    من بَوادي العَقيقِ أهلُ السّديرِ

    Difficulty became insignificant to him

    And the grand was like the low

  54. فنفى زعمَهُم وسارَ إليهمْ

    ورَماهُمْ بجَيشهِ المَنصورِ

    We have not ceased being in clouds of his bounty

    That grow pearls in the gardens of the poor

  55. ملكٌ كلّما سرى لطِلابٍ

    يحسَبُ الأرضَ كلّها كالنقيرِ

    O Abu Hashim al-Muzaffar, do not cease

    Repelling the enemy for ages

  56. هوّنَ البأسُ عندهُ كلَّ شيءٍ

    والعظيمُ العظيمُ مثلُ الحقيرِ

    You have been rewarded with pride a position

    The spears built over the crossings

  57. لم نزلْ من نَواله في سَحابٍ

    يُنبتُ الدرَّ في رياض الفَقيرِ

    Creatures Submit to you until

    The mighty becomes like the pleading refugee

  58. يا أبا هاشمَ المُظفَّر لا زلْ

    تَ تُغيرُ العدوَّ طولَ الدُهورِ

    And you have provided people from you with grace

    That makes the wealthy like the destitute

  59. فلقد جُزْتَ بالفَخارِ مَقاماً

    شيّدَتْهُ الرِماحُ فوقَ العبورِ

    Remain for eternity, for as long as the moon appears treasure

    To the poor and reconciler of the broken

  60. ذلّتِ الكائناتُ منكَ إلى أنْ

    صارَ منها العزيزُ كالمُستجيرِ

  61. وعمَمْتَ العِبادَ منكَ بفَيضٍ

    صيّرَ الزّاخراتِ مثلَ السُتورِ

  62. دمتَ بالدهرِ ما بَدا البدرُ كَنزاً

    لِفَقيرٍ وجابِراً لكَسيرِ
