1. يَمَّمتُ مِن عَلياكَ خَيرَ مُيَمِّمٍ

    وَحَلَلتُ مِن مَغناكَ دارَ مُخَيَّمِ

    I sought asylum in the best sanctuary, from your heights,

    And I pitched my tent in your fertile land.

  2. فَخَلَعتُ عَن عُنُقي حَميلَةَ ضارِمٍ

    وَأَرَحتُ نَفسي مِن حُمالَةَ مَغرَمِ

    So I took off the heavy necklace of worries,

    And I comforted my soul from the loads of passion.

  3. وَنَزَلتُ مِن خِصبٍ بِأَمرَعَ مَنزِلٍ

    وَحَلَلتُ مِن أَمنٍ بِرَأسِ يَلَملَمِ

    I descended into fertility at the best dwelling,

    And I arrived in security at the head of a restless camel.

  4. وَلَئِن تَهادَتنِيَ المَطايا وَالسُرى

    وَعُبابُ لُجَّةِ كُلِّ لَيلٍ مُظلِمِ

    And even if dangers and journeys tired me,

    And the darkness of a mournful night overwhelmed me.

  5. فَلَقَد سَكَنتُ وَلِلَّيالي جَولَةٌ

    كُحِلَت بِهَبوَتِها عُيونُ الأَنجُمِ

    Yet I settled while the nights had their rounds,

    Adorned in their dreaminess, the eyes of the stars.

  6. وَكَفى اِحتِماءَ مَكانَةٍ وَصِيانَةٍ

    أَنّي عَلِقتُ بِذِمَّةٍ مِن مَريَمِ

    It suffices as protection of status and chastity,

    That I clung to the secure pledge of Maryam.

  7. ذاتِ الأَمانَةِ وَالدِيانَةِ وَالتُقى

    وَالخُلقِ الأَشرَفِ وَالطَريقِ الأَقوَمِ

    Of trustworthiness, religion and piety,

    And the most noble character and straightest path.

  8. ذاتِ الجَلالَةِ وَالجَزالَةِ وَالنُهى

    وَالبَيتِ الأَرفَعِ وَالنِصابِ الأَكرَمِ

    Of majesty, bounty, and deterrence from vice,

    And the most elevated house and the most generous pillar.

  9. مِن أُسرَةٍ يَتَلَثَّمونَ إِلى الوَغى

    يَومَ الحَفيظَةِ بِالعَجاجِ الأَقتَمِ

    From a family who at the time of tribulation

    Bite their moustaches with the darkest gall.

  10. مِن بَيتِ عِزٍّ مِن نِبالٍ حَيثُ لا

    تُلقى بِغَيرِ مُسَوَّدٍ وَمُعَظَّمِ

    From the house of glory and spears where none

    Is met except with veneration and magnification.

  11. مُتَهَلِّلٍ لِلطارِقينَ بَشاشَةً

    أَو ضارِبٍ رَأسَ الكَمِيِّ المُعلَمِ

    Welcoming visitors joyfully

    Or hitting the head of the roaming spy.

  12. طَلقٍ يَشِفُّ لِثامُهُ عَن كَوكَبٍ

    مُتَأَلِّقٍ في الحادِثِ المُتَجَهِّمِ

    A knight whose brilliance his helmet reveals

    Shining during events that make men frown.

  13. مُتَقَدِّمٍ في صَدرِ كُلِّ كَتيبَةٍ

    شَهباءَ يَندى جانِباها بِالدَمِ

    Advancing in the chest of every brave battalion,

    Whose flanks his sword paints with blood.

  14. يَثني بِها عِطفَيهِ كُلُّ مُثَقَّفٍ

    لَدنٍ وَيَضحَكُ كُلُّ أَبيَضَ مِخذَمِ

    At whom every cultured person smiles

    And every pale-faced frowns.

  15. إِن جادَ جادَ هُناكَ حاتِمُ طَيِّئٍ

    أَو صالَ صالَ رَبيعَةُ بنُ مُكَدَّمِ

    If Hatim Tai is generous, he is generous over there,

    Or if Rabia Ibn Mukaddam contends, he contends.

  16. وَإِنِ اِستَجَرتَ بِهِ اِستَجَرتَ بِهَضبَةٍ

    مَأوى الطَريدِ بِها وَكَنزُ المُعدَمِ

    And if you seek refuge through him, you seek it in an impenetrable

    Refuge of the fugitive and treasure of the destitute.

  17. لاتَعثُرُ الأَحياءُ دونَ طُروقِهِ

    إِلّا بِشَلوَةِ لَهذَمٍ أَو ضَيغَمِ

    None of the living stumble at its thresholds

    Except the stumblings of the lame or the blind.

  18. تُنمى إِلَيهِ مِنَ الحَرائِرِ حُرَّةٌ

    تَغنى بِسُؤدُدِ ذاتِها أَن تَنتَمي

    A free woman approaches him, so wealthy

    She disdains to belong to other clans.

  19. مَشهورَةٌ في الفَضلِ قِدماً وَالنُهى

    وَالنُبلِ شُهرَةَ غُرَّةٍ في أَدهَمِ

    Famous for her nobility and chastity,

    As famous as a charming doe in Dahm.

  20. جاءَت بِها الغُرُّ الكِرامُ كَريمَةً

    لا تَشرَئِبُّ إِلى بَياضِ الدِرهَمِ

    The generous stars brought her to him generously,

    She who never longs for the whiteness of dirhams.

  21. سِطَةُ القِلادَةِ رِفَعَةً وَمَكانُها

    مِن كُلِّ مَعلاةٍ مَكانُ اللَهذَمِ

    The necklace sits high around her neck,

    As a new moon sits high in the horizon.

  22. تولي الأَيادي عَن يَدٍ نَزَلَ النَدى

    مِنها بِمَنزِلَةِ المُحِبِّ المُكَرَّمِ

    All hands refrain like those of a respected lover,

    From the hand the dew descends from its clouds.

  23. مِن كُلِّ عارِفَةٍ كَما اِنسَجَمَ الحَيا

    وَاِفتَرَّ بارِقُ مُزنَةٍ عَلى مَبسِمِ

    It attracted to her the free praise of Āqilah,

    More radiant than the frowning clouds.

  24. عَلِقَت بِها حُرَّ الثَناءِ عَقيلَةٌ

    أَندى يَدَينِ مِنَ الغَمامِ المُرزِمِ

    A generosity at which mounts kneel down in travel

    From a helper, the winds blow to.

  25. جودٌ تَنوءُ بِهِ الرِكابُ عَلى السَرى

    مِن مُنجِدٍ أَرجِ الرِياحِ وَمُتهِمِ

    The green grass sprouts fresh with it,

    And the tail of the wind grows fragrant breaths.

  26. يَندى بِهِ النَبتُ الهَشيمُ نَضارَةً

    وَيَنِمُّ ذَيلُ الريحِ طيبَ تَنَسُّمِ

    It wandered the countries without glooming,

    In one condition, facing towards the eternal.

  27. خَبَطَ البِلادَ يَمُرُّ غَيرَ مُغَيِّمٍ

    في حالَةٍ وَيَصوبُ صَوبَ مُدَيِّمِ

    And it unshackles the fetters of the captives of destitution,

    And the eloquent tribesman with the incomprehensible accent.

  28. وَيَفُكُّ مِن أَغلالِ أَسرى فاقَةٍ

    وَفَصيحَ قَومٍ في مَقادَةِ أَعجَمِ

    The free were ruled by the noblest woman,

    And the scant handed stretched to her his empty palm.

  29. مَلَكَت بِهِ الأَحرارَ أَكرَمُ حُرَّةٍ

    بَسَطَ المُقِلُّ لَها يَمينَ المُعدَمِ

    Al-Quraishi carried praise of her, and he only

  30. حَمَلَ الثَناءَ بِها القَريضُ وَإِنَّما

    حَمَلَ الحَديثَ رِوايَةً عَن مُسلِمِ
