1. Lo, the bird spoke so eloquently that it delivered an oration,

    and the bough fluttered for it until it trembled.

  2. Then lean in delight between a shade that stirs,

    fresh and lush, and water gushing there.

  3. And ask, in the garden, for the sister of desire,

    and draw near with aged wine, the mother of rapture;

  4. and a laden bearer among the daughters of the lance-reed—

    slender maidens bearing green tassels.

  5. Leaf-clad, she stands in for a cheek’s down,

    and, blooming, laughs to reveal fresh, gleaming teeth.

  6. In the breath of the east wind, dew gathers upon her:

    an emerald that has borne golden fruit.

  7. At times her breaths waft perfume,

    and at times you court her from close at hand;

  8. then in one mood she smiles with delight,

    and looks reproachfully in anger.
