1. And a graceful, supple youth with sweet, dusk-dark lips,

    kindles embers upon his cheeks.

  2. I spent the night in intimate converse with him; no suspicion

    concerning him clung to me, nor any sin.

  3. And night was a curtain let down between us,

    embroidered by crimson stars.

  4. I weep, and he moves me to sorrow: upon my cheek

    is water; upon his cheeks, wine.

  5. And in him I read Beauty as a sura

    whose ten verses came from his face.

  6. All night he gave me drink beneath the darkness:

    north-wind-chilled wine that the rain mingled.

  7. And Night smiled, baring his face,

    as though he were the smiling mouth in hers.
