وافى لَنا وَلَهُ صَحيفَةُ صَفحَةٍ

جَعَلَ العِذارُ بِها يَسيلُ مَدادا

There came to us and him a page of a book

On which regret made its ink freely flow

مُتَجَهِّماً ثَكِلَ الشَبابِ كَأَنَّما

نَشَرَ العِذارُ عَلى الشَبابِ حِدادا

Frowning, as if regretting the passing of youth,

Spreading grief over youth like mourning clothes
