1. جزت حدَّ المديح قولاً وفعلا

    فرويداً يا ابنَ الكرام ومهلا

    You have reached the utmost limit of praise in words and deeds,

    So take it easy, O son of nobility.

  2. أن تجلَّى لك الحسود فكم جلَّيـ

    ـتَ في حلبة المعالي وصلَّى

    If the envious have appeared to you, how much have you

    Appeared in the arena of glories and prayed.

  3. أنت أندى كفّاً وأحسن للأيـ

    ـام منهُ فرعاً وأشرف أصلا

    You are the most generous handed and the best

    For the days - a branch from it and the noblest origin.

  4. أنت غوثُ الأنام غيثُ أوا

    م الخلق خلّى سماحه حيث حلَّا

    You are the savior of mankind, a rain for the times

    When creation was in dire need and you came to provide relief.

  5. واهب الألف وهي صفرٌ وبيضٌ

    والمئين الجياد خليلاً وإبلا

    The grantor of thousands while they are still nothing,

    And hundreds of gallant horses and camels.

  6. قد حويتَ البلاد قرباً وبعداً

    وملكتَ الزمان حزناً وسهلاً

    You have contained both near and distant lands,

    And you have ruled times of sadness and ease.

  7. حين خففت عن بني الدهر أعباءَ

    همومٍ منها تحمَّلت ثقلا

    When you relieved the children of life

    Of worries, some of which you took as a burden.

  8. أنتَ نصرٌ يا نصرُ أن يدعك الملـ

    ـك لأمرٍ أمرٍ يوافك نصلا

    You are victory, O Victory, so if the King calls you

    For any matter - you readily fulfill.

  9. أنت كالسمهري هزَّ بكفي با

    ترٍ والحسام سلَّ فشلاً

    You are like Al-Samhari brandishing in the battle,

    Unsheathing the sword and the brave warriors attacking head on.

  10. حاتمُ الجود أحنفُ الحلم قيسُ الرأي

    عمرو والإقدام كسرى عدلا

    The ever generous Hatim, the wisest judge, judicious Qais,

    Courageous Amr, and just like Kisra in justice.

  11. فلك السهم من مدائحنا العلويَّ

    والقدح في المعالي المعلَّى

    For you is an arrow from our praises,

    And the wine cup raised to the most High.

  12. لاتحدث عن الكرام فمن وراءك

    دون الأنام فقد راءَ كلاً

    Do not talk about nobles, for behind you

    Among the people have clearly seen before.

  13. أيُّ شكٍّ في البدر من بعد

    ما أشرق في حلَّة الدجى وتجلّى

    What doubt is there about the full moon after

    It has shone in the dress of darkness and appeared?

  14. ولك الوفضةُ التي حملها سودُ

    المنايا التي تسمَّى نبلا

    And for you are the silver pieces carried by

    The black nights that are called arrows.

  15. أو فمعد القضاء مضمونها الـ

    ـبيض المواضي تزداد بالنَّقص صقلا

    As if destiny's guaranteed provisions are

    The white plains that gain more polish with decrease.

  16. كلُّ لدن المهزِّ يهدي لباغيك

    وباغٍ جهلاً حياة وقتلا

    Every near one gifted by God guides to your doors,

    And the ignorant come to you for life and death.

  17. مرهفٌ حدُّه تحزَّم في الملك

    حزاماً كما تجلّل جلاَّ

    A blade sharpened, its edge wrapped

    In kingship, just as the turban wraps the head.

  18. فهو في حالةِ أمرُّ من الموت

    وفي حالةٍ من العيش أحلى

    Thus he is in a state more bitter than death,

    And in a state sweeter than life.

  19. عسلٌ ريقهُ لمشتاره العافي فإن

    صال في عدّى حال صلاَّ

    Honey - its spittle for one enjoying good health, but if

    He meets someone hostile, his situation changes.

  20. فهوُ يعطي الألفين مالاً وجاهاً

    ويفيد الضدَّين عزّاً وذلاَّ

    He gives thousands money and status,

    And benefits both friend and foe - honor and disgrace!

  21. نطاقٌ وهو أخرسٌ يهبُ الـ

    ـمال جزيلاً ويمنحُ القولَ جزلا

    A silent pact - he grants abundant

    Wealth and gifts compelling words and phrases.

  22. توأم السيف في الكريهة لا يفر

    ق بين القولين صرماً ووصلا

    Twins of the sword in war - he does not distinguish

    Between words in jest and sincerity.

  23. هبَّ يغشى الليلَ النهارَ وذاك الـ

    ـليل أبهى من طلعة الصبح ظلاَّ

    Dawn covers night which makes that

    Night brighter than the dawn ever was!

  24. أيُّ شعبٍ كم أسهلت منه للـ

    ـملك جيوش كثرنَ خيلاً ورجلا

    What land whose armies you facilitated for the King

    With numerous horses and men?

  25. فهو يسخو بها صفوفاً إلى الأ

    عداء تتلى بها الصفوف وتبلى

    He is generous with them - battle line after battle line

    Against the enemy - the lines recited and tested.

  26. كم أثارت من قسطلٍ فيرى من

    فوق أطلابها تراباً ورملاً

    How much dust did it kick up so one can see

    Above its height dust and sand!

  27. فإذا الخطبُ كان طلاَّ فإ

    ن فاض وابلاً فاض وبلا

    If the matters were pressing, then copious

    Rains poured and flooded.

  28. يمطر العسجدَ المصفَّى فقد أصـ

    ـبح كلٌّ على غواديهِ كلاّ

    It rains refined honey so everything in

    Its valleys has become sweet.

  29. أمهُ من سلالة الزنّج والـ

    ـروم بنوها ترضيك أهلاً ونجلا

    Its mother is from African and Roman

    Lineage - her children satisfy you as relatives and progeny.

  30. فهي أختُ الليل البهيم فقد نقَّط

    ـها بالنجوم خيلاً ورجلا

    She is sister of the valiant night - it dotted

    Her with stars - horses and men.

  31. دمها درُّهُ فإن هو أودى

    ذات يوم فليس تجزع ثكلا

    Her blood is expensive - so if it

    Once destroys something, do not despair from the loss!

  32. فإذا فارقته لا عن هلاكٍ

    فاض للبين دمعهُ واستهلا

    If you lose it, not from destruction,

    But separation, its tears flow and lamentation begins.

  33. دائمٌ سقيه ومع ذاك يمهى

    غير شكٍّ قدّاً ويقصر شكلا

    Continually watered yet still parched, without

    Doubt straightens what is crooked.

  34. وحفاهُ في رأسهِ فإذا حيـ

    ـف كسوه يقطعة منهُ نعلا

    It houses bare heads - so if it weaved

    Garments cut from it shoes.

  35. يا أبا الفتح كم فتحتَ إلى أخ

    رك باباً لولاك أرتج طفلا

    Oh opener of conquests - how many doors have

    You opened while if not for you, an infant would stumble!

  36. أكثرَ الناسُ في بنائك هذا الـ

    ـجسرَ مدحاً وأنت أعلى محلاّض

    Most people in building this bridge have

    Praised you, while you remain most high.

  37. لستَ ممَّن يبغي به هذه الـ

    ـدنيا فقد حزتها فلم تبقَ بذلا

    You are not one who seeks through it this

    World - for you have judged it so nothing remains to be spent.

  38. والذي يرتجيهِ للجنَّة الخلق

    فقد نلتهُ بفعلك قبلا

    That which people wish for Paradise

    You have attained with your actions before.

  39. بل تشكَّت ممَّا تدلُّ إليك الأ

    رض ضعفاً فليس تسطيع حملا

    In fact, it has marveled from what the land

    Leads you out of weakness, unable to carry.

  40. أوهنت أيدها العفاةُ فقد ظا

    هرتَ منها إلى نداك السُّبلا

    Its helpless hands failed so you have appeared

    From it to your open doors and pathways.

  41. كفلتها يداك تعمر ما أنهج

    منها كما كفتها المحلا

    Your hands have guaranteed it - you build what you

    Planned from it just as your planned the destinations.

  42. أن تمادى ما بين بحرين فالأعلى

    إلينا أدنى وفي القدر أعلى

    If you travel between two seas - the highest

    To us is nearest while in fate most high.

  43. قد بلغت الأقصى منم المجد حتى

    لو بنيت السماء ما ازددت نبلا

    You reached the furthest limit of glory until

    If the sky itself was rebuilt, you would not gain more merit.

  44. إن مرءا ولاه مولاهُ لم يخـ

    ـتشِ في دولة المكارم عزلا

    If one's Lord appointed him, one won't fear

    In removing him in due time from higher dignitaries.

  45. وكذا فالنجوم تقصر عن نظ

    مي كذا يصحب الأجلُّ الأجلاَّ

    Thus, the stars fail to compare to

    My purposeful organising. Thus death meets death.

  46. شتَّ شمل اللُّهى فقلتُ لكي أجـ

    ـمع فضلاً ما بين مثلين شملا

    You have united God's creation so I said in order

    To combine virtue between two likes - union.

  47. أنت فقَّهتني فأحسنت قولا

    حين صرفتني فأحسنت فعلا

    You taught me so I excellently spoke

    When you guided me so I excellently acted.

  48. أنَّ ألفاظيَ التي يشهد الفضل لـ

    ـها أنَّها الكوامل فضلا

    That my words that attest to their merit

    Comprise all perfections and virtues.

  49. ومعانيّ لو يسير إليها الـ

    ـفهم يوماً بغير هادٍ لضلاَّ

    And meanings - if the mind journeys to one

    Day without a guide, it would certainly go astray.

  50. قد كفاني شكوى حسودي فعلٌ

    هو أنضى فؤاده بي هزلا

    Your envious people's complaints suffice me - an act

    That has brightened my heart much more than jest.

  51. أيُّ غلٍّ في قلبه ليَ لو يسقـ

    ـيه لا بل يجيدهِ بات غلاَّ

    What bitterness is in his heart for me if

    He quenches it? Rather, he worsens it overnight!

  52. ليس صدق الفعلين سرّاً وجهرا

    لك حلو القولين جداّ وهزلا

    Truth in public and private is no secret for you -

    Your serious and playful words are sweet.

  53. أنا لولاك كنت نضو ركابٍ

    وأخداتٍ تفلي الفلاة وتفلى

    Without you, I would be the companion

    Of feet and possessions that have wasted away in wilderness.

  54. وطني أنت لا دمشق وأهلي

    نعمةٌ منك أصبحت لي أهلا

    You are my home, not Damascus, and my family is

    A favor from you that has become family to me.

  55. كنت عوني بحيثُ لا يجد الإ

    لفُ أليفا ولا الخليل الخلاَّ

    You have been my supporter such that neither the intimate can find

    An intimate, nor the companion, a companion.

  56. وانتحاني صرفُ الزمان فلماً

    جاءني مقبلاً نداك تولَّى

    Turning of fate turned away from me, so when

    Your being turned to me, it turned toward me.

  57. فلهذا اعتقدتُ مدحك فرضاً

    ومديح الأنام بعدك نفلا

    Thus, I have believed praising you is an obligation,

    While praising other people after you - optional.

  58. ربَّما مدحةٌ عدت للأعادي

    طعنةً فيصلاً وقولاً فصلا

    Perhaps, a praise for enemies returns

    As a stab - a means and an end.

  59. فابقَ تبلي بأس الحوادث بأساً

    ثم لا نال من خلالك تبلا

    So remain - time tests the power of calamities with power,

    Then does not reach your perfections with a test.
