1. هاتيكَ دراهمُ وتلكَ الأربعُ

    ولّتْ ببهجتها الرّياح الأربعُ

    Those coins and this group of four,

    The four winds blew away in their joy.

  2. فإذا شكوتُ فما بدارٍ رحمةٌ

    وإذا دعوتُ فصامتٌ لا يسمع

    So if I complain, there is no mercy at home,

    And if I call, they are silent and do not hear.

  3. ما ودّعوا بل أودعوكَ صبابةً

    أودى بقلبكَ مودعٌ ومودّع

    They did not bid farewell. Rather they entrusted you with youthfulness

    A visitor ruined your heart, one who bids farewell and one who was bidden farewell.

  4. أسروا غداة فؤادك وانثنوا

    فثنى تجلّدك الخليطُ المزمع

    At dawn they captured your heart and bent it,

    So your composure was bent by the mixed group about to depart.

  5. غربتْ شموسهمُ عشيّةَ غرّبٍ

    وأخالها دون الطّويلع تطلع

    Their suns set in the evening of one who was a stranger,

    And I imagined them rising below Al-Tawilah.

  6. ما شأنُ شأنكَ لا تجود بمائهِ

    إنَّ الشؤونَ على الشؤون تضيّع

    What is the matter with your situation that you do not give generously with its water?

    Indeed situations over situations are lost.

  7. من ودِّ قلبك لو نزحتَ قليبهُ

    إنَّ القلوب تفيض منها الدمع

    If you were to drain the love from their hearts,

    Indeed, tears overflow from them.

  8. وأرى الهوى يذكي الهواءُ ضرامهُ

    فعلامَ قلبك بالجنائب مولع

    And I see passion kindling discord in the air,

    So why is your heart inclined towards pretty gazelles?

  9. حتّام تقلقُ والقلوبُ سواكنٌ

    وإلامَ تسهرك العيونُ الهجّع

    Why are you restless while hearts besides yours are tranquil?

    And why do sleeping eyes keep you awake?

  10. لثنى حسامَ الصبرِ وهو مثلّمٌ

    يومَ الوداع ملثّمٌ ومقنّع

    The sword of patience is folded while it is cracked.

    On the day of farewell, masked and veiled.

  11. من كل مبتسمٍ بكى عشّاقهُ

    والغيثُ آيتهُ البروقُ اللمّع

    Every smiler’s lovers wept for them

    And its sign is lightning flashes and sparkles.

  12. وأمامَ هاتيك الحمولِ ممنطقٌ

    باللّحظ فهو لوقعهِ يتوجّع

    And ahead of that caravan walks one who is girded

    Suffering from their gaze, it pains him.

  13. ذو مقلةٍ أبداً تسيءُ لحاظها

    فينا ويشفع وجههُ فيشفّع

    One with a glance that is always dazzling to me

    Causing me harm, and his face makes intercession.

  14. حاز الجمالَ فليس عنهُ لعاشقٍ

    مسلٍ وعزَّ فليس فيهِ مطمع

    He attained beauty so no admirer has

    A resting place or hope in him.

  15. بدرٌ متى يضعِ اللثامِ لتهتدي

    الأظعانُ فهو من الحياءِ مبرقع

    A full moon, when will he remove the veil so lost gazelles can be guided

    While he is too shy and modest to unveil?

  16. أبداً يصدُّ ولا يصدُّ جفونهُ

    ولحاظهُ عمّا يراها تصنع

    His eyelids are always rejecting but they do not reject

    What they see from her flirting.

  17. تتصاحبُ الأضدادُ في حركاتهِ

    ردفٌ يعاصيهِ وخصرٌ طيّعِ

    Opposites accompany each other in his movements

    A compliant hip and an obedient waist.

  18. فاكفف نزاعك في هواه فإنَّ لي

    قلباً يحنُّ إلى هواه وينزع

    So restrain your dispute regarding his love for I have

    A heart that yearns for his love and pulls away.

  19. أأكون ذا شجنٍ بهِ ويصدُّني

    عذلٌ ويدعوني الخليُّ فاتبع

    Shall I have anxiety because of him and yet he rejects me,

    And a flirt calls me over so I follow?

  20. خفتُ الرّدى إن خفتُ نبأةَ راعبٍ

    وجنابُ تاج الدين منها المفزع

    I feared evil if I feared the news of a fearful watcher

    And the flank of the crown of religion is my refuge from it.

  21. نصبُ المكارم بات يخفضُ جاهلاً

    جزماً وأربابَ الفضائلِ يرفع

    The course of virtues has now ignorantly become low

    Lowering resolve and raising the people of merit.

  22. من لاسمهِ ولفعله لم تعدهُ

    حرفٌ تخبُّ بقاصديه وتوضع

    No letter foretells his name or his action

    Hiding my intentions and placing them.

  23. مقصورةٌ مدحي عليهِ وإنّها

    ممدودةُ الآمال فيما يصنع

    My praise poem composed for him is a preserve

    With hopes outstretched in what he will accomplish.

  24. حبرٌ يروعُ يراعهُ أعداءه

    فعدوّهِ قلقُ الوسادِ مروَّع

    An sea that we collected its pearls from its abyss

    And it returns to him without rivals.

  25. في كلّ حرفٍ من سطور كتابهِ

    مثلٌُ شرودٌ أو خطيبٌ مصقع

    Al-Amyani folded his words, Yemenite,

    Embroidered and embellished with miracles.

  26. متطفّلٌ في العلم لا متمنّعٌ

    متواضعٌ في الله لا يترفّع

    He revived by it the country and its people for Allah gives

    To whom He wills and deprives whom He wills.

  27. نهدي إليه مديحنا مع علمنا

    أنَّ المدائح في سواه تضيّع

    When the clouds are stingy with their water, he storms

    How many times from Dhaymah to another storm!

  28. بحرٌ لقطنا درَّه من لجّهِ

    وإليهِ من دون البريّة يرجع

    Damascus has been adorned and its breeze is scented

    Its landmarks blossomed and dwellings delighted.

  29. لثنى أبو اليمن المقالَ يمانياً

    بالمعجزات موشّحٌ وموشّع

    It has become the most noble in the world

    And how noble when it was desolate wilderness!

  30. أحيا بهِ الله البلادَ وأهلها

    واللهُ يعطي من يشاءُ ويمنع

    So he has over what is not found his equal

    In every art, an undeniable witness.

  31. يهمي متى ضنَّ السّحاب بمائهِ

    كم بين دائمةٍ وأخرى تقلع

    Oh xlsx for me when the protector was inaccessible by name!

    Skilled in words, he composes and innovates wonderfully.

  32. حليتْ دمشقُ ورقَّ نسيمها

    وزكتْ منابتها ولذَّ المشرع

    Oh you who pierced the Arabs who have become senile!

    Oh you who crammed their club that was filled to capacity!

  33. وغدتْ بأشرفِ عالمٍ في عالمٍ

    ولكم غدت وهي الفلاةُ البلقعِ

    Whoever claims to parallel your superiority, let him die!

    Or live while his heart is torn to shreds!

  34. فلهُ على أنْ ليس يوجدُ مثلهُ

    في كلّ فنٍّ شاهدٌ لا يدفعُ

    You rebuilt what the people had demolished of glories

    And preserved what they had lost of its rulings.

  35. يا لوذعيّاً لاذَ عيٌّ باسمهِ

    أسواك يبرع في المقال ويبدع

    You were sleepless seeking sleep at nights

    When the stars are sleeping.

  36. يا حجة العرب الذين تخرّموا

    يا فهمها إمّا يغصُّ المجمع

    You proved firm to souls while they shook

    And the pillar for souls does not shake.

  37. من رام تشبيهاً بفضلكَ فليمتْ

    أو فليعشْ وفؤادهُ يتقطّع

    How often you walked the desert while it growled frightfully!

    And you clove the dress of nobility while it sparkled!

  38. شيّدتَ ما هدمَ الأنام من العُلى

    وحفظتَ من أحكامها ما ضيّعوا

    Until you became singular and everyone says,

    “If that brilliant radiant one is named!”

  39. وسهرتَ في طلب المنامِ ليالياً

    فيها نجومُ الليل ممّن يهجع

    Your enemies say in fear,

    Like the fear when banners are unfurled.

  40. وثبتَّ للأرواح وهي زعازعٌ

    والطّودُ للأرواح لا يتزعزع

    So when you speak, every fierce lion of speech

    Is a dreaded hearing if it could hear.

  41. ولكم خطوتَ البيدَ وهيَ تنائفٌّ

    وشققتَ ثوب الآل وهو ملمّع

    The rare poem is constantly raiding

    The lands, penetrating countries and moving on.

  42. حتى انفردتَ وكلُّ فردٍ قائلٌ

    إنْ تُسمَ ذاك الألمعيُّ الأروع

    A ruler whose hearing makes kings your followers

    While over others, their permission is withheld.

  43. خوف الأعادي قائلاً

    كالخوف حيثُ السّمهريّة شرّع

    They are always veiled but the veils

    Were never lifted from them with good news.

  44. فمتى نطقتَ فكلُّ ليثِ مقالةٍ

    مرهوبةٍ سمعٌ إذا ما يسمع

    You mounted the horse of high rank

    Which no one besides you hoped to ride.

  45. ولكَ الشّوارد لا تزال مغيرةً

    في الناس تخترقُ البلاد وتقطع

    The hand of praise bejeweled you with a pearl

    With which not every crown is adorned.

  46. حكمٌ لأسماع الملوك موالكٌ

    وعلى سواها إذنها متمنّع

    Your highness made every pillar for Kindah

    Upon which al-Hadathan does not shake.

  47. أبداً تُحجّب ثمَّ لم يبرحْ لها

    منهم حجابٌ بالبشاةِ يرفع

    The sun of knowledge seemed to have risen for them

    In reality, an era of illumination rose for you!

  48. لقد امتطيتَ من المعالي صهوةً

    ما كان غيرك في مطاها يطمع

    If Aad returned, his worth would still fall below yours

    And he would be the first of your followers!

  49. ولرصّعتكَ يدُ الثّناء بدرّةٍ

    ما كلُّ تاجٍ بالثناءِ يُرصّع

    You are time, besides you there is no one sought

    By seekers, and besides you there is no shelter!

  50. أضحى لكندةَ من علائك أيُّما

    ركنٍ على الحدثان لا يتضعضع

    People are either an intelligent listener

    Or else an intelligent deaf person!

  51. ردّت لهم شمسُ العلوم كأنما

    زمنٌ سما لكَ في الحقيقةِ يوشع

    I devoted my allegiance submissively to the one praised

    Besides you, for the star is lower than you!

  52. لو عادَ عادٌ كان دونك قدره

    ولكانَ أوّلَ تابعٍ لك تُبَّع

    None besides you is a pasture for poetry

    No! Nor is the basin of eloquence a meadow!

  53. أنت الزمانُ فما سواك بمقصدٍ

    للقاصدينَ وليس دونك مقنع

    The science of sciences by your palm’s grasp

    Guides us to you and brings us together!

  54. والناسُ إمّا سامع ما عندهُ

    عقلٌ وغمّا عاقلٌ لا يسمع

    If horizons constrict around the needy

    Then for him is a way to your bestowal made smooth!

  55. آليتُ ألفي خاضعاً لممدّحٍ

    إلاك إنَّ النّجم دونكَ يخضع

    And if the wind of discord blows fiercely

    Take refuge in him, for mountains are a refuge from winds!

  56. ما عندَ غيرك للقوافي مرتعٌ

    كلاَّ ولا حوضُ الفصاحةِ مترع

  57. علمُ العلوم بكفِّ كفّك عاديَ

    الأيّام يرشدنا إليك ويجمع

  58. إن ضاقت الآفاق عن ذي فاقةٍ

    فلهُ سبيلٌ من نوالك مهيع

  59. وإذا انبرتْ ريحُ الخلاف فلذْ بهِ

    إن الجبال من الرياح المفزع
