1. باحت بنجد وهوى غزلانها

    هواتف الأيك على أفنانها

    She yearned for Najd and its gazelles that she loved

    Her cell phones are ringing for her friends

  2. حنت إلى البان فناحت طرباً

    وإنما حنت إلى أوطانها

    She longed for the wet nurse so she sang in rapture

    Yet she longed for her home

  3. أهوى القدود الهيف تحميها القنا

    ولوعها بالهيف من أغصانها

    I love the slender branched acacia protected by spear-wood

    Her passion for slender is from its branches

  4. يعرب دمعي كاتباً وخاطباً

    عن لحن ما تعجم في ألحانها

    My tears speak, writing and addressing

    The inarticulate melody in its tones

  5. إن هوى لبنى وما بي من قلى

    لبانة أعجز عن كتمانها

    My love for the Bani is intrinsic and has no cure

    It is an ardent love I cannot conceal

  6. جل هواهاً عن فؤاد كاتم

    فكل شأن بائح بشأنها

    Exalted is her love from the heart of one who hides

    For every obvious affair exposes its counterpart affair

  7. كأنما قلوبنا صحائف

    مطوية تقرأ من عنوانها

    It is as if our hearts are scrolls

    Folded, read from their titles

  8. فهل فتى مبرأ من ريبة

    يسأل عن قلبي في أظعانها

    Can a lad then be safe from suspicion

    If he asks about my heart during its affliction?

  9. ينشده بين البدور في الدجى

    على غصون البان في كثبانها

    He recites it to me in the ruins at night

    On the branches of spear-wood in its dunes

  10. هيفاء وطفاء أسألت أدمعي

    فيا لأجفاني من أجفانها

    Gentle, bright, I asked my tears

    Oh my eyelids, like her eyelids

  11. وجنتها لكل نفس جنة

    لو أنها تطمع في رضوانها

    Her gardens are a paradise for every soul

    If it aspires to be in its pleasure

  12. قلبي جنيف لبا مجوسي الهوى

    فما له يصبو إلى نيرانها

    My heart is Magian, inspired by love

    So why does it incline toward its fires?

  13. يا دمية الحي التي طلت دمي

    بصارم القسوة من هجرانها

    O doll of the quarter that shed my blood

    With the sharpness of abandonment

  14. إن الديار كالجسوم أصبحت

    موحشة الأرجاء من سكانها

    The abodes have become, like corpses

    Devoid of dwellers, dreary in their expanses

  15. كأنما العشاق جاهلية

    عاكفة فيها على أوثانها

    It is as if the lovers are pre-Islamic

    Worshipping idols in it

  16. أرخصت من مدامعي لآلنا

    لو جمدت غاليت في أثمانها

    I shed my tears wastefully for Ālā

    If they solidified, they would be priceless

  17. واطربا إلى دمشق وإلى

    جيرونها شوقاً إلى جيرانها

    I long for Damascus and for

    Jeroun its neighbor, longing for its neighbors

  18. والشرفين ومصلى وذرى

    ربوتها والوهد من ميدانها

    And Ashrafiyyin and Masalla and Dhari

    I loved them and Al-Wahd from its race track

  19. والواديين صدحت أطيارها

    بما يروق السمع من أوزانها

    And the two valleys, their birds trilled

    With what pleases the hearing of their songs

  20. دار هي الجنة خاب عاذل

    في حورها العين وفي ولدانها

    The abode is paradise, the critic despaired

    Of its lovely maidens and boys

  21. من كل هيفاء ثنت رداءها

    على قضيب البان من غيرانها

    The slender acacia bent its mantle

    On the spear-wood without any thorns

  22. والجلنار في الخدود فاضح

    صدورها بالينع من رمانها

    The slash of light on the cheek revealed

    Its breasts with softness of its pomegranate

  23. كأنما جمانها من ثغرها

    أو ثغرها نظم من جمانها

    As if its dimples are stringed pearls

    Or its pearls composed from its dimples

  24. وفاتك المقلة ساج طرفه

    لم يعد إنساناً سطى إنسانها

    That slender and languorous enchantment

    Who encountered it is no more human

  25. أكحلها ساحرها أحورها

    قاتلها فاترها فتانها

    Her kohl is bewitching, her coyness deadly

    Her reversal captivating, her charm deadly

  26. كأنما مياهها قواضب

    جردها الصيقل من أجفانها

    Her waters are like cups

    Burnished by polishing from their rims

  27. ودوحها عرائس تزف من

    مصبغات الوشي في ألوانها

    Her milking pen are brides escorted

    In the dyes of tattoos in their colors

  28. بكى الغمام فشدا قمريها

    فرقصت زهواً قدود بانها

    The cloud wept so it wore its silvery rim

    So it frolicked proudly erecting its spear-wood

  29. من كان لدن مائس في نوره

    كالصعدة السمراء في سنانها

    Whoever at any time despaired of its light

    Was like the swarthy sulfur in its teeth

  30. مسرح إخواني ونفسي حرة

    مذ خلقت تصبو إلى إخوانها

    It was a theater for my brothers and I

    My soul was free since it was created longing for its brothers

  31. حيل الحيا تلك الربوع وسقى

    مهذب الدين فتى فتيانها

    The schemes of settled life in this land and the provision

    Of refined religion to its youth

  32. الشامخ العلياء حط رحله

    من غاية المجد على كيوانها

    It towered high its banners

    From the epitome of glory over its expanse

  33. والناسخ المخل بسحب خلقت

    أناملاً تهمي على قطانها

    The creator made wondrous with the fingers

    That pored over its writing tablet

  34. سافحها سارحها فهاقها

    دفاقها هاطلها هتانها

    Its plains, its cattle-pen, its precipice

    Its flowing sands, its temptation, its flirtation

  35. زينت بها الدنيا وكانت عاطلاً

    فجيدها يختال في عقيانها

    Adorned by it, the world was deserted

    So its beautiful valley swaggered in its steeps

  36. ذو فطنة الطف من نسيمها

    وحبوة أرجح من ثهلانها

    Agile of mind from its breeze

    More blissful than its groves

  37. فاق الورى فصاحة تصحبها

    بلاغة ناهيك عن إحسانها

    It surpassed mankind in eloquence accompanied

    By an unmatched benevolence

  38. تزل أقدام الورى عن شأوها

    وترقص الأفهام من بيانها

    The feet of mankind slip in aspiring to its glory

    And the minds dance from its rhetoric

  39. فلا تقس قساً إلى إعجازها

    واسحب يد العفو على سحبانها

    So do not judge with certainty about its inimitability

    And withdraw the hand of pardon over its plains

  40. يا ابن نظيف حبذا صحيفة

    قيدت لها نفسي إلى إذعانها

    O son of merit, excellent are the pages

    Where my soul submitted to it

  41. مدت لها يمينها ودخلت

    أفكارها الفردوس من جنانها

    It extended its right hand so

    Its ideas entered paradise from its gardens

  42. وآمنت فضلها ولم يكن

    ينفعها شيء سوى إيمانها

    I believed in its superiority and nothing

    Benefited it but its faith

  43. فالألفات كالقدود مسن في

    مثل الخدود لحن في خيلانها

    Relationships are like the slender acacia

    Growing in cheeks, melody in its singing

  44. كل شرود سائر وسائغ

    مرعى ولكن أين من سعدانها

    Every tourism enjoyable and lawful

    Though pasture, but where is its Sa‘dān?

  45. فلو حوت أيدي الملوك لفظها

    ما رصعت منه سوى تيجانها

    If the hands of kings contained its words

    Only their crowns would be studded with it

  46. فهي سويداوات كل معجز

    ما أمكنت الأيدي طعانها

    It is the Suiydāwāt surpassing every miracle

    That hands were unable to pierce

  47. بكل ماض كالقناة نفسه

    ينوب في الأعداء عن خرصانها

    In every past like the canal itself

    Taking vengeance on enemies like its horsemen

  48. صقيلة حيث السجاب صدأ

    وكلف في وجنتي زمانها

    Burnished where rust tarnished

    And mixed on my cheek from its time

  49. وصفحات البيض لاحت أثرها

    ما لاحت الانقاس من ألوانها

    The tablets of white eggs gleamed

    As its pure complexion gleamed from its colors

  50. كأنما سطورها جحافل

    لا تطمع الأحداث في خذلانها

    As if its lines are regiments

    That misfortunes cannot hope to betray

  51. ودولة كفاك صيتاً وعلى

    ما شيدت كفاك من سلطانها

    Your power’s realm in repute and over

    What your power built of an authority

  52. ملكك في الحرب أبو نجدتها

    وأنت في السلم أخو ديوانها

    Your rule in war, the helper of its victory

    And you in peace, brother of its council

  53. فهو المجلي والملوك خلفه

    مثل جياد الخيل في رهانها

    So it is the glorious one and the sovereigns behind it

    Like steeds of horses in its race

  54. قصر عن ثباته قيصرها

    وعدله أنسى أنوشروانها

    Caesar fell short of its firmness

    And its justice made Anūshirwān forgetful

  55. أقسمت ما وبلهم كطلة

    أين بحار الأرض من خلجانها

    I swear what engulfed them like a washbowl

    Where are the oceans of the world from its waves?

  56. الواهب الألف حداها عذره

    عرامساً تمرح في ارسانها

    The Giver lavished thousands in its excuse

    As camels frolicking in its meadow

  57. والسابقات القب كل شطبة

    مجفرة تمزع في عنانها

    The excellent horses whose girths can hardly contain them

    Saddled, charging with the bridle-strap

  58. لو وطئت صم الحصى حوافياً

    أنبعن عذب الماء من صفوانها

    If hard rocky ground were trodden by its hoof

    Sweet water would spring from its whirling

  59. والقاتل الأموال ما أكياسها

    يوم الوفادات سوى أكفانها

    The money-killer, what are its purses

    During pilgrimage season but its shrouds?

  60. بدر دجى راياته سحائب

    بروقها الهندي في أحضانها

    The full moon of its banners are clouds

    Its lightning Indian in its grasp

  61. لو الجبال وزنت بحلمه

    شالت جبال الأرض في ميزانها

    If its patience were weighed against mountains

    It would lift the mountains of earth in its scales

  62. أو لأسود بليت ببأسه

    أخلت له الأوطان من خفانها

    Or the lions smeared by its might

    Would empty the countries of its sheep

  63. كأنما الأطراس حومات وغى

    يراعك المشهور من فرسانها

    It is as if the bells around it are protective damsels

    The famous knight from its horsemen alarms you

  64. يجول فكراً نافذاً تحمله

    أنامل تجول في ميدانها

    Circling thoughts carrying it

    Fingers circling in its range

  65. فكل معنى سار في الدنيا إلى

    حماتها ينسب أو بيسانها

    Every meaning wandering the world to

    Its protector attributes its origin or it of Bisān

  66. تالله ما نظمي كفاء نثرها

    ولا لآلي إذا مرجانها

    By God my poem does not equal its prose

    Nor does anything of mine if it is coral

  67. فلا تناقشه العتاب إنه

    ما كلفت نفس سوى إمكانها

    So do not condemn it with reproach, it only

    Tasked itself within its capacity

  68. وأبسط له العذر وخذ طائية

    أنسابها تنمي إلى عدنانها

    And accept its excuse openly and take

    Its genealogy that builds to ‘Adnān

  69. بكر القوافي ما تباشر بشراً

    كغيرها من إنسها وجانها

    The basis of rhymes did not engage with mortal

    Like others of its kind of human or jinn

  70. جاءت على طي الفلا ونشرها

    ونشرها أنم من حوذانها

    It came walking proudly, arrogantly

    And its arrogance more comely than its cheek

  71. تزور من عليها محمداً

    أحسن ما شاء إلى حسانها

    Visiting the one above it, Muḥammad

    The best of what he desired for its delight

  72. كأنما لبني لقيس أهديت

    أو جليت مي على غيلانها

    As if I gifted offspring of Labīd

    Or smoothed the water over its pebbles
