1. أنَّةُ الحبِّ زفرةٌ وعويلُ

    هزلَ الصب ُ حين جدَّ الرحيلُ

    The love's suffering is wailing and lament

    The morning mocks when parting time comes near

  2. اقفرتْ ساحة المصلّى من الحـ

    ـي وسارت عن العذيب الخمولُ

    The mosque yard is devoid of my people and kin

    And languor has left the place of tryst and cheer

  3. هذه لوعة الوداع وما يطفأ إلـ

    ـلا بالدمع فيها الغليلُ

    This is the agony of farewell; and it calms down only

    With tears that wash away the swelling fear

  4. غير بدعٍ أن يعجب الناس مني

    أنا حيً وبالفراق قتيلُ

    It is no wonder people find me strange

    I live, yet by parting I am struck and smear

  5. أنكرت منّي النحولَ ابنة القو

    مِ وقدماً زان السيوفَ النحولُ

    The slender daughter of my tribe denied

    My emaciation while the swords of foes appear

  6. ورأت أدمعي فريعت وقالت

    تلك نفسٌ من الجفون تسيلُ

    She saw my tears and turned away saying

    “His soul through his eyelids does flow and tear”

  7. ضاع قلبي وأنحلَّ الشوق جسمي

    أنا ما قيل فارغٌ مشغولُ

    My heart is lost and longing shreds my body

    I am called vacant though I am suffering sheer

  8. فالمجاني مثلُ القلوب جدوبٌ

    والمغاني مثل الجسوم طاولُ

    So the lovers are free, and the hearts are close-fisted,

    And the lovesick are generous, their bodies austere

  9. كتبت في البرى ذوائبُ ليلى

    ما محاه التعفير والتقبيلُ

    I wrote on the dunes the tresses of Layla

    That wiping and kissing could not wipe or clear

  10. وأطالت ليلي وكان قصيراً

    كلُّ ليلٍ مع الغرام يطولُ

    My Layla did tarry and the night was short

    For every night with passion is lingering and drear

  11. رقَّ لي العاذلون فيها وأدهى الـ

    ـحبَّ ما رقَّ منه العذولُ

    My lovers fretted for her and love's pain

    Was more than what the abstinent could bear

  12. وبروحي أغنّ يهوى مع البخـ

    ـل له الله كيف يهوى البخيلُ

    With my soul I sing the love of the miser

    May God bless him, how the miser can love sincere!

  13. ممرض المقلتين وهو صحيح

    ساكن القلب والوشاح يجولُ

    He makes my eyelids sick, his heart is healthy

    He occupies my heart while the scarf does wear

  14. دقَّ خصراً وجلَّ للحسن ردفاً

    فسباني الحسن الدقيق الجليلُ

    His waist is slender, his thighs a marvel

    So the slender waist and noble thighs I fear

  15. إن يكن جاهلاً بعطفيه لم يفـ

    ـهم عن نفحة الصَّبا ما يقولُ

    If he's ignorant of my passion, he cannot understand

    What the morning breeze says with its breath and cheer

  16. كلَّما قلت عادني لبي العا

    زبُ أو أقصر الفؤاد الجهولُ

    Whenever I say “come back to me, beloved”

    He comes to me or my ignorant heart does veer

  17. حدثتني عن القدود شمالٌ

    وحكت لي عن الثغور شمولُ

    The north wind told me of migrating birds

    And the south wind narrated the winters near

  18. فنعيمي وشقوتي قدُّه العـ

    ـسال ليناً وريقه المعسولُ

    So my bliss and misery, its origin’s the brook

    With soft water and dripping lips so clear

  19. ويميناً لم يعظم البرحُ لو كا

    ن إلى السبيل منه سبيلُ

    By God, if there was through it a way

    The distance would not be reckoned too severe

  20. لا تلمني على الذُّهول فما

    آفة صبٍّ إلاَّ الأسى والذُّهولُ

    Don’t blame me for confusion for a young man’s folly

    Is nothing but sorrow and confusion, I fear

  21. فارقتنا القلوبُ أمسِ مع الغيد

    وسارت مع الوزير العقولُ

    Yesterday our hearts left us with the beautiful one

    And our minds marched away with the minister and peer
