1. عَداكَ وجدي فعدِّ عن عَذًلي

    من قبلُ كان السلوُّ من قِبَلي

    Beyond you my bliss was illusory; so cease to blame me,

    Though formerly the fault was mine.

  2. لولا امتثالي أمرَ العيونِ لَما

    حُكّمِ لحظُ الآجال في أَجلي

    Had I not obeyed the command of the eyes,

    The appointed hour would not have judged my fate.

  3. من لمشوقٍ حيِ الصبابةِ والأَش

    جانِ مَيتِ الرجاءِ والأَمل

    The charms of enchanting youth and the self-display of adolescence

    Are like the hopes and expectations of the dead.

  4. معُزًى بثاني القناة في اللَّون والل

    لين وثاني القضيب ذا خجَل

    The figure of the slender, soft and bashful youth

    Equals in its seductiveness the figure of the rod that is bent double.

  5. لا تُنكرنْ لوعتي بمقلته النَّش

    وى وأعطاف قدّهِ الثَّمل

    Do not deny that his glances have captivated my heart,

    His flanks that cling together and his heavy thighs.

  6. قلبي شُجاع الهوى فشيمتهُ

    حبُّ مواضي السيوف والأَسل

    My heart is courageous in love; its nature

    Is to love the valleys of swords and level spaces.

  7. يخفُّ نحو الدّمِاءِ يحملُها

    مُثقَل ذيلِ الوشاح بالسكل

    It yearns for bloodshed; heavily laden does it bear

    The hem of the garment, knotted with anklets.

  8. أُحبّهُ وهو باخلٌ ومن ال

    عناءِ حبُّ اللَّيان والبخَل

    I love him, indifferent and slow though he be to my passion,

    For 'tis the nature of love to love the niggardly and the slow.

  9. يَخفى ليَ الموتُ في خلائقهِ

    والسمُّ يخفي في لذَّةِ العمَل

    Death in its attributes is hidden from me,

    And poison lies unseen in what gives joy.

  10. اقبل يسعى والليلُ مُنسدِلٌ

    كالشَّمس في حُلَّةٍ من الطَّفَل

    He comes hastening by night, clad in a robe of darkness,

    Like the sun robed in clouds like infants' swaddling-bands.

  11. يهتفُ بي والبكاءُ يَشغلني

    عمَّا توقعتهُ من القُبَل

    He cries aloud to me while I weep, engrossed

    With expectations from his kisses.

  12. يمدُّ كفّي الهوى إلى ضمّ

    عطفَيه فلا تهتدي من الخَبَل

    Passion stretches out my hands to the folds of his sides;

    But bewildered, they cannot find the way to wander.

  13. لولا ذهولي نقعت من ريق

    ه بَرْحَ غليلي بمائِهِ الغَلَل

    Had I not been distraught I would have sipped until my thirst was slaked

    From his spittle the drafts that loose the knot of anguish.

  14. يُخيفني كلّ مقلةٍ ضمَّها ال

    حيَّ وما آقتي سوى المُقَل

    Every cheek pressed to his in the night alarms me, save my own,

    And naught have I beyond pressing cheek to cheek!

  15. مافي فؤادي مكان حادثةٍ

    يحلُهُ طارقٌ من الوَجل

    No stranger enters the temple of my heart to take its place;

    It is filled by my lord and all apart from him seem vile.

  16. أغناهم قدَّك المهفهَفُ عن

    هّزِ قدود العواسل الذُّبُل

    His neck have rendered other slim ones needless for amorous embraces,

    And makes the neighing arrows redundant and obsolete.

  17. طُلَّ دمي والرِماحُ ما اعتُقلت

    مشرعةً والسيوفُ في الخِلل

    My blood flowed freely while spears were held back from the fray,

    And swords were still sheathed and sneaking in their cases.

  18. ولى اصطباري والوجد مقتبلٌ

    وضاق ذرعَي بالأَعين النُّجل

    Patience deserted me while passion made ready (for the sport);

    My means failed me and eyes of murky hue were analytic.

  19. أبكي إلى ضاحكٍ وأصبو إلى

    سالٍ واشكوا الهوى إلى مَذِل

    I weep to him who laughs, act crazy to a reasonable man, complain of love

    To one indifferent to it and seek aid of the helpless.

  20. وصاحبٍ كالشَهِاب تَوأَمهُ

    عزميَ لا جازعٍ ولا وَكل

    But my companion is like a shooting star to whose resolution

    My own aspires, knowing nor turning tail nor fleeing the stress of harm.

  21. مقطبٌ حدُّهُ للأحزَنٍ

    مبتسمٌ صَفحهُ لِلا جذَل

    He lowers his eyes for grief and smiles at him who shows no feebleness;

    He brought me low, but he surpassed me in courtesy shown to the noble.

  22. أوطأني مِثَلهُ وجاوز بي

    بين نيوب المخارم العُصلُ

    His fangs bit deep into the boss while from ugly words

    And uncomely deeds his mouth was kept as free as his sword from rust.

  23. يا ناقُ وخداً إلى دمشق فما

    يُنال فيها النوالُ بالحيل

    How many a year has he suppressed privily while restraining his hands publicly from foul work!

    How many a cleavage has he repaired!

  24. كم شمْتُ في غيرها ندى رجلٍ

    وقفتُ من شخصهِ على طلل

    Royal authority is forbidden territory to me, a sanctuary

    Consecrated- no wayfarer may tread its soil!

  25. أي يدٍ أن بلغتهُا أَمَماً

    عندي لأيدي المطيّ والإِبل

    His prudence fortified him. Well fortified

    Was he then against the glance of deadly eyes with antimony!

  26. لا قرعت بعدها الآكام ولا

    ريعت بشدّ النسوع الجُدُل

    Now meeting the foe headlong, now using gentleness and procrastination,

    Descendant in the male line of the Pavilions of Heaven and the mighty Kings of Nafil.

  27. شابت نواصي الظلام من خي

    فة الصبح وللبرق هزة البطل

    More generous than a rain-shower, more penetrating than an arrow,

    More firmly rooted in minds than mountains.

  28. تخطَف لمعاً وشأنُ أنمله

    صبغُ رؤوس الأَطواد القلل

    Succor of the desolate places, rain-clouds of meadows and sand,

    Wealth despising the channels cut to bring water from the hills.

  29. أَمي صغيَّ الدين الأبي أخا المج

    د أبا الفتح نصراً بن علي

    When the sword is drawn he joys in the struggle as lovers

    Joy in talk of love and amatory verse.

  30. في حيثُ تُجلى أوانس المج

    دِ والسؤدد بين الحليّ والحلل

    He has raised the Banner of Greatness and strengthened its Guy-ropes

    Over the abject foe with snub nose and wind-beaten hair.

  31. يلقى حياض السماح مترعةً

    والجوادَ غضَّ السَّعدان والنَّفَل

    He preserved its reputation and saved it from the clutch of crookedness and instability,

    While men compare him to the clouds, and no flashing lightning can equal him

  32. لاح الهدى فانتحي محجتهُ

    والصبحُ يبدي خوافيَ السبُل

    Save the flashing blades. He feeds it like the well-guided Camel,

    Hurling at high-placed objects, swerving neither to right nor to left.

  33. فأنتِ من وجههِ وعارضه

    في ضوء شمسٍ بادٍ وفي ظُلَل

    He performs feats before which its achievements pale,

    So bounteous he in gifts and bounty.

  34. أنملهُ بالنوال حافلةٌ

    تُخجلُ صوبَ السحائبِ الُهطل

    When he recites poetry, he that hears him takes delight like lovers

    Hearkening to cooings of love and graces of seduction.

  35. صبٌ إلى الجود عقَّ عاذلهُ

    والصبُّ لا يرعوي عن العذل

    Safe with him from the tricks of Time, greeted here with peace undying

    Till the appointed Day! How many gifts doubly bestowed,

  36. لا يتجافى عن السؤال ولا

    تدعوهُ أخلاقهُ إلى الملل

    Hope exceeded by gifts showered on me oer hill and plain!

    Fair favours surpassing camphor itself and fresh bay leaves!

  37. من مال عنهُ فانَّ لي أملاً

    ليس على غيره بمتكل

  38. محتفلٌ بالخطوب دوني فقد

    أصبحت بالخطب غير محتفل

  39. أمنت في ظله الليالي فلا

    ارهب من صرفها سوى الأجل

  40. أباح شعري حمى مواهبه

    وكف كف الأعداء والعلل

  41. فسار أسنى في الارض من حاجب ال

    شمس وأعلى في القدر من زحل

  42. وكم حباني غراء ليس لها

    مثلٌ وكم حكمت فيه من مثل

  43. يحسن فيه قولاً فيحسن إذ

    تأتيه فضلاً في القول و العمل

  44. وربما زل مادحوه ولا

    تنسب أفعاله إلى الزلل

  45. بنا افتقارٌ فنحن نسأله

    ولو سكتنا أغنى ولم يسل

  46. لقد وجدت الزمان معتدلاً

    وكان لولاه غير معتدل

  47. ميزان حظي حالٍ بزهرته

    وشمس حالي في نقطة الحمل

  48. لا شللٌ يا يد الزمان لقد

    جدت بواقي الأيدي من الشلل

  49. عد الندى عدة الممالك منّاع

    حمى المجد عمدة الدول

  50. سيفٌ يفل الخطوب ضرباً ولا

    يعرف شين الكلام والفلل

  51. كم سنة فضلاً كم سل عزمته

    دون المعالي كم سد من خلل

  52. فالملك منه في ساحتي حرمٍ

    حل فما ركبه بمرتحل

  53. حصنه حزمه فحسنه

    تحسين نجل العيون بالكحل

  54. طوراً يلاقي الأعداء ذا عجل

    وتارةً بالأناة والمهل

  55. ابن بدور السماء والسح

    ب الغر الغوادي والسادة النبل

  56. أجود من ديمةٍ وأنفذ من

    سهمٍ وأرسى في الروع من جبل

  57. غوث الأيامي غيث الأوام إذا

    أسيل أغنى عن صيب السبل

  58. يلذ بالدح حين يسمعه

    تلذذ العاشقين بالغزل

  59. شاد المعالي وشد وطأتها

    فوق ذليلٍ أشم ذي بلل

  60. ثقَّف مياَّدها وأطلقَهُ

    من قبضة الاعوجاج والميَل

  61. يقيسُهُ الخَلقُ بالغمام فما

    يحمرُّ برقٌ إلا من الخطَل

  62. يراعهُ كالقناةِ معتدلٌ

    يرمي العوالي بالزَّيغ والخطَل

  63. يفعل أفعالها وتعجز عن

    أفعالهِ في العطاءِ والنّحَل

  64. ماض إذا علَّهُ وأَنهلَهُ

    أَغناهُ عن علّهِنَّ والنَّهَل

  65. فيه المنايا مع الأَمان من ال

    دهر فسالمهُ ثمَّ لا تُبَل

  66. كم لك من منَّةٍ مضاعفةٍ

    تعفو رجائي في السهلِ والجبل

  67. بيضاء رودٍ تفوق في الحس

    ن والنعمة بيض الخدور والكلل

  68. نمت وهبت الي ساهرةً

    وزُلتُ عن قصدها ولم تَز

  69. حسبك فاكفف علي أوفِك

    مع حذقي حقَّ السوابق الأُوَل

  70. ايُّ جواد فكري وايّ مدى

    يفوت طرفي والطِرفَ في الطّوَل

  71. فأطلقهُ بالاقتصاد أولا فلا

    لوم عليهِ في العجز والفشَل

  72. ما لي يدٌ فُتَّني بكل يدٍ

    تندى بها في الشؤبوب متَّصل

  73. وهذه السُبَّقُ النجائب فار

    بطها ولا تحفلنَّ بالهمَل

  74. وقُلْ لمن رامها بمنقصةٍ

    حُكْ مثلها أو فجلّ واعتزل
